Through the letters of my heart #1

This is another little thing that I have been working on for a while. I came up with this idea and sherhobbit helped me through rp (roleplay). Which she is absolutely awesome at.

And we did that a few months back. I can't tell you exactly when we did it but anyway, that is not important. Sometimes it helps to talk about your story to someone. Just so you can see how someone responds to it.

Maybe there are some things that can be improved. And sometimes there are situations you hadn't thought of yourself.

This first chapter is heavily based on the rp we did. If enough of you like this then I will definitely add more chapters to it.

Don't worry, it won't interfere with the baby story. If anything it might create quicker updates. Because before I was worried about publishing too much about that story. So I filled it up with imagines.

With another story I can do one chapter babys, one chapter this, one chapter babyes, etc. Let me know what you think of this story!

I didn't copy the rp we did but made it into a story. And changed a few things here and there. Not much :P

By the way, your last name is now, euhm.... let's call you... Reynales. That is what the randomizer has decided and you will roll with it!

"...so, to sum it all up; Plants are living things that can make their own food using photosynthesis, they reproduce but they can't move around. And animals are living things that can move around, eat food for fuel and reproduce. Is that clear to you all?"

Thorin looks around the room and is met with terrified eyes. Some don't even look at him. He sighs. "Why is no one writing this down while you have a test coming up in seven weeks?"

Notebooks are hurriedly opened and the scratching of pens begin.

The teacher shakes his head. Even after all these years he still has to remind the young people that they need to take notes. And people are wondering why this country is going to ruin.

Several students look up when someone knocks on the door.

"Continue working" Thorin says sternly. "Come in."

The door slowly opens. Two terrified freshman stand in the doorway. One of them is hiding behind the taller one of the two, his legs are shaking. "M-mister Oakenshield? Miss Reynales asked us if we could pick up some chalk because she is out."

"S-so, here we are" the other one whispers from behind the other students' back.

Thorin puts his book down, taking his time and adding chills to the already scared students. "And miss Reynales deemed herself above such tasks as fetching pencils?" he asks.

The first student swallows. "It is just that... she is new mister Oakenshield. She just started today and didn't know where we store the chalk he-"

"I didn't know new teachers came without legs" Thorin interupts.

"W-well, you see, she didn't really know where to go so we offered to pick it up for her" the student explains.

"You brave little soldier" someone in Thorin's class whispers in awe. No one dares to look up at the teacher as he glares towards his students.

"You can tell miss Reynales that she can pick it up herself. That is, if she isn't incapable of walking on her own two legs. Otherwise I will have to assume that our new teacher is a plant and not a human being." Thorin felt quite proud of himself for that one.

The students nodded. They left in a hurry, remembering to close the door behind them.

"Ten more minutes and you are free to go. Until then, the only sound I hear is the one of hard working students. Am I clear?"

"Yes mister Oakenshield!" the students answered rapidly.

Thorin spins a pencil between his fingers as his mind drifts off. Just two more classes and then he has the rest of the day off. No more students asking him dumb questions to which they already should know the answer.

Sometimes he wonders what their parents are thinking. It is a part of their job to make sure their children land on their feet. Not letting them keep their wings so they can live with mommy and daddy for the rest of their lives.

And then they complain that the children never leave the family home.

It is all the fault of the system. Like it always is when people don't take responsibility over their own choices.

Five more minutes and the new monkeys will come in. He can't wait.

Without a warning though, the door is opened. Another disturbance in his class. "What do you think-"

"And I have to assume that all older teachers here act like stick up jerks over a piece of chalk? Or is that just you?" you ask, leaning against the doorway with your arms crossed.

Pencils drop to the floor and audible gasps fill the room. The two teachers just stare at each other. One with a determination that the other didn't think the other would have. And the second teacher isn't quite sure what to say.

"I see you have legs" he says.

"I see you don't actually have a tail and red skin" you counter.

Some of the students risk it and focus on the two teachers instead of their work. Thorin is too busy figuring out if this is the rude teacher or an older student who just decided to show up.

"Why would I have red skin?" Thorin asks.

"Word has it that you are the devil in disguise" you answer casually. "Can I borrow some chalk from you or has that evaporated by now?"

Thorin has to count to ten before he can answer. These new teachers should have some more respect for the teachers who work here a lot longer than them. Their age difference, he guesses, isn't that big so maybe that is why she acts this way.

He walks towards his desk to open his drawer. All the while he doesn't take his eyes off of you. Maybe you will give his students a sign and they will start acting the same way.

He won't take the risk.

"Here you go" he says. You hold up your hand for him to drop the chalk in. Thorin, however, has another plan. He closes his hand around yours and pulls you a little closer. "Watch your boundaries miss Reynales. They may be closer than you'd like to think" he whispers.

You smile warmly at him. "And you should re-locate your boundaries mister Oakenshield. Maybe you will find your new ones more pleasant."

He lets go of your hand.

"That wasn't so hard, now was it?" You turn around waving the class goodbye. "Good luck with him!" The door closes behind you.

Some students chuckle at your boldness.

Thorin doesn't chastise them immediately. There is a small smile playing on his lips as he watches the new teacher leave his room.

It takes the annoying sound of the schoolbell to get him out of his daze.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The last two classes of his day are over. The last bell finally rings and he can say goodbye to the building for a day.
Thorin gathers his stuff and places it in his briefcase. He grabs his coffee, his favorite book of Tolkien and heads for his favorite place. It is a place that is hidden from view. One that nobody can disturb him at.
He does love his job, don't make that mistake. Sometimes he just doesn't understand the youth of this country. When he was young, you practically had to tear him away from his books.
Now it seemed that all they wanted to do was make 'selfies' and see who wore the cuter outfit.
Maybe that had been the case when he was young too. He just wasn't around to experience that. Books and studying were the only things he did during his childhood. His father thought it was more important than to have fun.
And now Thorin didn't see the fun in it all. If his students would work harder they would accomplish more. Why didn't they see that?
Perhaps that was the reason why he chose to become a teacher.
His father wanted him to take over the family business. There had been some words about the subject between them. But then his brother, Frerin, told their father he was interested in taking over. All was good now.
Though his father was good at holding a grudge, he did forgive his eldest son. Eventually.
Thorin never regretted his decision. Not even when new teachers made their way in and appeared to be more dull than the students they were teaching. Sometimes they stayed but most of the time they went on their way after one month.
Ereborean High was one of the smaller schools in the region. New teachers were often offered new jobs or went looking for them themselves.
He crossed the path behind the school that would lead him to his favorite reading spot.
Further prove that he did love his job. He liked to linger and just do his own thing around the school. Once classes were over he would revel in the solitude that the small school offered.
The grounds of the school were surrounded by trees. Many townsfolk used it as a local park instead of school terrain. No one bothered the other so the school let them.
A little further away from the buzzing school square there was a small lake with weeping-willows surrounding it. They offered enough shadow in the burning summer sun and enough protection in the cool autumn wind.
It was one of the farthest trees at the end of the path that was Thorin's special spot. He couldn't remember how many stories he had read there. How many different lives he had lead.
Sometimes he wondered that when he forgot what he was going to say, that it was just the author backspacing. It happened from time to time. He knew that he wasn't in a story but what would he do if he was? Would he re-write his life?
All of his students knew where his reading spot was so they went out of their way to avoid the place.
He was known to be the scary teacher. Thorin liked that. It meant that he was the teacher offering the most discipline. After all, the grades in his class were the highest of the whole school.
A producer had even asked him to write the new study book for biology. Next year his name would be known throughout the whole country.
And still he would stay with this small school. No matter what offer he would receive.
Thorin was about to throw his briefcase on the ground when he noticed there was already laying one. "I'm sorry I didn't know this spot was taken" he said, already turning around with a frown.
"No, don't go. The students told me not to go here because it is your spot. And, well, I wanted to tell you that I love these trees. And reading, that is." You took a deep breath to get your thoughts in order. "I just wanted to apologize for my behaviour in your class."
He looked at you from over his shoulder. Thorin turned around, with his jacket lying over his arm that was holding his briefcase.
"I didn't want the students to see that I have no clue what I am doing so I acted tough. Not the best strategy to go with, I know. But the whole morning was a mess." You sat down, pulling your knees up to your chest. "It is calm here" you said to change the subject.
Thorin found that the smile returned to his face. He put his briefcase down, wrapping his jacket around your shoulders.
"Thank you" you said.
He sat down beside you, looking at the sun that still made the water sparkle. Even when the leaves were already turning brown and the days were shorter.
"Tell me about your morning" he said out of the blue.
You looked up at him, confused. His eyes were still glued on the water. "You don't want to hear about my morning."
Thorin cocked an eyebrow, looking at you from the side. "I wouldn't ask if I didn't want to find out the answer."
You laughed softly. "That is true." Not sure where to begin your story, you picked up some stones that lay close to you and threw them in the water.
He nudged your shoulder. "Well?"
The last stone descended to the bottom of the lake. "I was told that there was going to be someone here this morning that would show me around. But, guess what, there wasn't. So I had to ask the students where I could find the teachers' room."
Thorin nodded for you to continue.
"When I finally found the right room, my first class had already left. I was lucky enough to have the same room for the entire day so I didn't have to go on another search."
Thorin hummed. "You will have that room for the rest of your career. Should save you some time tomorrow morning."
You looked at him, trying to figure out if he was trying to make you feel better with a joke or being plain serious. "Anyway, after that I felt awkward to just walk in to the teachers room so I figured I would go outside to find a quiet place."
You gestured around you. "And I found it here."
"That doesn't explain everything" Thorin said calmly. He leaned back against the tree, placing his closed book on his stomache.
"What do you mean?"
He looked at you from his lower position. "The way you stormed into my classroom, telling me I was the devil in disguise?" If you knew Thorin longer, you would hear the teasing sound in his voice. But he forgot you didn't know him that long.
Your cheeks heated up and you looked away. "I-I... I am so sorry about that." You sighed heavily. "I was already angry because I felt like a complete idiot. I just had enough" you ended in a whisper.
He felt guilty for asking so bluntly. "I have to admit that it is the first time a new teacher talked back to me. Maybe I should get used to it." Thinking about it, he realized this was the first time he had an actual conversation with another teacher.
Ducks were busy talking to each other on the other side of the lake. They quacked and quacked like it was the last day they could do so.
"I could show you around."
Your head shot up. "Excuse me?"
Thorin shrugged, opening his book and grabbing his sandwiches. "I am off for the rest of the day. If you can stand being around the devil long enough to see the entire school, then I would be happy to do so." He took a bite.
You realized your mouth still hang open so you hurriedly shut it. "Are you sure?"
Thorin nodded. "Just give me some time to finish my lunch. I believe you still have to eat as well?"
You nodded.
He looked at you from behind his book. You could only see his eyes and the other parts of the upper half of his head. "Then maybe you should eat as well. I would hate to hear all the jokes after I have to carry you to the nurses' office because you fainted."
