Through the letters of my heart #3
You are finally done with all my crazy observations in the movies. So, we continue on with our two stories. The first one will be the next chapter for our sexy grumpy teacher.
Last time in 'Our sexy but grumpy fellow teacher';
Thorin looked up with a small smile. "Don't worry, you did a great job. It was surprising but not something I hadn't expected" he started. He leaned back in his chair a little, and looked at you with curious eyes.
"What do you mean?" you asked.
"From the little conversation we have had I gathered that you have a different point of view on the role of a teacher. And it showed in your class today." He was silent for a minute. "Your class does respect you, they listen to you and they learned a lot this way."
Your body was now positively on fire. Maybe he would know why it felt that way, he was the biology teacher.
"Why did you decide to let them teach your subject of the week before you do it yourself?"
You swallowed thickly. "Well, I thought it would get them to read into the subject before hand. I am hoping that this way they will see what benefits it has to read through the chapters before a lesson starts. The first period may be the best to show that to them."
"Hmm, do you think they will start doing that?" At your questioning look he re-phrased. "Do you think they will start preparing for your class from next period onwards?"
You shook your head. "Most of them won't, I bet. The least I can do is show them another way to which they are used. I feel like that is my job as a teacher."
"Then I have everything I need, miss Reynales." Thorin gathered his sheets. "The principal will receive a positive report from me. Have a good day." And he left.
It all happened so quickly that you had no time to register his words. Was this it? You had been worried during the whole class for this? Just a few questions and he was done?
"Miss Reynales? Can we come in already?" a student from the new class asked.
"Yes! Please, come in!"

"Welcome class, today you are going to learn about evolution. I want to see your textbooks on the table." Thorin turned towards his chalkboard to write down the notes for his students.
Whispers arose from behind his back when instead of the normal notes, the piece of chalk hung still in the air. Normally they would have to write fast to keep up with their teacher. When you weren't up to speed it meant that you wouldn't get all the notes during that lesson.
Thorin sighed and put the chalk down.
It was put down on his desk and he looked up at the students in front of him. "What comes to mind when you hear the word 'evolution'?" he asked.
Several students exchanged confused looks.
The room was so silent that you could hear the clock ticking in the hallway. Instead of glaring or loosing his temper, Thorin did something else. "It doesn't matter what you think of. What is the first thing that comes to your mind?"
A girl in the back of the class hesitantly raised her hand. The boy sitting next to her put his book up so Thorin wouldn't see him.
"Yes" Thorin said, nodding to tell her she could talk.
"I-I think... maybe, Darwin?"
"Very good. What do you know about Darwin?"
The girl' cheeks glowed with a dark shade of pink. She looked down at her book. "I thought it had something to do with selection?" she asked.
Thorin nodded. "That is right, natural selection. What else comes to mind when you hear the word 'evolution'?"
Another student raised his hand. "Evolution is when all the animals get their traits from their parents" he tried.
"It does have something to do with the traits that are passed on from our parents, you got that part right. But you are forgetting something" Thorin said. "Can someone make it a little more specific?"
Hands started to shoot up left and right now.
"Katie, what do you think?" Thorin asked a girl in front of his class.
She smiled. "We all get our traits from our parents and those traits partly decide whether we survive or not" she answered.
The boy behind her waved his hand so that Thorin would notice him. "Yes Luke?"
"Not just traits are passed on but also the shape of a bird' beak or the colors of frogs" he explained.
A small smile appeared on Thorin' lips. "That is very good. You are correct. When we talk about evolution, Darwin specifically, we first look at natural selection. Like Luke and Katie just said, our appearance and traits have something to do with whether we survive in the wild or not."
He bent down to look in his bag. "There should be something in here... Aha!" He stood up, holding a few cardboard cut-outs in his hands. "Here I have some pictures of different colored animals" he explained as he held the first two up.
The first picture showed a light green frog sitting on the shore of a river. "How many frogs are in this picture?"
Some of the students bent forward to look for the hidden frog.
"There! Behind the stone!" one of them said when he finally spotted it.
Instead of reprimanding the student for not waiting his turn, Thorin smiles. "Very good. This is a great example for our lesson. Which frog is most likely to surive; the one who blends in with his environment or the one with the brigther colors?"
"The one with the brighter colors will stand out more" a girl named Lucy offered.
Thorin turned his attention to her. "And what does that mean?"
"I don't know."
Thorin smiled to encourage her. "I'm sure you do. If you were a bird looking for your meal, which one would you notice first?"
Other students raised their hands to answer it for her. But Thorin gave her the time to think.
"I... would I go for the brightly colored one because I would notice it's color?"
"Very good Lucy. You would indeed go for the brightly colored one. So that one probably won't have a chance to breed and to pass it's color on. While the one with the colors that blend in well with it's environment will get that chance."
He put the large pictures down. "Maybe, in time, the light green colored frogs will have disappeared from this river because they didn't get a chance to breed. And then the food for the birds will be harder to find."
Thorin held up another picture. This one showed a bird with a long beak.
"This bird has a long beak which helps it to reach the caterpillars that hide in holes in the trees. Birds that are born with smaller or wider beaks won't be able to reach their food. They will go looking for other food or will die."
Katie raised her hand. "Does natural selection have something to do with humans too?"
"That is a great question Katie."
Katie glowed with pride. More students were raising their hands, trying to impress their teacher.
Thorin thought about a good example. "You can look at it this way when it comes down to humans; we don't like to think that we are a part of natural selection as well.
We feel the need to protect each other while you can argue that it is just nature playing it's part. It is a sensitive subject because we consider it rude to think that way. For example;
If you were to star in 'The Walking Dead', would you prefer to have someone in your team that you have to carry all the way due to a physical disability or someone who can run?
To make others, and ourselves, feel better we would like to say that we wouldn't leave the first person behind. But if a zombie outbreak would occur, all of us would probably choose to leave the physically disable behind.
Some would stay behind to protect them but their number would be few. Our instinct tells us that we have a better survival chance if we leave them behind. Maybe those people are going to survive.
They will probably teach their children the same principles they have. And if they have passed the same traits/personality on to them, maybe they will make the same decisions. It is perhaps something we don't want to think about but interesting to do anyway" Thorin concluded.
*TRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR*
Both students and Thorin looked up in shock to hear the school bell ringing.
"Well, we covered evolution today. I think we made some good progress. You are free to leave" Thorin announced. He put the picture of the bird away in his bag.
"Mister Oakenshield?"
"Yes, Maggie?" Thorin was surprised to see only a few of his students had left the classroom. He sat down on his chair.
Maggie looked behind her, several students nodded to encourage her. "Well, we were thinking, since miss Reynales teaches religion and you teach biology, that maybe you can teach a class together one time?"
Thorin's brow furrowed. "I don't see what religion and biology have in common."
"You see... that is a great question." Maggie turned to Luke for help.
"Darwin' believes on evolution aren't populair with some religious groups, right mister Oakenshield?"
"That is correct."
"And we were thinking that, maybe, we could practice on our debating skills. Like, we stand up for Darwin' theory and the class of miss Reynales defends the religious point of view" Luke explained.
"Miss Reynales and I would have to spend some time preparing that extra lesson" Thorin said, thinking out loud.
Luke and Maggie smiled brightly. "Exactly! Spend as much time with miss Reynales as you need! She is in the library right now" Maggie exclaimed.
Luke quickly put a hand on her mouth. "What we mean to say is that we understand the extra lesson will need some planning. There is no rush, take all the time you need."
"Maybe you can talk it over in that little bakery across the street? They have the best muffins and tea there" Katie joined in.
Thorin hummed in agreement. "Miss Reynales does love blueberry muffins and tea..." he murmured.
The three students waited anxiously for their teacher' answer.
"I will discuss it with her. You said she was in the library?"
"Yes, she said something about preparing her next class. Though I think that she was talking about a class for another day" Luke said.
Thorin got up from his chair to rush his last students out the door. "You are probably correct. I'll see you next time, which is two days from now."
"Have a good day mister Oakenshield! And don't forget the bakery across the street" Katie shouted before running down the hallway with the others.
The door to the classroom got locked and Thorin rushed down the hall to the library. He didn't want to miss the opportunity to tell you about the debate idea. How his students came up with it, he wasn't sure, but it was a good one.
When he finally arrived in the library he was disappointed to see you didn't sit in your usual place. During the few short weeks you had been working at the school, you had developed a habbit of spending your breaks together.
At first you had sat with the other teacher' at the teacher' lounge. After a while Thorin noticed that you came to the library first.
Somehow it felt different when you didn't share your break together.
Thorin would sit and wait for you to arrive while 'reading his book'. He read significantly less now that he met you.
He couldn't find himself to care too much though.
The best feeling was when he arrived late in the library and he would find you waiting for him. Sometimes you talked about books, sometimes you read in silence and at other times you went outside for a walk.
He had never taken the time to get to know the other teachers. Now he found himself wanting to find out everything there was to know about you.
His shoulders sank when he didn't see you waiting for him. "Has miss Reynales left the library already?" he asked the librarian.
She smiled kindly at him as she put a book away on a shelf. "I last saw (y/n) at the fantasy section."
"Thank you" Thorin said before rushing off.
The librarian chuckled watching the usually gruff teacher eagerly rush to the fantasy section in the library. Hopefully the students had done their job already. She would have to prepare her library for the joined lesson soon.
