This imagine was requested by the_hobbit_lover : Imagine that you, somehow, get transported to Middle-Earth. There is just one tiny problem... English is not your native language and you don't understand a thing they say.
One moment you were walking towards your favorite flowershop and the next you were falling down from the sky. You were kicking and screaming as you saw the ground coming closer with every second that passed. The wind felt ice cold against your skin. Many thoughts passed your mind as you headed head first to your certain death. 'Alstublieft God, we zijn het niet altijd eens geweest maar kunt u me alstublieft laten leven?'*
But that prayer wasn't neccessary. Because below you, there was a wizard with a plan of his own. And a few dwarves who had seen you coming and were now preparing to catch you. A hobbit was nervously pacing around, looking up every now and then. He quickly went back to pacing when he remembered what could happen to you if hit the ground. That wouldn't be a pretty sight.
'Get ready!' Dwalin growled. You were really close now. The dwarves braced themselves. However, no one imagined the impact to be that fierce. They did catch you but the impact all send them to the ground. There were a few complaints, some groans but general happiness because the 'lass from the sky' hadn't died. You were already grateful you hadn't died.
Hurriedly, you got up. For a moment you felt quite dizzy but you ignored that. You had landed on a group of small, strange man. It wasn't polite to keep laying on them when they had just saved you. 'Ik ben jullie zo dankbaar, zonder jullie was ik nu dood geweest. Ik bedank jullie uit de grond van mijn hart'* you said.
The dwarves got themselves up from the ground. One small man, you thought he was the youngest, looked puzzled at you. What was wrong? 'Can't she speak English?' Kili asked his brother. Fili shrugged. Balin came up closer to you. He noticed that you wore odd clothing. Nothing like he had seen before. Maybe you came from an unknown land in the far east?
He bowed before you, which made you giggle. They were funny little lads, weren't they? 'Can you repeat that in English, my dear? I am sorry to say we don't speak your language' he said. He looked up at you with expecting eyes. While you could only look back with confusion. This couldn't be true... The one language you had never understood and of course that was the only language in which these man spoke.
'Het spijt me maar ik kan geen Engels. Het was, zeg maar, niet mijn sterkste punt op school.' You tried to smile at all of them but you did notice that some of the older ones were now whispering to each other. They didn't look too friendly also. You couldn't help it that you didn't speak English.
'I don't think the lass speaks English' Balin concluded. Thorin was eyeing you up and down with a suspicous glare. 'I thought all humans spoke Westron' Dwalin growled. They all sounded so angry. You took a few steps back. Now that you really looked at them you could see that they didn't look like humans. They were too small. And a tad too hairy.
'Don't be a fool!' an angry voice echoed trough the valley. You complety froze this time. You had landed in a wicked world that much was clear to you. A tall man dressed in grey and a pointy hat, holding a... a stick...?.... came your way. He seemed to be pretty angry. Why was everyone angry at you while you didn''t put yourself in this situation?
'I made her come here from her own world.' He stopped in front of you, leaning on his stick. 'I might have just forgotten one small detail' he said while looking at you. Now you felt like they wanted to eat you. 'Weet je, ik smaak echt niet goed. Dus als jullie me gewoon laten gaan kunnen jullie iets vangen dat wel lekker is'* you said, slowly walking away from the Company.
'Wees niet bang. Ze zullen je niks doen. We hebben je nodig op onze expeditie naar de Eenzame Berg'* Gandalf said in your own tongue. For a moment you were confused. Just like the dwarves and Bilbo. Thorin charged forward, wanting to hear every little detail of this frustrating new fact. 'Why did you bring that girl here? She will be nothing but a nuisance!' he growled.
'And how can you speak that weird language of hers?' Nori shouted. Gandalf sighed heavily. He would need to take a break from the dwarves soon. He could only handle so much stupidity before a wizard had enough. He knelt down on his knees so he was almost eye to eye with Thorin.'If I say you need her on this quest then trust me and take her with you.'
Thorin looked past the wizard to look at you. You were fidgeting with one of the buttons on your clothing. 'How can she be of any help when we can't understand what the other is saying?' Thorin hissed. Apparently it was all pretty obvious to the wizard. Yet, to Thorin and the other dwarves it made no sense.
You cleared your throat hesitantly. They had been talking about you. You didn't need to speak their tongue to be able to make that out. Everyone turned their head towards you. 'Ik weet niet waarom jullie daarheen gaan maar ik zal mijn best doen om te helpen. Ik kan niet koken, niet vechten, niet naaien of iets dergelijks... maar ik ben wel goed in puzzels en raadsels oplossen.'
Thorin didn't understand a word you just said, like Gandalf did, but he did see the braveness in your eyes. That was the thing that persuaded him the most to take you along with the Company. When Gandalf had translated most of what you just said (only the bits that were useful to him) the dwarves all grunted that it was nice to have a lass who could cook.
Some of them smiled at you and patted you on the back. You sighed in relief. These strange man had accepted you. Did this mean you could come along with them? 'Vonden ze het niet erg dat ik niet kan koken?' you asked Gandalf. He smiled at you. 'Nee, dat vonden ze helemaal niet erg.'
Fili and Kili closed the line behind you. They wanted to keep their new lass save. 'I can't wait to taste her cooking. I bet she is great at it' Kili said. You turned around and was greeted with two smiling brothers. 'I think so too Kee.'
