Chapter 3: Magic and Flame
The Academy was spacious and large. It almost resembled a mansion of some kind.
The Daughters of House Havenweaver walked into a classroom. The heirs and heiresses of Houses Ravenkeep, Lockfield and Wolfglade were there.
"Look out, guys," Hagwin said with a smirk, "half breed entered the room."
"Leave her be, Hagwin," Zestari huffed. "What? I'm only speaking the truth," Hagwin replied with a chuckle, "that human has magic and she hurt an elf with it. What's next?"
Pyria frowned before she smiled slightly, "y'know, if you're in love with me, Hagwin, you can just say so."
"Wha-!" Hagwin yelped as a few other teens snickered.
"As if, you freak! I doubt anyone would spend time, being in love with you!" Hagwin snapped. Pyria gave the boy a blank look.
"The same can be said of you," she replied starkly. Hagwin growled.
"Alright, class, settle down," a voice said and they turned to see a forty-five year old Elven woman come into the room. She had short hazel brown hair, blue eyes and ivory skin.
She wore a pair of golden earrings and a monocle. She also wore a red shirt and blue jeans and brown boots.
"I am Nuvian Brynan," she said, "and I will be your magic teacher for today. Beldroth Wranzumin is out on an errand today." "Magic?" Rilitar repeated in confusion.
"I thought Elves couldn't do magic," Jandar piped up. "That was in the Old Days," Nuvian chuckled, "when the old Kings and Queens ruled. But things change. This is the new generation. Elves can control magic. Elements, to be more precise."
"Really?" Kavrala said, surprised. Nuvian nodded before she lifted her hand and a little sprout grew from the dirt in the flowerpot.
"It takes energy and careful planning to control magic," she said, "but once you have a clear mind, it can be easy."
Pyria raised her hand.
"Yes, Pyria?" "What elements can an Elf control?"
Nuvian smiled fondly. "Just the natural ones. Earth, Fire, Water and Air. There are often the rare exceptions of Lightning, Telekinesis and Shadow."
"Can an Elf control any or all of them?" Amisra asked curiously, tilting her head.
"There are the chances of an Elf controlling one or two elements. But that is a rare occurrence. It has never been heard of in the Old Days," Nuvian answered. Pyria looked at her hands.
A ten year old Pyria had just finished studying and she had went to the castle gardens. In truth, she had been studying magic in secret.
'Since Mother and uncle Othorion won't tell me, I'll discover it myself,' she thought firmly as she plopped down on the bench and concentrated hard. Her palms sparked before a small ball of fire appeared in the center of her hands. She knew she could only control water and fire. For her tenth birthday, Rosanhi gave her a bracelet that allowed her to practice geokinesis.
She smiled excitedly and she looked at the roses. She held her hand out and vines slowly grew around her arm. They were tingly but they didn't hurt. She giggled softly before she looked at the fountain and narrowed her eyes in concentration.
The vines withered away and the fire faded as a stream of water slithered in Pyria's direction.
She giggled excitedly and clapped her hands. "I did it! I did it!"
She glanced behind her and froze. Ten year old Aubron was staring at her with wide eyes before he spun around and started running.
"W-wait!" She yelped, jumping to her feet. She ran after him.
Aubron ran over to his brothers and Pyria's sisters. "She was using magic! She was using magic!" He yelled, "we gotta tell an adult!"
"What?!" Lythienne gasped. Pyria jumped in front of Aubron, "no! I'll get in trouble!"
"That's the point! You're a human! And humans don't have elements; you'll probably do something bad!" He said.
"I won't!" She snapped. "Liar!" He yelled, pouncing on her.
"H-hey! Get off of her!" Zestari yelled. Connak quickly ran to get an adult. A few other children gathered around, watching Aubron and Pyria wrestle.
Aubron wrapped his hands around Pyria's neck.
"Humans like you are evil!" He growled, "you're not even supposed to be here!"
"Aubron, ENOUGH!" Rosanhi shouted angrily, "release her this instant!"
Tears filled Pyria's vision and her eyes glowed a bright blue. Fire wrapped around her hands before she swiped her claws across Aubron's face. The force of the hit sent Aubron flying to the side and he landed hard on the ground. A chorus of gasps filled the air.
"Pyria!" Malonne gasped, her eyes widening. Pyria flinched as she scrambled backwards, shaking. Aubron started wailing as blood ran down the side of his face. There were three or four gashes on his face and temple.
Pyria whimpered as she looked to Lythienne who ran over to her and pulled her into a tight hug. There was the sound of footsteps and the two looked up to see Elisen and Othorion.
"Pyria," Othorion said coldly and the young girl flinched. He firmly grabbed her hand and hauled her to her feet before he picked her up and took her into the castle.
Othorion walked into a room and set her down. "I-I'm sorry, uncle," Pyria sniffled, "I-I didn't mean to."
"Child, do you have any idea what you've done?" He said, "how many have times have I told you not to use your magic?"
"I-I was scared! He was hurting me!" She whimpered. Othorion stomped his foot on the floor, "that's no excuse! You don't use your magic. Ever!"
He sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. "And against Voron's third brat, no less. If your mother wasn't the queen of this Realm, House Robinstone would have you killed."
Pyria sniffled.
"And what was this I heard about you using your magic?" He asked. She stiffened, "I-I wasn't using it!"
"DO NOT LIE TO ME!" He bellowed. The poor girl wailed and curled into a fetal position, covering her head. Othorion sighed deeply, his anger partially fading. He could not blame the girl. She deserved to use her magic out in the open but it was times like these where she couldn't. Where she could be hidden away from the eyes of future Houses and Realms. And against their future enemies.
He was rather thankful that he had become her teacher and caretaker while Elisen was busy with royal duties. And he was glad that Pyria was under the protection of his House, along with House Ravenkeep and Lockfield.
"Against the wall," he said. Pyria sniffled as she walked up to the wall and propped herself against it. A thin belt of fire appeared in Othorion's hand before he whipped her back, eliciting cries from the girl.
Once he was done, he looked at Pyria sadly. There were four burn marks on her back. She whimpered and sniffled, rubbing her arms.
"OTHORION! ELISEN!" A familiar voice boomed and Othorion growled.
"Stay here," he said before he walked out of the room, closing the door behind him.
After a few minutes, he came back in before he gently placed a glowing leaf against Pyria's back. The marks and bruises disappeared in a brief green flash.
"I don't punish you to be cruel, dear one," he sighed, "but I need you to understand that there is only so much your mother and I can protect you from."
Pyria looked up at him sadly as he gently pulled her into his arms. "I... I understand. I'm sorry," she said softly. He only rubbed her head in comfort.
Pyria wrapped her arms around herself and she rested her head on the desk.
Malonne glanced at her sister and gently rubbed her head. Pyria looked up at her and nuzzled into her sister's side.
Malonne smiled softly. Nuvian got up, "leave your things here. We're heading to the dojo."
"The dojo?" Pyria repeated, confused. "You will see, dear," Nuvian said as she walked out of the room with the other kids following her.
They walked down the hallway and Pyria could see tapestries of Elves long past fighting against Dragons. She tilted her head as she stared at one particular tapestry that had caught her eye.
It was a tapestry of an Elf standing before a large red and blue Dragon. She stared at it.
"Pyria?"
She blinked and looked at Lythienne. "Are you alright?" She asked.
"I'm okay," Pyria replied with a smile. "Come now, young ones," Nuvian called out. The two girls hurried over to the group and they walked into a large room.
Pyria looked around. The room was spacious and the walls and floor were clean and golden-colored.
"Stay here," Nuvian said, "I'll be back in a bit." She walked out of the room.
The Heirs and Heiresses of the Houses sat in the room.
"What are we even waiting for?" Hagwin huffed, "why are we here?"
"Cross-training with other students from different Realms maybe?" Luthias pipes up. "It would be weird to interrupt magic class for that," Ciliren shrugged.
Hagwin gave Pyria a slight glare. "And bringing the human for it," he huffed, "not like she's allowed to train."
Adamar groaned, "seriously, why is she all you think about? You really are in love. Annoying."
Hagwin glared at him, "knock it off! I don't even care about that sappy garbage- you've just gotten complacent and lazy!"
Caelena huffed, "right, right. It's not like our parents still talk to us when we're not reporting Pyria's daily activities."
Hagwin snarled, "you wanna say that again, you-"
"Guys, stop fighting," Rolim said, keeping them apart.
"Shh! Miss Nuvian is coming back," Helartha said, "and I think someone is with her."
"Attention, young ones," Nuvian said with an excited smile, "today is an exciting day for this class for it has been chosen with two of the Eternal Sun's realm's finest royals. May I introduce you to King Raeran Vavalur of House Seaford."
King Raeran Vavalur was a tall and masculine man who had ivory skin, dark brown hair and brown eyes. He wore dark blue and gray armor and he had a silver crown on his head.
"Whoa!" "Really?" "No way."
"And his heiress herself," Nuvian said with a smile. Pyria looked to see a sixteen year old girl walking up beside her father.
She had porcelain skin, light brown hair and light blue eyes. She wore the same outfit as Pyria did.
"Kaylessa Vavalur."
Pyria stared at her for a moment before she looked away. Kaylessa glanced at her.
"Greetings, young Elves," Raeran said, "it is always an honor to meet the future of our kind. We are visiting this realm so that Kaylessa may train with your class. You will each spar with her until one of you loses or yields."
"Not like it'll be a fair fight," Hagwin huffed under his breath, "I mean, I dunno about you guys but I can beat her. Easy."
"Hagwin wants to go first," Pyria said, startling Hagwin.
"Did you volunteer, Hagwin?" Nuvian asked. The boy stuttered before he swallowed, "yeah."
Walking forward, he gave Pyria an annoyed look but she didn't flinch as she smiled.
He looked at Kaylessa who smiled at him. For some reason, her smile unnerved him.
"As always, be careful with your magic," Nuvian said, "if you fall beyond the outer circle, you're defeated."
"You have ice magic, right? Use it," Kaylessa said.
Hagwin scoffed, "don't think I'll need it."
"Hagwin, was it? The attack is yours," Raeran said, "ready... charge."
Hagwin charged at Kaylessa.
He swung at her but she was quick to dodge. She kicked his legs out from under her and he yelped as he fell on his back. He glared up at her.
"You yield?" She asked. He growled before he blew frost in her face. She shielded her face before she grabbed him and tossed him over her shoulder.
He yelped as he fell to the floor again and he widened his eyes as she jumped at him only to land on her feet next to him.
"Kaylessa!" Raeran scolded lightly.
"Snap! Broke your back. I win," she said. Hagwin scrambled to his feet, "I didn't yield! You wanna break my back, you better break it for real!"
"I can do that," Kaylessa replied. "Kaylessa, no," Raeran sighed.
"Yeah?" Hagwin challenged. "No one is breaking anyone's back," Nuvian said as she and the others applauded. "Well done, Hagwin. Come back now."
Hagwin walked over to them.
"What was that about beating her easy?" Fildarae asked with a smug grin.
"You can go next, Fildarae," Nuvian said and the girl cursed silently under her breath.
One by one, every young elf except Pyria and Sylvar went and one by one, they either yielded or were beaten.
Sylvar didn't want to go.
"Well I suppose that's everyone," Nuvian chuckled. "What about her?" Kaylessa asked.
Pyria looked at her then at Nuvian who had a concerned look.
"Step forward, young one," Raeran said. Pyria swallowed before she slowly came forward.
"Pyria, is it? Are you familiar with your magic?" Raeran asked.
"Using it is forbidden. I'm not an Elf," she replied. "Nonetheless, for this specific occasion, you are permitted to," Raeran said gently.
"But my caretaker, Othorion-"
"He answers to the Eclipse Council. He and your mother will be informed that this was asked of you."
She gave a hesitant nod and looked at Kaylessa.
"At the ready, Kaylessa has the first attack," Raeran said, "charge!"
Kaylessa ran at Pyria who quickly dodged her. She concentrated hard before watery tentacles flew at Kaylessa who jumped up to the side to dodge them.
Pyria got on all fours before she leapt up and whacked her in the face. She landed on her feet and grunted as Kaylessa tackled her.
Her feet scraped against the ground before she yanked herself away from Kaylessa's grip.
She ran at her and Kaylessa quickly dodged.
Kaylessa charged at her. Pyria growled before she fired golden flames at her.
"Whoa! Is that golden fire?!" Ciliren gasped, her eyes wide.
Raeran watched with a concerned frown. He had seen humans use fire elements and they would be all sorts of colors. But he didn't know if this was a bloodline of a sort.
Kaylessa dodged the flames before she tackled Pyria to the floor.
Pyria shoved her away with her feet before she ran around with Kaylessa chasing her.
"Get her already!" "Kick her butt!" "You can do it!"
Pyria glanced at Kaylessa fearfully. She could feel her heart pounding and fear locked her mind.
She spun around and slid across the floor on a stream of water before she leapt into the air, a pair of midnight black dragon wings appearing from her back.
"Whoa!" Kaylessa yelped and she grunted as Pyria slammed into her. The two flew across the room and slammed into the wall.
"Pyria!" Lythienne exclaimed.
"Kaylessa!" Raeran shouted. Pyria groaned as she felt her nose bleeding. She looked at Kaylessa and yelled in surprise when she saw her forehead bleeding.
"That... that was amazing!" Kaylessa exclaimed excitedly, "I've never seen anything like that before! Do it again! I'll be ready this time!"
"I think that's enough," Nuvian said quickly with a nervous smile as she pulled Pyria close, "Pyria is entirely untrained and not in control of her magic. I fear further harm may come to them both if this continues. And I fear for my head if Queen Elisen hears of this."
"Understood, Nuvian," Raeran chuckled, "I believe that's all from Kaylessa as well." Kaylessa stuck her tongue out at her father.
"That was awesome!" Kendel said. "You kicked her butt!" Thalia grinned.
Pyria looked at Kaylessa, "a-are you okay?" "I'm fine! I've been through worse!" She said reassuringly.
Pyria made a noise of worry and Kaylessa smiled before she ruffled her hair. "You did really good for a human though! I hope I see you again, Pyria!"
She waved at her as she ran after her father.
Pyria looked at her hands. 'Am I really that powerful?'
