"You're saying you didn't hear anything?" Inspector Devendra Singh inquired Devaki.
"No sir, I assure you all of us were asleep. We got up only after we heard the sirens." Devaki answered confidently. Although she was shaken by the sudden events that took place, she had to appear strong. After all, she was the daughter of an extremely famous and well-known lawyer.
"What about you all? None of you all heard anything?" Inspector turned towards the rest of the girls.
"No, sir." All of them replied. The Inspector nodded slightly and then moved onto other people.
Residents of the entire building were down on the podium. The sudden disappearance of Natasha Dalal had stricken fear and confusion amongst everyone's minds.
"What in the heaven happened there?!" Sameeksha grabbed her head in despair.
"This is so shocking. I'm pretty sure Natasha's boyfriend has kidnapped her." Bandana said sitting down on a chair.
"No!" Devaki exasperated. "There's a lot more than meets the eye. We can't say if her boyfriend is the culprit or not. We have no evidence."
"The two of them were in the midsts of a heated argument! What more evidence do you need?!" Bandana asked Devaki.
"That's the whole issue. You guys are just going by the basics and believing what you're eyes saw. Look from my perspective. The case is not so simple." Devaki explained. "Why do you think the boyfriend is stupid enough to commit a crime when he knows that all of us could be strong witnesses because we were present in the house a few hours before things went downhill?"
"She's got a point." Malavika said. Devaki sat down on a bench.
"I can't believe. We were there. We were at the crime scene some time before the crime took place. If only I had stayed there for longer..." Devaki sighed. This case was like a big opportunity for Devaki. She knew she had it in her genes, the ability to decode cases. She often got into fights with her father who claimed that she could never be a good lawyer. She wanted to prove him wrong.
"Guys, we're not in CID. Let's not get into it." Parul suggested. Bandana was lost in deep thought. Sameeksha nudged her.
"What's wrong?" Sam asked with concern.
"You do realise all of us are also committing a crime by not telling the police the full truth. We haven't told them that we were there in the house. They will find out sooner or later. Our fingerprints must be there on the door." Bandana's limbs were shaking.
"Hey, hey, hey, calm down buddy...sit here and relax first. Don't work yourself up so much." Sameeksha made Bandana sit on the bench beside Devaki.
"You're absolutely right Bandana. My only motto of instructing you guys to do this was to buy us some time. We haven't yet analysed the consequences of telling that to the police. We'll tell them tomorrow. Just let me consult some legal advice from my father." Devaki assured her.
"I feel the consequences of not telling the entire truth to the police are going to be worse than the consequences of telling them the truth." Sameeksha said.
Parul's phone rang. The colour drained from her face.
"Guys, Siddharth is calling." Parul became tensed.
"Tell him the whole thing but tell him not to speak about it with anyone. Also, if and only if, you trust your own boyfriends then tell them about it but make sure it stays between us. Am I clear?" Devaki commanded.
"Yes!" All of them replied.
