Chapter 15
HITTING THE 'MARC'
What a turn out last night was!
Collége François DuPont held its 65th anniversary event and boy did it deliver in both drama and star status. As many people know, Collége François DuPont has educated some of the best and brightest in modern Paris. From Max Kanté tech extraordinaire, to yours truly Alya Césaire.
Last night held the night of all nights in the school's courtyard where an avast array of ex-students and celebrities enjoyed the evening, dressed in their best as some of the most loved characters in television and film. From the cast of Grease, to The Simpsons and even a gang of Stormtroopers, no expense was spared.
But the beautiful costumes, and awe inspiring decorations were not all the event had going for it.
Half way through the evening comic book creator Nathaniel Kurtzberg, 24, dropped to one knee presenting his long term boyfriend and ex François DuPont survivor Marc Anciel, 23, with the most extraordinary forever ring whilst asking him to marry him. It was no surprise to all their classmates when Marc immediately said yes.
'Mode Mania' would like to congratulate the couple on their new engagement, and wish them the best for their up and coming nuptials.
In other news, the event saw the 'Agreste's' together at an event for the first time in seven months. Adrien Agreste, 24, had originally attended the event solo, only for his beautiful wife Vivica Agreste, 23, to arrive shortly after the event had started.
Attendees at the event said that the couple were 'so in love' and that '[they] could barely keep their hands off each other'. Adrien had joined the rest of his class dressing up as main T-Bird 'Danny Zuko' and his wife wowed the crowd with an incredible replica of Jessica Rabbits' famous red dress.
During the proposal Vivica looked reminiscent, covering Adrien with displays of affection obviously happy for their longtime friends' public engagement.

Adrien stood outside the Louvre waiting for his date for the day to meet him. He was 20 minutes early, unable to lay around after the previous night's events. His mind scrambled to piece together what had happened; it had all been planned so well, from getting Kim to pair him with Marinette, Félix sorting out the gala and Vivica, and then speaking to Marinette, it was just a shame everything went out the window when his wife decided to appear, and Frankie ambushed Nino.
He'd left his best friend asleep in his apartment, not wanting Nino to return home after everything that had happened.
He had no idea that Nino was holding onto so much, proving what a shitty friend Adrien was. He'd been so caught up in his own problems he never thought to ask Nino what was really happening with Frankie, instead he laughed it off alongside his friend, not understanding that his Nino was begging for help.
A whole lot of sadness which could have been fixed if the truth had been told from the beginning. But wasn't that the answer to everything? To tell the truth and take the consequences? He knew he was harbouring a secret himself, well more than one, but he couldn't tell. The cons far outweighed the pros and if holding onto these secrets meant he'd lose friends along the way so be it. He wouldn't change what he'd done, he couldn't change what he'd done.
Checking his hair was still tightly tucked underneath his cap he looked out at the early morning tourists, noticing the line outside of the Louvre had grown considerably in the short time he'd been standing there. A con of living in a tourist bull pit.
He sighed and rubbed the back of his neck, only ten days and he'd be flying out to Argentina, hopefully with Marinette by his side. He was thrilled about the idea of having her to himself, away from the hustle and bustle of their day to day lives, and with a chance to reconnect on a different level. They still got along like a house of fire, and he craved time with her, almost as much as he craved his morning coffee which he'd just finished.
As he deposited the empty cup into the trash can, he heard the voice of the woman he'd been waiting for.
"Arr, there he is. The man of the hour." Turning his head, Adrien came face-to-face with Jess who seemed to be carrying a tabloid paper in her hands. "Would you care to explain this?" She slammed the paper into his chest with enough force to wind him.
He moved the paper from her hands and unrolled it to look at the front cover.
'Paris' 'it' couple on night out celebrating Collége François DuPont's 65th anniversary.
"Oh, shit!" He continued skimming the article catching words such as 'perfect', 'romantic', 'in love' and he thought he was going to throw up. The picture was quite obviously Adrien putting Vivica in her place after she arrived the previous evening, however the tabloid paper had interpreted it as Adrien 'looking out for his pregnant wife', and getting 'angry at the paparazzi'.
"I thought you were trying to win Marinette over, not conoodle with the enemy?" Adrien looked up at Jess, noticing the amusement dancing in her eyes.
Oh har-de-har!
He rolled his eyes, stepping forward to deposit it in a trash can where it belonged.
"Hey! That was mine! I was going to take it home and frame it as one of 'Chat Noir's' biggest failures. There's quite a nice collection building up."
"Oh shut it!" He said, his voice laced with amusement and zero aggression. "So what are we actually looking for?" They began to make their way over to the Louvre entrance. They were going to be using Adrien's celebrity status to cut the queue and get straight in. He wouldn't usually flash himself around this much, but they needed to enter and get this done before the crowds built too much.
"We ... my dear kitty cat ... are looking for a feather."
Adrien stopped walking and crossed his arms over his chest. "A feather? You are kidding, right? All of this for a fucking feather?"
Jess smirked at him and shook her head. "LB's language is rubbing off on you, Whiskers, plus you're the only one who kids around here, I'm being deadly serious."
"But a feather? You sure LB wouldn't have been better for the job?"
"You know she can't know about all this yet. I'll let her know once we've got the feather and you've sorted out the shit with your father ... which is dragging now by the way. How long have you been doing this 'following his crap' boogaloo?" Jess never held back when she was giving it to him. One of the reasons why he'd chosen her to reveal his identity to. They'd kept in touch since their time in New York back in their mid teens, and with everything happening with his father, Jess and Ayon were the only two he thought could help him. Telling Ladybug was not an option. Not yet anyway.
"Three long frustrating years." He said, letting out a frustrated sigh.
"Exactly, so I don't care if you sneeze the Eiffel Tower into oblivion, we're going to get this done and then you can play house with your little lady and we can all finally live happily ever after ... well, until the next big villain appears." She started to walk again, moving away from him and towards the exit. "And take your damn hat off," she shouted back, knowing full well they weren't going to get in with Adrien looking like a reject of 'One Direction'.
His phone buzzed in his pocket and he pulled it out alongside his ID. A quick glance at the name made his heartbeat wildly, and his head to spin. Good morning, Ms. Dupain-Cheng. Placing his passcode into his phone, he opened the message from Marinette and smiled. She was such a sweet girl, constantly worrying about everyone else.
Marinette
How's Nino this morning?
He considered the many options to text back. He's shit? He wants to curl into a ball and never be seen again? He's embarrassed? He has a horrendous hangover? Considering all his options he went for the simplest.
Adrien
He's as you'd expect after yesterday's revelations. I'm really worried about him and don't know what to do.
Placing the phone back into his pocket, he stepped forwards and took his hat off flashing his ID at the security staff. They let him and Jess through the exit, before guiding them to the staircase and into the main foyer. The guard pulled out a walkie talkie, speaking down to someone and asking them to meet Adrien at the bottom of the staircase. Once 'Derek' had responded, Adrien and Jess proceeded to venture down and into the main hall of the museum.
His phone buzzed again, and he pulled it from his pocket.
Marinette
Do you think we should contact anyone? The police? Interpol? Ladybug and Chat Noir?
Adrien couldn't help his grin. Contacting both the heroes of Paris would be a lot easier than she thought. Wiping over his mouth, he used the action to sober up, it was about Nino, not how thrilled he was to see her type his alter ego's name.
Adrien
As much as I would like to step in and be his hero, I don't think it's our place to do it. I'll speak to him again, and see if I can't persuade him to speak to someone.
"Put your phone away, Whiskers, I'm sure Marinette can live without you texting her back for a couple of minutes." Jess followed the security team as they led them around the crowds and into a secluded part of the museum, where they were issued with free passes for the day. Adrien held up a hand, refusing to take them from the customer service representative.
"We're paying." Adrien said, handing over his card to a shell shocked employee. He was unsure whether they were shocked because he was Adrien Agreste or that Adrien Agreste was actually requesting to pay. His phone buzzed again, and as Jess asked where the Greek mythology exhibition was, he pulled the phone from his pocket, keeping it low and out of the way from her prying eyes.
Marinette
That's something you're definitely good at.
He smiled leaving it a few seconds before responding.
Adrien
I don't know if I should be flattered by that or annoyed?
Her response was quick, and, luckily, Jess was still preoccupied.
Marinette
Definitely flattered.
"Let's go." Placing the phone back in his pocket, he followed Jess as she led him down a number of different corridors, heading in the direction of the Mona Lisa.
"So we're looking for a feather?"
"Not just any feather. It is one from a Siren in Naples. The feather acts like a Miraculous with a creature, half bird half fish, the master of its powers. Whoever wields the feather will be able to lure others to do their bidding. It's been missing for years but Ayon's found evidence it's travelling around in this exhibition and that someone's after it."
"So, what are we going to do? Steal it?" Adrien asked, marching forwards alongside the American hero.
"Yep, and it should be just around -" Suddenly, the gates at the end of the corridors dropped down and alarms echoed through the halls. "What the -?"
Adrien grabbed a hold of Jess' coat, pulling her to the side and behind a wall. "Plagg, Liiri, do you think you can carry on through and see if you can find out what's happening?"
The two kwami's nodded before sinking through the wall and off in the direction of the display.
"Fuck!" Jess said, pulling her arm out of Adrien's grasp and shaking him away from her so she could begin stalking up and down.
"Calm down, we don't know what's happening yet."
Jess looked to Adrien before turning her head away and continuing to march backwards and forwards, biting her nails as she went.
It seemed like forever until Plagg and Liiri returned, and when they did their faces said everything. The feather was gone.
•••••
Marinette couldn't get Nino out of her mind. She just wanted to go over to Adrien's to take him in her arms and tell him he would be okay. That Ladybug was here to defend him. No one should ever be treated the way he had been, and it made her sick to the core to know what her poor friend was being put through. She was finding it increasingly hard to keep it from Alya, and it had been less than ten hours.
She sat on the sofa, checking the emails on her phone to distract her. There were a couple of commissions she was waiting to hear back from, however it was the first email in her inbox that caught her attention. Luka. She hadn't spoken to him in a couple of weeks, and although they'd never fallen out, they'd naturally grew apart. No ill feelings just both now living different lives.
To: MDC
Subject: A proposition ... (Don't you dare make that sound dirty!)
Marinette snorted. Trust Luka to add the little disclaimer. Even after everything they'd been through she would always give him her time, she would always be there for him. He was special to her and they had a friendship that time didn't attack. A smile still settled on her face. She opened the email to see exactly what he was proposing.
Dear Miss Dupain-Cheng,
As you know 'A Wish Too Far' has been a great success in both France and other European countries. Not only has the track gone Platinum it has also been nominated for a 'Brit Award' where Mr. Stone and I have been approached to perform.
Due to the popularity of this event, myself and Mr. Stone would like to inquire about stage costumes designed and made by yourself. We are after two unique costumes plus a stage outfit for Fang, something which would represent both us as performers along with the feelings of the song.
We will need to start the process asap, so please contact us with your availability.
Kind regards,Mr. Couffaine[Luka Couffaine singer/songwriter]
Wow! Never in her life had seen Luka so formal with a message. Grabbing her phone she noticed there was no reply yet from Adrien so she pulled up Luka's number to text him instead.
Marinette
Can you at least buy me dinner first?
She laughed at her own joke, and sat waiting for his reply. Luka wasn't a leave them on 'read' type of guy so she knew he would respond as soon as he'd seen the message. She watched as her message changed from one grey tick to two blue, and started her countdown.
"Three, two -" she pointed at the screen just as it began to blare out Luka's ringtone, 'My Friend's Over You' by New Found Glory, an inside joke regarding Luka's ex boyfriend. Thank God he grew some brains and hadn't gone running back to the attractive douchebag. His ex was a dick of the highest order, and no one could stand him.
Firstly, he attempted to alienate Marinette out of Luka's life, next he made Luka end 'Kitty Section' encouraging Luka to go solo and gain more popularity driving Luka to be overtaken by drugs and alcohol abuse in the early stages of his career. But the final straw came when he walked into Juleka's room whilst she was asleep, climbing into her bed and touching her inappropriately. Juleka's scream woke Luka up causing him to go apeshit and throw the asshole out of the boat and onto the sidewalk, luckily Chat Noir was doing his rounds and saw the commotion coming from the area, swooping down and making it his business too. To say Rick the Prick had been dealt with efficiently would be an understanding. Marinette was extremely proud of how Chat Noir dealt with the situation, and Rhys never contacted Luka ever again.
"Well, well, well ... I don't hear from you for months and then you proposition me? Luka, Luka, Luka, what happened to you? Do I need to have words with Zoé?"
"If you do that I might have to contact Adrien about a little crush which seems to be resurfacing."
Marinette placed a hand over her face, feeling the heat rise in her cheeks, lacking any type of coherent response to Luka.
"Your silence speaks volumes, Marinette."
His laughter rang through the speaker and if he'd been in the room she was certain she would have thrown the phone at him, conking him straight in the head.
"Piss off, Couffaine."
"Temper, temper, Dupain-Cheng. So seriously, how are you? I'm sorry I haven't been better at keeping in touch."
"Don't worry, I'm as much to blame. Life's been kind of crazy."
"I hope it's not too crazy that you're going to turn me down."
She giggled. "You know you and your father have me wrapped around your little finger."
"Like you have us around yours."
The phone went silent, and Marinette just sat smiling. She missed Luka, she'd missed the easy friendship they had, a friendship where she didn't worry about jumping the guy every time they were in the same room together. They were long past any type of desire amongst each other, now comfortably settled in the platonic zone and she wouldn't want it any other way.
"We need costumes in a couple of months and I really want you to do them Marinette, I know my dad does to."
"I'm going to Argentina at the end of the month, but I'm sure I'll have time to start designing."
"Argentina? But you never leave the city?"
He was right she didn't but with Kaalki, plus Chat Noir and Alya holding down the fort, she had nothing to worry about. One word and she would be back. There hadn't been an akuma attack in nine months, so she wasn't exactly worried for one to suddenly hit.
"I know. Exciting isn't it! Adrien got me a temporary job as a dresser for his movie, so we're off to Argentina." She was excited ... after the shock had worn off, of course. She hadn't spoken to Adrien about it since they'd returned from Prague, but she was already planning her swimming costumes and outfits for each day. There was no chance she was turning this experience down.
"Adrien's leaving too?"
She wasn't sure if Luka was asking the question or making a statement. His voice had gone all squeaky and she wondered what was happening on the other end of the phone.
"Is there something wrong with me going with Adrien?" Her eyebrows creased and she couldn't help the frown. Luka had always been supportive of her and Adrien so why would he suddenly be against it. It's not like he knew what had happened between them, their closeness had diluted by the time it all went down.
"No!" His voice squeaked again, before he quickly cleared his throat. "No, no problem at all. You're both leaving Paris ... together ... nope nothing wrong with that. You'll have a fun time."
"Hopefully." She agreed, curiosity still prickling in the back of her mind. "Listen, I need to go, I'll speak to you soon, and send me yours and Jagged's measurements as soon as you can. I know Penny will have them lying around somewhere. Oh, and one last thing. Say 'Hi' to Zoé for me."
She heard him say something away from his phone, a few moments later his deep throaty laugh sounded back.
"She says 'hi' back and that she'll see you at Rose's gala."
They said their goodbyes, Marinette ending the call and placing her phone screen down on the kitchen counter.
"More work Marinette? That's great news!" Tikki flew and settled in front of her holder, her eyes beaming with pride.
"Yeah, it's crazy." She knew exactly what Tikki was hinting at. It didn't take a rocket scientist to work it out. If Marinette could get work away from being a 'Honey' then once she was out of this whole Vivica agreement she could quit and finally move on with her life.
The hate was beginning to drag her down and she was tired of being so angry all the time. She wanted to move past this whole Adrien thing and she wanted to start on her future. A future where maybe she could finally get married and have children, where she didn't distrust men and want to hurt them the way she was hurt. Her heart was finally healing. It had taken three years to start the process but it was happening. Even if the one healing it was the one who'd broken it the most.
She sighed and looked at Adrien's last message. Their conversations flew easier than they ever had before. They could poke and tease; laugh and flirt and not worry about the outcome, it was all so natural, but he was still married, and anything happening between would mean she had put her hand in when it came to whatever Vivica was planning.
Marinette didn't want to destroy Adrien. Not anymore. She wanted to help him, heal him too. He was still that lost boy she knew from ten years ago. A boy trying to find his place in the world and being controlled, and she was finding it increasingly difficult to stay away from him. The more she learned about the mistake of the past, the more she felt pulled towards him, a pull she hadn't felt in years.
With Vivica in mind, she knew she'd be receiving a call from either the woman herself or Peyton at some point today, especially after their meeting last night. Luckily, there was something she could look at whilst she waited that made her feel like she had control, well slight control of the situation.
She walked to her laptop, opening the top and waiting for it to load. As the old but reliable machine warmed itself up, Marinette made her way to the fridge and found a bottle of still lemonade. She opened it and took a swig, turning back to the screen and watching the logo load to its full capacity. Her Lock Screen appeared and begged her for the password.
Strolling back over to where she'd left the offending article, she grabbed a cookie for Tikki and threw it in the kwami's direction. Seating herself on a chair, she entered the password before moving the mouse to her internet browser, opened it up and looked for 'Mode Mania's website. As the page came to life she couldn't help the smug smile. Glaring back at her were two pictures, and she applauded Alya on her quick thinking and super inconspicuous skills.
Marinette scrolled down to read the comments, and luckily for her friend there were hundreds! Everytime an article out did the predicted amount of hits, the writer got a bonus, and looking at the hit count here Alya must be only a few euros away from purchasing a small island off the coast of France.
She began to read, suppressing laughter as she went.
"Oh Mrs Agreste, what a pickle you've got yourself into this time?" She chuckled, placing her chin in her hand as she read comment after comment aimed directly at Paris' 'number two' sweetheart.
@Agrestestan28: Why is she drinking that?
@Adrien_lover_2019: Does Adrien know about this? What is she doing?
@whoareyou?: I know she's not the brightest bulb, but I'm sure she'd know not to drink that in her state.
@Girl_vs_twitter: What a fucking bellend!
@AANumber1fan: Awwww, how cute is Adrien with his friends? And then she goes and does something like this! What a witch!
@Bluefoxes: DON'T FORGET TO CLICK TO EXPERIENCE TO WONDER OF BLUE FOXES BISCUITS. JUST FOLLOW THIS LINK WWW.THISISNOTAFAKEWEBSITE.COM
@WayhemAAAAA: Forget Vivica, look how sweet he looks with Sandy! Now that would be a couple that could battle Ladybug and Chat Noir for Paris' Sweethearts.
@SugarDaddy: @WayhemAAAAA I think I've made out with her before
@WayhemAAAA: @SugarDaddy I've seen your profile picture and there's no way a hotty like that would make out with a shrivelled old prune like you.
@Vivicasimp: Leave her alone! It's stressful being pregnant. I should know, I have 6 kids.
@AdrienforPresident: @Vivicasimp so you're actually saying it's fine to drink alcohol whilst pregnant? I'm quite sure a doctor would disagree.
@Docsforprops: NEED SOMETHING CHECKING OUT. UPLOAD A NAKED PICTURE ON WWW.DOCSFORPROPSNOTPORN.COM AND WE CAN GIVE YOU A FULL PHYSICAL.
@AANumber1Fan: @Vivicasimp how can you support something that could harm ADRIEN'S baby! Though, if she's drinking whilst pregnant who's to say that she hasn't cheated on him too. Obviously the woman has no morals.
@FreeLilaRossi: I don't know about Vivica cheating, does anyone think he looks a little too close to the girl attempting to be Sandy.
@Viv's _a_Div: She's a whore!
@Itshouldbeme: Vivica doesn't deserve a sweetie pie like Adrien. She's just a gold digging wannabe!
@TheNextHawkmoth: Adrien's fucking the girl with the black hair! I just know it!
@WayhemAAAAA: @TheNextHawkmoth - who? Sandy?
@TheNextHawkmoth: @WayhemAAAAA no, the model girl with purple streaks. He poses with her a lot and they seem a little too friendly if you ask me.
@LadyLover007: @TheNextHawmoth she's a lesbian you dumbass! Her and her girlfriend are wonderful, senseless people. Piss off and change your name.
@TheNewHawkmoth: @LadyLover007 watch what you're saying, you don't want to be the next akumatized.
@LadyLover007: @TheNextHawmoth Fuck off back to your cacoon.
@Adriendeservesbetter: Don't you think Sandy looks similar to the girl he pulled from the river? He's spending a lot of time with her.
Marinette reached the bottom of the messages, pleased that only one comment had brought up the Seine incident. She would need to text Alya to keep an eye out, after all she had to make sure Vivica didn't have anything to pin on her, all of this was close enough.
The pictures Alya had posted were very clever, and perfectly positioned. On the first one, the newly engaged couple stood front and centre, however just off to the right Vivica was standing in a rather 'intimate' conversation with Chloé. Vivica had her hand on Chloé's waist, as Chloé leaned in, whispering in Vivica's ear. This was then followed up with a picture of Kim, the girls in the background again and Chloé filling Vivica's glass from a bottle of wine she was holding. The final picture, of Rose and Juleka, had Vivica in the back swigging the drink. There was no way of getting out of this.
Marinette's phone rang within the next half an hour, and as expected it was Peyton.
"Hi Marinette, sorry to interrupt you again on your day off, but Vivica would like you to come in for a face-to-face meeting."
"Why can't it be just with you?" Marinette asked, standing up and heading over to boil her kettle.
"Apparently she needs to talk to you about something important."
"Can't she just pass the message on through you?" The last thing Marinette wanted to do today was see Vivica, especially after last night.
"Marinette, you know how she is. I expect you to be here in an hour."
Peyton put the phone down on Marinette and for the first time in a long time she thought she was going to lose her cool.
"Calm down, Marinette. You getting angry isn't going to help anyone." Tikki attempted to placate her holder only for Marinette to stand and storm into her bedroom.
"I soooooo want to tell that woman to stick it up her arse! She's a fucking psychopath." Marinette ripped clothing from her clothing hangers, throwing it on before heading for the door. She knew she looked shit and to be honest she couldn't give a badger's arse.
An hour later she was standing in the hallway at 'Honeypot Incorporated.' face-to-face with Vivica fucking Agreste! They stood facing off in the hallway, neither speaking and for once Marinette was happy Vivica was playing by the rules. Peyton's door opened and her boss stood there looking as worked up as she felt. Thank the kwami's for that. Maybe if she decided to pull the cheap, crappy extensions out of Vivica's hair Peyton would be a lovely, supportive boss and just look the other way.
Vivica stormed in first, practically pushing Peyton out the way as she walked to a chair and settled into it.
"What the fuck are you two waiting for? I haven't got all day."
Peyton scurried over to her side of the desk as Marinette closed the door behind her. The woman was riled up, and after the media attention this morning she wasn't shocked.
"What's wrong, M. Agreste?" Marinette asked sweetly, sitting in the chair beside Vivica's. "Had a bad morning?" Marinette knew she was being a bitch, but she also knew the lying cow deserved it.
Vivica's stare burned through Marinette, but she held her ground. She was Ladybug! She was a strong, powerful woman.
"Don't play coy with me! I know you know, everyone in Paris knows."
"Knows what?" Marinette asked innocently, fluttering her eyelashes at Vivica before looking at Peyton as though searching for the answers.
"Listen, Marinette, I'm not in the mood for this act of yours. I seem to have been transported to public enemy number one this morning so you need to double your efforts to help me get out of this." She turned to look at Peyton, "I'm doubling my offer and extending the contract."
"You can't do that!" Marinette stood up and looked over at the woman sitting next to her, a woman who she hated with as much unadulterated loathing as she did Lila.
"I can and I will! Did you not read the small print of your contract because it clearly states I can change the duration at any time, plus I'm paying you more. Who would say no to that?"
She would! "He's not going to cheat on you Vivica. He's not that kind of guy!"
The model let out a puff of air and looked at Peyton. "My husband was undressing your little toy here with his eyes last night," she then turned her attention onto Marinette, "and I know that you've managed to get a part time job working as his dresser on set so I know you can do this. I must say Marinette, I'm actually impressed by your efforts to seduce him. You looked absolutely fuckable last night and I know given a chance alone he would have gone for you. It was my fault for being there that it didn't work, so I apologise and I will leave you to your job in the future."
Marinette looked between Peyton and Vivica, was the woman actually praising her? She was doing everything in her power to befriend Adrien and stop him from getting caught up in this convoluted plan, yet she was being congratulated on a good job? Peyton shrugged, obviously as confused as Marinette.
Vivica was obviously done, as she stood up and began to walk out the door. "Have a nice time in Argentina," she smirked, giving Marinette a look over from top to bottom, before turning back to the door. Before leaving she turned around one last time. "Oh, and Marinette. Maybe you should consider acting as an additional career. The looks you were giving my husband last night were really impressive, if I didn't know any better I'd think you were falling in love with him."
Marinette felt herself pale, watching in a trance as Vivica left the room and closed the door firmly behind her. Swiftly, she turned to face her boss, a look of disbelief on Peyton's face. Marinette launched forwards and placed her hands on the table in front of Peyton, her mind whirling, trying to stabilise itself to focus on the conversation she would need to have. One of the clear rules of trapping was not to fall for your trap and Vivica had just well and truly threw her under the bus.
"I swear I'm not - I didn't - I mean ..."
Peyton reached forward, placing one hand over Marinette's as she spoke. "I'm cancelling your contract with Honeypot." Her voice was sweet and tender, but the intention was clear. There would be no discussion.
"But - I swear, nothing has happened, I haven't - he hasn't - we -" Peyton held a hand up stopping Marinette's rambling, "you will work to the end of the contract with Vivica and then you will be terminated from the company."
Marinette felt her body grow cold, she'd never been fired in her life and she was good at this job. So, so good! They couldn't just let her go, if she was going to leave she wanted it to be her choice.
"It's time you had a chance to love Marinette," Peyton removed her hands from Marinette's before pulling out a newspaper which had documented the excitement from the previous night. She opened it to the page of the T-Birds and Pink Ladies before placing it again on the desk facing her. "Don't pass up the opportunity."
Marinette looked down at the picture, and what she didn't notice from the 'Mode Mania' article that morning was the look Adrien was giving her. One that brought tears to her eyes and sorrow to her heart. How could anyone look at her like this? She didn't deserve it, and she definitely didn't deserve him.
He'd find out what she'd done and leave her, and her heart would break from Adrien Agreste once more.
