I stared out my window ignoring my studies. The beach bellow my castle had always intrigued me, and I found myself looking at often. I loved the way the waves gently moved over the bright sand, and the way the sea birds would fly around together. I remembered the stories my mother would tell me about the creatures that lived in the ocean. She'd tell me anything from sharks to dolphins to mermaids.

She would described mermaids and their male counterparts as the most stunning creatures in the kingdom. As a child, my wish was to marry a merperson. It was a silly innocent dream I'd write a about in my journals. Although, nowadays I would have written about wanting to wed a merman specifically. But that mindset was just another silly dream.

"Alright, that's your studying done for today, we'll continue same time tomorrow." My tutor informed, standing to leave.

I simply nodded and looked back out the window. Feeling nostalgic, I went the drawers next to my bed and found my old journals. I opened one up to random page and read over my messy writing. Apparently I'd had the same unusual mindset as a child, as all of the pages mentioned specifically mermen. I laughed at myself and laid back on the bed.

After sighing, I stood back up and looked out the window yet again. This time I was almost pressing my face on the glass in shock. At first, it looked like a large fish had washed up, but half of that fish was a pale human. My window was one of the few that faced the see, so I hurriedly grabbed my cape and rushed down the stairs. I yelled out an excuse and said I might be late for dinner as I left the castle.

As quick as my legs would take me, I made my way down the beach. As I neared the sand I removed my shoes and placed them on the grass. The sand felt familiar on my feet as I walked. Nearing what had to be a merperson, I hesitated.

"Hello?" I called out, creeping forwards slightly.

The creature in front of me shifted slightly. It was face down in the sand, but now it rested on its elbows, looking up at me. His firey hair had a few bits of seaweed drapped across it, sand stuck to his pale chest and flushed cheeks and his emerald green tail shined brightly from the fleeting sun.

"Are you alright?" I asked, crouching down, somehow managing not to verbalize my immediate thought of 'gorgeous'.

"Oh, uh, yeah." He looked up at me confused, then around him, "Just, uh..."

He stopped talking as tears began lining his cute face. I kneeled in the sand, not worried how it would damage my clothes, and placed a gentle hand on his shoulder.

"S-sorry..!" He managed between sobs, "I just ran away and I guess... I got a bit lost."

"It seems so." I said, still stunned by him, "Can I help you at all?"

"I- I dunno." He stopped crying, and moved himself to be sitting, with his tail tucked to the side of him, "...I don't think anyone can anymore."

"Please, I'd like to do something." I said and he looked up at me, "Anything."

He looked at me with dark eyes and then his expression turned painful as he looked at the ocean. He shook his head and faced me again.

"I can't go back. They'll look for me." He grabbed the front of my shirt, "...There's nothing left in this world for me. Please, just let me dry up here."

I moved closer to him and placed a hand on his cheek, "I can not do that unfortunately. Even if I did someone would find you, use you for money in some way. Please, let me help you. If you can not go back, let me take you someplace new."

His eyes sparkled as he nodded slowly. Carefully, I placed my arm on his back under his shoulders and the other under his tail. He wrapped his arms around my neck tightly as I headed for the castle. I couldn't go through the main door, so I went to the back. I guessed it was dinner time and knew there'd be no one in the back passage that led to my room.

The merman looked around inquisitively, eyes wide with amazement.

"By the way, you can call me Adam." I said, kicking the door to my room opened with my foot and closing it the same way.

"Oh, I'm Kai." He said, finally smiling.

I kicked open the door to my bathroom and placed Kai in the big tub. I turned the taps on a let the water fill.

"Ah, that feels nice..." Kai said with a sigh as the water reached him, slowly filling up the space. He leaned back with closed eyes and sighed. After turning the water off, I looked over Kai. God, he was handsome.

"Are you hungry?" I asked, unsure of what he ate.

"Oh, yes!" His eyes sparkled again, "Could I try some human food? I've always wanted too!"

I couldn't help the small laugh that escaped my lips, making him blush, "Sure, I'll bring you some of my favourite food."

I ruffled his surprisingly soft hair and left the bathroom, closing the door in case anyone entered my room. I left the kitchen with an arm full of different treats and snacks, avoiding anything with fish just in case.

When I returned to my room, I noticed Kai had managed to reach the shampoo and conditioner and made bubbles in the tub. I smiled as I pulled in a small table with the food on it.

"Wow!" He quickly moved the side of the tub, splashing bits of water, "There's so much!!"

"I wasn't sure what you would like so I grabbed heaps." I said, sitting on the tile floor opposite Kai and the table.

He looked over at me with a smile. It was refreshing compared to the grim faces of the maids and butlers.

"...Thanks." Kai muttered while blushing and looking over all the food, "No one's ever done some thing like this for me."

"Hey, it's no trouble." I said, "Plus, who'd give up the opportunity to spoil a cute guy like you."

I winked and his entire face turned pink. He quickly retreated under the water. I just laughed and grabbed a bread roll, eating it quickly.
