Nebraska bound
The radio was turned on to a station that had a host called citizen Z. He spoke in voice similar to a stereotypical weather man would talk.
"Well it looks like the Zunami is making its way into Nebraska and is looking to go straight to Kansas. It may be a few days until it is fully out of Nebraska." He spoke fuzzily.
"I thought we were heading to Nebraska?" Cassandra said breaking the silence that over took us.
"Yeah we are." Warren said keeping her eyes on the road. "Hopefully by the time we get there it will be mostly deserted."
"We have about three hours until we cross state borders." I mumble, I had gone back and forth between the house and a small town just on the skirts of Kansas. At the time I just wanted something to do, but later I figured it's safer to stay inside the house closed off from the despicable world outside. "Why do you even want to head up north? Other than the fact that Zs and winter don't mix."
"Technically we are supposed to be heading west." Murphy said clenched up against his window. Not paying attention to the questionable look on my face.
"West what's out west?" I ask for anyone to answer.
"A CDC lab." Warren said
"Are you guys looking for OxyContin to sell or something like that?" These people don't seem like the type of people to sell drugs, but I find it harder to meet people that don't want some kind of drug.
"No we are going, because Murphy is the only human being to survive a zombie bite." She said some what hesitantly. To be perfectly honest it made a lot of sense. From the weird discoloration of his skin to his eyes that looked like embers from the a fire. It all made sense. He looked sick from bite but was perfectly healthy at the same time.
"Cool." I said amazed I probably looked like a little kid staring at the skeleton of a dinosaur.
"What no can is see your bites or prove it?"
"Nah I'm not really interested in those things. Can ask you a few questions?"
"Whatever kid." He huffed
"How many times?"
"Eight." He said as though it should be common knowledge. I was amazed that the man wasn't spewing out blood from his mouth.
"Whoa. How did it happen?"
"I volunteered."
"Hmmm interesting."
"How long has it been?"
"Only God knows that answer. Anymore doll face?"
"No I'm good for now." Silence retaking its position in the car. We drove for a good twenty minutes until Doc couldn't take it anymore.
"Alison what's your last name?" He said
"Why do you ask?"
"I once knew a girl who looked a lot like you and I was wondering if she was your mom?"
"It's Swan."
"Nope never mind then."
"Okay?"
"Did you have a brother named Luke?" Warren asked
"Yeah." I answered quietly
"Well I'll be damned. I knew your brother. I was stationed at Fort Story in Virginia beach for a small time. I can't believe you're little Alison Swan. Luke talked about you all the time. He told me that you were the at the top of your classes and were going into Harvard. He used carry around a picture of you in his cap."
"What small apocalyptic work this is." Murphy butted in. A smile plastered on my face. That was Luke always proud of his little sister even if it was a small achievement he would say "every achievement is worth celebrating."
"Harvard? You attended Harvard."
"Yeah I studied psychology and medicine."
"Well we got a real mD in the room" I rolled my eyes.
"I barely scratched the surface I had only been in college for about 2 and half years."
"Anyway whatever happened to your brother?" Warren asked a sudden removal of the happy lightness was replaced with a gloomy fog.
I sighed then replied, "I don't know. He was deployed in Louisiana and wasn't going to be back for another few months."
"I'm sorry to hear that." A hand rested on my shoulder. I look back it was 10k, I smile then place my hand on his and gave it a light squeeze. He was the only one that knew that I lost more than just Luke.
"What about your parents?" Doc asked innocently as if he didn't know already.
"Dead." 10k's grip tighten slightly on my shoulder. Doc face softened, then he frowned.
"Man to have to kill your own parents all by yourself. Harsh."
"I wasn't alone I had my twin brother Joshua."
"Where's he?" Cassandra asked. She seemed slightly interested. Maybe it's because I had good looks and knowing that I have a twin brother that may look as good or even better than me spiked an interest.
"He's a z."
"Oh." She looked away from me.
"Why didn't you give him mercy?" Doc asked
"Guys your asking some tough questions." 10k spoke out. Maybe he felt the sadness that was contained in me, or maybe he didn't want me to start crying. I've been told that I have an ugly crying face.
"Sorry princess didn't mean to make you feel uncomfortable."
"I'll be fine." No I wouldn't I never would. I looked back out the window dropping my hand from 10k's, but he kept his firmly planted on my shoulder. Doc turned back around. No one said anything after that. We continued to drive past valleys and fields. We weren't on a major highway, so there weren't as many cars as you think there would be. But we passed the occasional truck. After we past at least the fifth one Warren slowed.
"We only have gas for another hour or so I'll check that truck. If need to go now, because I'm not stopping again." She sounded like my mom. Every time we went on a family trip Josh would always chug down a huge thing of Mountain Dew. She hated stopping at old restaurants and rest stops.
Everyone got out at once. I walked other to the other side of the car where Murphy had already started walking out into the middle of the field. Doc was digging through the the back seat looking for something.
"Murphy wheres that water you brought?" He called out.
"I didn't bring any water I set it down on the table back at the house and told the boy to bring it." Murphy called back.
"Kid where's the water."
"He didn't ask me to bring any water." 10k replied confused
"Are you saying we don't have any water?!" Cassandra yelled.
"Yeah." Murphy said bluntly.
"Bad news guys that truck didn't have any gas." Warren said
"We have no water." Cassandra blurted out. No water means all our bodies could shut down if he don't find water in the next three. The only to maybe survive is Murphy.
"Who was supposed to get it?" All of us turn to a peeing Murphy.
"Yes?" He looked over hands down by his crouch.
"We're all going to die." I say for everyone to hear.
