Chapter 1: A Vow in Time
"Your parents were supposed to be killed by the catapults I rained on their little castle. But when we went through the rumble, we didn't find their bodies. They had escaped. With you, as it seems. Your parents were nothing but imbeciles."
"We'll see about that, Sophie Adams! One day, you will have to face a situation where you have to make a very important decision. We'll meet again!"
"You're going to be just like us one day. All alone with the weight of your own sorrows harbouring your sanity."
"The world is a cruel cruel place. And this is no place for a woman like you to fall to her knees at the expense of her sacrifices."
"The future is not one to look forward to. This is the beginning of the end."
"Sophie! Sophie, my love."
The eyes of the brunette opened in a frantic manner. It took the woman a few seconds to see her husband's face above hers, having been crying in her sleep. The world was foggy but his voice was the one true north she could rely on. "Caspian?" She asked as she wiped her face and looked up at him properly. "What...."
"You were struggling in your sleep," he said, removing the strands of hair out of her face softly with two fingers. He hadn't wanted to wake her up halfway through her sleep but he couldn't stand by seeing her wither. He couldn't see her hurt in any way. "Nightmares again?"
Sophie sniffed. "I don't really remember....What time is it?"
Caspian looked at the window in the distance and saw the sky lighten. "Dawn is breaking."
She nodded. They had gone to sleep earlier than they usually would have. No wonder she was feeling tired. "I was talking in my sleep, wasn't I?"
Caspian smiled softly, still brushing her hair to calm her down. He kissed her forehead as it pained him to see her this way. Sophie had been muttering in her sleep more often and he could only connect it to the nightmares. He wished he could help her because if he could go through her nightmares for her, he would gladly do it. If he had to walk through Hell because that's what it would take to be with her, he would do it.
"It's better than laughing in your sleep, I suppose."
Sophie scoffed and smiled. "That's true." She looked at him and then buried her face in his chest. "I told you that you would have to deal with me like this. I guess I left out the part where I have trouble sleeping." She played with the collar of his white tunic to control her breathing.
Caspian kissed the top of her head. "And I meant when I said that I couldn't wait to do it." He put his arms around her and brushed his fingers over her left arm. "For better or for worse, remember?"
She nodded, resting her head against his warm chest. "We should get up sometime."
Caspian wrapped his arms around her tightly. "No," he whispered in her ear.
"You can't say 'no' to waking up, Cas. We have a lot of work to do."
"I don't know about work. I want to lie here with my wife," Sophie smiled, still not believing that they were bound together for eternity, with all the vows in both their traditions.. "And forget about the rest of the world. But even though I can't do it," he sighed. "At least us have these few moments."
It had been two years since the much awaited Royal wedding that took place. Two years since Sophie was not only Sophie but the Heir of Narnia. She had adjusted to the changes that came along with it but she and Caspian made sure to not let anyone make them feel indifferent.
The Council had grown to letting Sophie make major decisions as she got familiar with the entire politics of Narnia. She had set laws to match her Other World's so that there was equality among all. Nobody would be discriminated against for their faith or who they loved.
Because love is love, and nobody can change that.
Caspian was fully supportive of this decision. He understood how important it was for everyone to know what Sophie and he himself had in mind. One's faith or culture should not have to differentiate them from others when it actually acts as a binding factor. The people of Narnia were extremely joyous at this passing law as it gave them the freedom to not hide who they were, although some still kept their relationships private.
It was a long day at the meetings. The Council was still on about the bandits that were in Narnia but the Narnians never found a trace of them. But what they did not notice was a certain half-man, half-giant's silence during this topic.
Well, time doesn't wait for everyone but everything gets revealed in time.
Trumpkin, who had been promoted to the Head of the Council, talked about the topic that had been hushed upon the entirety of four years since their High Queen returned to Narnia - the Witches of Charn. They may have defeated Jadis, but Olivis was still out there. And after the existence of Dhruvika, so was Carmis. What were they planning? Why did they want to invade Narnia so much that they had prejudices against human beings?
Because whatever it was, it wasn't going to be a pretty sight.
"We have had no discrepancy anywhere, Your Majesties," Glenstorm said.
Sophie was disappointed as fear surged through her. Her nightmares had been manipulated by Jadis in the past, and from what was happening to her over the past few days, she was sure that something was coming their way. Maybe they had control over it, maybe they didn't.
But what she did know was that Narnia wasn't safe as long as the Witches were alive.
"Make sure to have everyone on alert," she told them once again. "I can't explain it really but they may execute their plan soon. Coriakin did tell us that it won't be easy to take on them easily."
Speaking of the old star, he had sent an important message to the King and High Queen of Narnia regarding apprentices that he required - two, to be specific. The Fae Realm required two volunteers from Narnia for two of its rulers to live in the open lands. It was a part of a hundred years of traditions.
"We haven't decided whom to send yet," answered Caspian once the Professor addressed it. "It's a very tricky position because whichever child accepts this will have to move to the island and stay with the magician. It's not easy to ask someone so much."
"But we will choose the worthy," said Sophie. "That much we can assure you of."
The only constraint that was on their hands was time itself.
After the long day of addressing political issues, Sophie fell directly on the diwan in their room. "I can't do this anymore." She held her forehead with one hand. "It was hearing about the meetings at first, then attending unofficial meetings and now," she groaned. "it's attending meetings all day long."
Caspian smirked as he loosened his tunic and sat on the floor, resting his head against Sophie's legs. "It will get better. They are only worried about the uncertainties like everyone else. And look at the bright part. It's only every week."
Sophie took a pillow and placed it on top of her face. "I can't do this." She felt him shift his weight and move his head away. She lifted the pillow to see him dressing up again. "Cas?"
He turned to her and held his hand out. "Come with me."
She frowned. "Where? It's way too late."
Caspian smiled as he crouched before her, looking her right in the eyes. "Come with me."
She narrowed her eyes on her. "No."
His smile grew as he leant closer, only a few inches from hers. He watched her breath catch and her cheeks reddening. He loved the person before him more than he loved himself, and to think of how grateful he was to know her love was impossible to believe.
"How about now?"
Sophie cocked her head to one side. "Alright." She gave him her hand and led her out of the room and down the staircases of castle Cair Paravel. "Do you remember the time you took me out to dance in the rain?"
"How could I forget? I was terrified that you would refuse and I didn't have any other excuse for disturbing you."
Sophie was awestruck. "You could never disturb me, Cas." She hugged his arm and rested her head on his shoulder only for a few seconds before resuming their usual stance of walking side by side with their hands together. "Were you really trying to come up with an excuse when I opened the door?"
"It was either 'I knocked by accident' or 'The castle is on fire and we need to evacuate!'." Sophie was trying to hold back her laughter, making him roll his eyes. "Four years I was able to keep this a secret."
Sophie placed a quick kiss on his cheek. "You're amazing, you know?"
He chuckled. "I know, love. I know," he said. "We're here."
Sophie recognised where they were. "Oh....I should have known!"
Caspian had brought her out to the palace grounds where they had gotten married to each other before the actual ceremony. The wedding jitters had gotten to them eventually and they decided that a private ceremony was better. Besides, they weren't trying to run away or elope, because the original wedding was still going to take place. They only wanted to be among their loved ones.
Caspian stopped at the exact place that they had once stood, right under the willow tree that had stood there since the beginning. What they didn't know was that it was the same tree under which High King Farhan and Queen Helena had renewed their vows. It was the tree that protected Narnia and especially the castle from harm.
He took her hands in his like they had when the ceremony had started. "We stood here right under this tree and decided that we were going to be with each other for the rest of our lives." He turned his head to his left and could imagine what had exactly happened that evening. "You walked down our aisle wearing the red lehenga that you had always talked about. Indy....In...."
"Indian culture."
He nodded. "Indian culture." He smiled. "I was so sure that you were the angel that was sent for me."
It was time.
Caspian stood under the willow tree at the end of the aisle decorated with flower petals to create a clear path. He was wearing a proper suit, traditionally worn in the Other World. He thought he looked ridiculous and was concerned that he wouldn't be able to pull it off. But Nina, Trumpkin and the Professor who were witnesses to the occasion told him that he looked as handsome as ever.
Coming from Nina, he would have thought they were saying it for the sake of it. But Trumpkin had admitted it and that was enough.
Caspian was ready to wait there till the stars shone if that's what it took to see Sophie again after they had spent months apart. This was going to be their night and no one else's. They would have to go back to pretending to be separate, but they would know the truth.
They would already be bound to each other.
Sophie looked at herself in the mirror and adjusted her red lehenga. She wasn't trying to disrespect tradition by wearing a dress that wasn't a part of her culture as much as wanting to support unity. If she couldn't do it back in the Other World, she could do it in Narnia. That's what motivated her to think about the rule that everyone was free to follow any culture that they believed in.
She walked down the aisle, scared that she would mess up. She was going to have to be an example for Narnians - her people. She couldn't even think about disappointing them. It was like she had told Caspian. She was going to be the Queen that Narnia deserved. But seeing Caspian waiting for her down the aisle, all her worries faded away. She was so sure that she could do anything as long as he was with her. Caspian walked towards her as she reached the end of the aisle.
"Hi." He was smiling like an idiot, but he did not care.
"Hi!"
The Professor cleared his throat, seeing the way Sophie and Caspian had love in their eyes. They were going to get emotional like Nina was if he didn't start the ceremony as Sophie had guided him. It was a personal hobby for him to learn more about the Other World and when Sophie asked him to officiate their wedding in the different traditions of the Other World, he leapt up with joy.
"Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to join our King Caspian," He nodded at his oldest student. "And Queen Sophie." He bowed to her. "In holy matrimony. Are we ready with the vows?"
Caspian and Sophie nodded. 'Well then," sniffed Nina.
"Your Majesty?" The Professor looked at Caspian. "We will hear you first."
Caspian nodded and looked at Sophie. He couldn't hold back his happiness with a smile. He was finally at that moment of his life where all that he ever wanted and waited for was right before his eyes. "Sophie." He took a deep breath in. "All my life, I've been running away from people. Whether it be my parents protecting me or what happened with my Uncle....I've always wanted to be worthy of something. Of someone. I have earned my position as King of Narnia, but it seems so less when I think of how worthy I need to be to deserve you."
He took another deep breath to keep his voice from cracking. "You make me a better man than I ever thought I could be. You give me a reason to believe that the world is a better place....a good place....with all the goodness that you have in you. And I am honoured to spend the rest of my life with you."
Sophie may have been a small writer, but everything that Caspian said is all that she had ever wanted to hear. She had wanted to be wanted. She wanted to have a good life.
"Your Majesty?" The Professor prompted her.
"I think I've forgotten what I wanted to say." She chuckled, sending smiles to everyone else as well. "Okay." She closed her eyes for a second and took a deep breath. "Caspian, all I've ever wanted growing up was to have a family." She was so hoping that her face wasn't red. She needed to get this out. "Whether it be to be accepted in one or to have one of my own....all I've ever wanted was to be looked at like you are looking at me right."
Caspian laughed as he looked at the ground for a moment. Sophie held onto his hands a little tighter. "I have tried to tell you everything about myself, but everything seems like such a big word, because there were some parts of my life that I couldn't relive by talking about it. You've seen that side of me now and you still found that kindness in you to love me as you do. There is no one I would think of standing in this moment....than you. And I want to spend the rest of my life making you feel the same way."
Caspian was sure that he was going to cry. He was already halfway at that point. He wished he could kiss Sophie then but he would have to wait for the ceremony to get over.
The Professor sniffed, moved by the words that his students had used. His job as a mentor was done. "Yes." He cleared his throat. "It's time for the actual vows, as it is called." He looked at Caspian. "Do you, Caspian the Tenth, take Sophie Adams, to be your wife, to have and to hold, for better or for worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and cherish, from this day forward as long as you both shall live?"
"Qubool hai." He chuckled, finally letting the weight off his chest.
"Do you, Sophie Adams, take, Caspian the Tenth, to be your husband, to have and to hold, for better or for worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and cherish, from this day forward as long as you both shall live?"
Sophie nodded. "Qubool hai."
Nina was trying not to squeak while crying and Trumpkin was trying his best not to let anyone know about his emotions. But it was a day filled with love and happiness and it moved the stone heart that he claimed his to be.
"It is my greatest honour to pronounce you, husband and wife in every realm - existing and non-existent alike. You may kiss the bride now."
"I don't want you to go through this alone," revealed Caspian. "You've been feeling tired these past few days because of all the work we have to abide by, but I don't ever want you to feel alone. I made those vows to keep them. To stand by them and you. I'm right here and I shall always be here."
Sophie nodded. She had been extremely tired these days. "How can I feel alone when you are here with me? You don't have to be worried about me." She kissed him passionately only to be lifted in his arms. "Ah!" She laughed as she wrapped her arms around his neck.
"Shall we go back to our room then, Mrs. Caspian?"
She nodded courteously, blushing as to what 'back to our room' meant. "We shall, Mr. Adams."
