"We are going to die, aren't we?"
Dwalin sighed heavily. "For the fifth time, no, we are not." He sat down beside you. "Thorin is going to kill me if I bring you back dead."
You nudged his shoulder playfully. "And you care about me also" you teased.
"Not a chance." He got up again. "We have to make a plan to get out of here."
With a sigh you laid down on the wooden planks that were called a bed. "Thank you for pointing that out, it hadn't occured to me that it would be safer to leave this place. You know, the orc's could grow on you."
"Is that supposed to be a joke?" he asked with a gruff tone to his otherwise cheery voice.
"No, just pointing out the good things about the situation" you said nonchalantly. Currently, you were counting the amount of spiderwebs on the ceiling. "After all, we don't know for how long we will be here."
Dwalin shook the metal bars one more time.
"You are not going to get through them" you pointed out.
He banged his head against the metal. "Do you have any idea in how much trouble we are?" he spat, turning sharply.
You continued looking at the ceiling. "Aye, I think I do. We were captured by orc's and dragged towards their hide-out. Now we have been waiting here for almost an entire day, which is already a remarkable long time for them to keep us alive.
We are probably going to die within the next two hours because they will get bored. Either they hang us or they kill one of us during the walk over there" you said casually.
Dwalin stared at you. "You would be lucky to get hanged by that lot. Do you have any idea what other ways they could use to kill you?"
"Well, I was thinking that they could use the swords they took from us. You know? They hold one hand and they push the pointy end straight through you? I bet that hurts."
The dwarf stared at you for a little longer before he turned around muttering something about your mother dropping you on your head.
Somewhere in a corner that you couldn't see because of the dark, there was a dripping sound. You figured it was just water sippling down from the earth above. It could also be a corpse that was slowly decomposing with the blood now coming out a hole but... Let's stick with the water.
"They are on their way Dwalin. It won't be long now" you said reassuringly. For a moment you thought about getting up and offering him a hug.
But you didn't want to die already, so you stayed put.
"Aye, they are. Thorin must have lost his mind by now, looking for his lass" Dwalin said. He had given up on breaking the metal bars. "On the other hand, they are taken an afwul long time to get here" he said irritated.
"Not up to your liking? Then maybe you shouldn't have gotten yourself captured."
Dwalin softly shoved you to the side so that he could sit. He would say it was a soft push anyway. "Me? I was trying to save you! Maybe I should have left you alone" he said.
"Then Thorin would have killed you already. Now you get to live a little longer" you joked.
Dwalin' shoulders shook as he tried to muffle his laughter. "You are cute together."
You pushed yourself up on one elbow to look at the tough warrior. "Where does that come from?"
He shrugged. "It is just an observation. He worries more because he has to look after you now too. But..." he took a deep breath, "you also make him smile a lot more. Thank you for that lass."
You weren't exactly sure what to say to that. Sometimes it was hard to know what went on in his mind. However, at times like these it was his honesty and the suddenness of his words that caught you off guard.
"T-thank you Dwalin" you said softly.
He nodded to let you know he heard you. "That man of yours should hurry up a bit. I am getting hungry." You shared a laugh in the cold, dim cell. *Thud*
You shot up from the wooden planks. "What was that?"
Dwalin remained seated, a knowing smirk on his lips. "That, is our rescue team."
Soon after he said that, more thuds could be heard from above your heads. Whatever it was what was going on the surface was going on with brutal force.
You were hidden too far below the ground to hear screams so you had no idea who was attacking who.
"It can also be the elves Dwalin. They won't know we are down here" you said, worried.
Dwalin's eyes widened a little before he collected himself. "Rivendell is too far off lass. They wouldn't venture so far from their own borders. It must be Thorin and the others" he said. The doubtfull tone behind his words didn't escape your attention.
"And what if the orc's were attacked by trolls? We ran into them too! Or maybe there are goblins who got killed by accident. Dwalin, we could be in a lot of trouble right now" you said. Your hands were getting sweaty.
He put a hand on your back, placing himself in front of you. "They won't be able to get to us if they don't know where we are" he said, trying to reassure you.
"Wouldn't that mean we would die here of starvation?"
He rolled his eyes, there was just no pleasing you now was there. "Everything will be alright lass we simply need t- Sssh" he put a finger on his lips.
You completely disappeared behind him, trying to make yourself as small as possible.
Dwalin made himself bigger, shielding you with his own body. Whoever came down to the prison would first have to face him.
"I think they are here" you heard someone say in the distance.
"Probably not, we should have run into them by now. They must have escaped already." That was the voice of Kili, it must be.
"We are here!" you shouted as soon as you recognised his voice.
Even before you finished your sentence, the wooden door to your section was pushed open with force. Thorin appeared in the doorway, holding up a candle. His eyes needed some time to adjust. First he saw the body hanging in a corner.
His heart started racing before he saw it's face and realised it wasn't you.
"Over here you orcdung. For how long were you going to leave us in here" Dwalin growled.
You closed your eyes when the light of the candle came your way. Two long days in a dark hole underground hadn't offered you much sunlight.
"Âzyungâl" he cried out. Thorin gave the candle to someone behind him, grabbed his axe and swung it full force at the lock that kept you trapped. It gave in at the first blow.
"There we go. You were taking far too long" Dwalin said. He banged his head against his brother' as soon as he saw them.
You were scooped up in the warm, strong hold of your suitor. "How are you? Please tell me you are not injured in any way. They met their fate, don't worry about it. I will get you out of here, unharmed" he spoke into your ear.
"Thorin, I-"
"I came as quickly as I could. We couldn't find their tracks at first but I found you. I will never stop searching for you when you are not with me, believe me. I will never let abandon you my love."
You didn't even try to get a word in anymore.
Thorin pulled back a little so that he could look at you. "Are you alright?"
You smiled at him. "Doing much better now that you are here" you said lovingly. "I could have broken out myself though."
He kissed your forehead after inspecting your head for possibly injuries. "I know I fell in love with a strong lass. I have never doubted that for a second" he said, pulling a strand of hair out of your face. Carefully, he tucked it behind your ear.
Your cheeks heated up. "You never call me lass" you mumbled.
Thorin's face brightened. "You are my lass. Maybe I should tell you more often." He leaned in, pulling you back against his chest. "I love you so much, ghivashel. Words fall short to describe what I feel for you."
"And I love you" you say, your voice muffled by his tunic.
