"Thomas you know you are not allowed to do that!" You weren't counting but wasn't this the fifth time in one hour time that you had to tell him that? You shook your head as your brother once again tried to steal the ball of yarn from your cat.
The cat was still young and saw this as an invitation to play.
Soon your whole garden was decorated with the brightly colored yarn. It was everywhere. Literally everywhere.
You couldn't help but smile. Your brother and the cat were sitting under the apple tree, cuddling and playing to their heart' content. They didn't understand that this whole mess would have to be cleared up at some point.
"If you told us you wanted to re-decorate your garden, we would have helped." The dwarven prince stopped, standing beside you.
You shrugged. "You know you don't have to do anything for me."
He nodded only once. "And we already told you that you have done far too much for us. There must be something we can do, or give, to repay you for your kindness."
You looked down at the dwarf. You were only a few inches taller than him but still it felt like he was the taller one when he gave you thát look.
"It really was no trouble at all. You needed a place to rest and I had one to offer." You bend down to pick up the laundry basket. "Besides, you need all the money you still have to finish this journey. I would buy supplies if I were you."
Thorin followed behind and helped you to put the wet laundry on the clothing pole.
It felt oddly familair and safe when he was with you. Even such simple tasks as doing the laundry turned into something magical.
Ever since that day in the forest, where you almost killed each other thinking that they other was prey, you were spending a lot of time together. At first you thought that he did it out of guilt. Now you weren't so sure. He often looked at you when you were busy doing things. You would always find his eyes on you when he turned around.
"Mom! When are we going to have dinner?" Your brother ran over to you, holding onto your skirts.
You picked him up and carried him with one arm. "Are you hungry little one? I won't start dinner for a couple more hours. See inside if master Dwalin has left you any cookies. Maybe Thorin can-" But when you turned around, the dwarf was gone. Strange.
You put your brother back down and he rushed into the house. Where had Thorin gone?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He didn't explain to them why they were leaving without telling her goodbye. Because there was no good reason. Thorin couldn't face her. He just couldn't.
She had never mentioned a husband during their conversations. Not once.
There was no trace of a man that lived in her home. And yet the boy had called her 'mother'. Until then he had hoped that she took care of the boy for another reason, any reason other than him being her son.
Never had he heard her refer to him as her son. Maybe that was common among men.
He couldn't help how his heart beat for her. So he had to leave. Especially because it looked like you were enjoying all the attention that he was giving you.
Thorin didn't want to get caught up in a scandal. And neither did he want to hurt your good name. Everyone in town had been so nice about you. What would they say if you, a married woman, were interested in another man?
And maybe Thorin had been wrong. Maybe he hadn't truly seen you looking at him with blushing cheeks. Maybe it was all in his imagination.
So this was the right choice. He had to get away from you.
As far and as fast as possible.
None of the other dwarves said anything. If they were curious as to why they left their hosts' home, then they didn't share their curiosity with their leader. They knew better than that.
His nephews knew better than to ask him for his motives.
Everyone knew except for the hobbit.
"What is the reason, exactly, why we left the home of miss (y/n)? She said that we could stay for as long as wanted. Didn't you say that there was more work to do in town to enlarge our funds?" he asked.
Thorin sighed heavily. That was true. There was more than enough work for them in the village. And the money could have been handy on their quest.
But his heart came first in this situation. He wouldn't make it harder on himself then it needed to be.
Not now.
"Master dwarves! Master dwarves!"
The company stopped and turned around as one. The shape of a man could be seen waving at them from far away. It probably was one of the man from the village they had just left behind.
"Do we wait?" Dwalin asked.
Thorin nodded. There must be a reason as to why the man came running after them all that way. They left her town behind yesterday. It must be important.
The dwarves took their time to take a rest as they waited for the man to reach them. He halted in front of Thorin, trying to catch his breath. The dwarven prince patiently waited for him to do so.
"I-I am s-s-sorry that I... heh... that I made you stop, i-it's just that -" He wiped some of the sweat from his forehead. "Phew. That was a long road to run."
Dwalin rolled his eyes. "Spit it out man. We have a quest to get back to."
The man nodded. "I know all about your quest. We were just wondering if your wizard had a potion for us. But I see that he isn't here. Do you happen to have some potions to cure a strong fever?"
Thorin raised an eyebrow. "Don't you have doctors in your town that could make a potion like that?"
The man shook his head, no. "The doctor and his apprentice are on a scavenging hunt for a few herbs. We tried looking for them but we have no idea where they went." He pointed in the direction of the town. "And we are not sure for how long (y/n) will last if she doesn't-"
"(Y/N) is the one who is sick?" Thorin asked.
"Aye, that is what I said. Do you happen to have a potion for her then?"
Thorin pushed him out of the way. He lead his company back to your town. Oin tried to work on the right potion as they kept marching forward.
The distance that they had covered in one and a half day went by much faster now.
Thorin found that his feet were more eager to go back to the small town than they were to leave it. They were back in no time. He didn't waste any time to march right through your front door. Your son came running down the stairs.
"Did you bring the potion mister Oakenshield?" he asked. He looked up at the dwarf with big, round eyes. He followed the dwarf upstairs. He watched him kneel down beside your bed. He saw his hand caressing your cheek.
"Why did you leave my sister if you love her?" he asked with a soft voice.
Thorin' hand stilled. His head turned to him. "Your sister?"
The boy nodded. "Yes, my sister. Do you know that she loves you too? Why did you leave us without saying goodbye if you love her? I don't understand."
The dwarves' face paled. He had left you for no good reason. He only left because he thought that you were married. He thought you had a son... Oin rushed in with a green potion in hand. Thorin made way for him, blaming himself for being so stupid.
A small hand got a hold of his. "Is she going to be alright?"
Thorin kneeled down so that he was on the same eye level as the boy. "Of course she is going to be alright. Your sister is a very strong youg woman."
The boy nodded. But the tears were already coming. He threw himself against Thorin as he cried his eyes out. He was met with two arms that held him for as he long as he needed to be held.
The days past. Sometimes you opened your eyes and were able to utter a few words.
Sometimes you didn't respond for days.
Thorin and your brother made sure that your lips stayed wet. Together they waited by the side of your bed until the worst part of your fever would magically disappear. Every hour it seemed more likely that it would happen soon.
Finally the day came that you opened your eyes and that they stayed open...
He was still by your side, holding your hand. "My beloved, I didn't tell you before but I-"
"You are an idiot." Your voice sounded kind of rashy after not using it for a couple of days.
"You are awake!" your brother exclaimed. He buried himself in your arms, a couple of tears soaking into your nightshirt.
"Hey little one. Did the big silly dwarf take good care of you?" You eyed Thorin from the corner of your eyes. His mouth was slightly opened.
He recovered rather quickly. "I know that I am a fool. I just thought that... he was your son."
Both you and your brother looked up at him. "Excuse me?"
Thorin looked down at his hands. "You called her 'mom' the other day and I thought that you were married so I chose to leave. I am in love with you. You are my one. I couldn't watch you be with another man.
I came back as soon as I heard you had fallen ill. Husband or no husband, I had to see if I could do something for you. I-"
You held up a hand. "Thorin, before you continue your speech for another half hour..." You smiled at him, squeezing his giant hand. "I love you too."
He leaned in, kissing you. Your brother turned around making puking noises.
"Oh, grow up" you said jokingly when the kiss broke.
"Don't you have to ask me for permission to court her master dwarf? I am the only related male she has left" your brother said, holding his head high.
Thorin chuckled. "Excuse me, you are entirely correct." He stood up, holding his hands behind his back. "I would like your permission to court your sis-"
"Yes!" your brother screamed, jumping on the bed to wrap his arms around Thorin' neck.
And that is the tale of how your wonderful courtship started.
