Remedy Run

Late January

Sherlock had barely gotten home from the Yard when he got an off feeling. He stepped into the flat and hesitated as he determined the source of his uneasiness.

Where's Adelaide?

He knew she had gotten home about an hour before, and usually she would be working at the desk or playing with Teddy. Neither were in the living room or kitchen, from what he could observe. 221B was uncommonly silent, and being as Adelaide was just past nine weeks pregnant and had been experiencing more fainting episodes, Sherlock was on high alert in case she'd passed out and injured herself.

The detective paced into the bedroom and exhaled with relief when he found his wife laying down in the bed, evidently awake despite her closed eyes. Teddy was curled up, dozing in his crate.

Sherlock noted that Adelaide looked uncomfortable and asked gently, "Are you feeling ill, Love?" Adelaide, who had tucked herself into a ball on her left side, grunted weakly. Sherlock frowned and walked to her side of the bed, sitting down on the edge. As he did she opened her eyes. He reached out and stroked her cheek, "Are you feeling sick, Adelaide?"

She nodded stiffly, "Y-Yeah... I've been nauseous all day and it got worse when I came home..."

"Why didn't you tell me? You promised you would tell me if you started having new symptoms. I could've dropped by the Museum with a few things to help."

"I'm sorry, Sherlock... I thought the nausea would go away on its own, and when it didn't, I didn't have time to text you."

"It's alright, Love, don't worry about it now," He soothed and then sighed, "I was hoping you wouldn't get the nausea too. But it does indicate that the baby is likely developing well since your hCG level is at least where it should be. A few more weeks and it should pass though."

Adelaide moaned, "As comforting as that info should be, I don't really feel like going into depth about why I'm getting sick."

"I'm sorry, Angel. Would you like me to get you anything to help with the nausea?" He inquired softly while slowly stroking down her side, giving her time to respond. While she thought about his offer, he addressed his current internal conflict.

He felt torn because on the one hand, he was revelling in the science behind Adelaide's symptoms. Seeking to observe and understand such changes was in his nature- the science excited him as always. Part of him wanted to try and perform his own experiments to validate the research he had found.

The other part was trying to understand and sympathize with Adelaide, from the perspective of a husband and father-to-be rather than a scientist. It unsettled him how challenging it was to prioritise that side over his natural scientist side.

Adelaide finally answered and he switched his attention back to her, "If you wouldn't mind going to pick up a few things... I just don't know what would work."

Sherlock nodded a bit, "I'll bring back a few different remedies, then. You need to be able to keep at least something small down, as I deduce you haven't had enough since breakfast."

"Okay.. Take Teddy with you? I tried to walk him when I got home..."

"Of course, Love," He leaned down and pressed a kiss to her cheek, "I'll be as quick as I can, Adelaide. In the meantime, stay here and rest."

"Alright. Thank you, Darling."

"No problem, Angel."

He got Teddy up and ready with ease. He left Adelaide another kiss and then left for the shops, pulling up sites with suggestions on food items to help quell the infamous pregnancy nausea. He also texted Mary, since she'd had morning sickness both with Rosie and their soon to arrive baby boy, asking her for suggestions as well.

Unable to choose "just a few", he ended up with two fully loaded bags of different foods and beverages. Teddy tried several times to get at the contents, but Sherlock was used to his hunger-driven curiosity and kept them just out of reach as they started back home. He texted Adelaide to let her know they were inbound and decided to take a slightly longer route when he sensed media presence down a couple blocks.

Sherlock got so caught up in his thoughts that he strayed onto a crime scene before he could detour. Greg saw him of course and hurried over, "Oi, Sherlock, it's a good thing you're here! I've got a triple homicide. Could you spare a few minutes?"

Sherlock almost answered an immediate yes until he remembered Adelaide's needs. Greg was still in the dark about the pregnancy, and he didn't want to reveal it so openly, especially with Sally Donovan in earshot.

Sherlock lowered his voice and stepped a little closer, "I'm sure your officers can handle this case."

"It's a level nine, Sherlock."

Of course it had to be level nine.

"I must get home, Greg. Bring me the evidence files tomorrow if you must." The DI paused upon hearing his actual name. Sherlock never used it unless there was something serious going on.

Greg nodded, "Alright, Sherlock. I'll bring it all over tomorrow."

"Thank you, Glenn."

After a curt farewell, Sherlock redirected Teddy's focus and resumed the walk back to 221B, deliberately avoiding as many officers as possible. He knew Donovan had watched him and Greg conversing and hoped she didn't get any bright ideas.

When he and Teddy finally walked into 221B, Sherlock made sure to feed and water him and store the food items properly before hurrying into the bedroom to check on Adelaide, pushing his encounter with the Yard to the back of his mind. There's no way anyone else could figure it out so quickly.
