Imagine taking you along on the quest

Imagine suggested by icecreamy2 ; Imagine you are Bilbo's young daughter. Gandalf suggests he takes you with him on the quest. The dwarves think he is insane for suggesting such a young girl comes along. So when you are on the quest, they fight over who gets to feed you/read to you/etc. Fili and Kili lose her at some point.

"You suggest we do what?!"

They all started talking as one. All that Gandalf could make of their words was that he was apparently 'insane' en quite possibly 'senile'. He had enough.

"If I say that she is to come with us, then it is up to her guardian to decide!" he finished weakly.

Because to be honest he did know that this was not his call. No matter how strong his argument would be, and he had some good ones stuffed up his long sleeve, it was Bilbo' call. If he said 'no' then it meant that he would have to reason with the hobbit.

Bilbo stood behind the wizard. His mouth was agape, his mind racing. His daughter got up off Kili' lap. "I'd like to tag along!" she said. The room fell silent.

"You know, I think I could prove useful in the long run. Maybe I can tell you all some stories when you are feeling down!" she suggested with a bright smile.

They all 'awww-ed' in unison.

The decision was made for Bilbo that night. You were to join the company as the story teller.

And if Bilbo wanted you to stay at home than he knew better than to open his mouth. He hadn't spoken up before so he didn't have a say in the matter now.

On their way they went.

Two weeks later

Thorin cleared his throat. The mutterings ended. He put his hands behind his back to look even more majestic than before. If that was even possible.

"We are here because we have to discuss a very serious matter. We can't continue our journey if we don't settle this once and for all" he started.

The others nodded in agreement. Thorin motioned for Balin to come over. The older dwarf was carrying a large scroll. When it unrolled, it kept going even after hitting the floor. It rolled all the way past the first two rows of dwarves.

On the scroll were names and activities.

"Balin has made a list, a contract so you will, as to whom gets to spend what kind of activity with Flora every single day. From now on we won't have to argue about it amongst each other. Balin has taken into account the activity that each dwarf prefers.

Also some activities will be undertaken by all of us. Because we, as one, will be the best parents that this child will ever have. It takes a village to raise a child. For now, a company will have to do. Another thing -"

"We get it, Thorin. You lot all want to spend time with my daughter because you think she is simply adorable. And now you came up with a contract. Can we move on?" Bilbo was so done with this.

He tried not to spoil his daughter too much and this was so not helping.

The king huffed and puffed out his chest but didn't reply. Everyone came forward to sign the scroll. Now, it was officially settled.

It didn't mean that everything went smoothly though...

"What are we going to do master Fili?" Flora asked as she swung the hand playfully that was holding hers.

Kili was leading the way towards a place he called perfect for hide-'n'-seek. "Not far to go now!"

Fili held Flora' hand tightly. He had never had the responsibility over a small child, not since he was a child himself. This was the first time that he was left alone with a child as an adult. He was feeling kind of nervous.

She almost tripped over the uneven ground but Fili caught her before she fell. "Careful now" he said gently.

Kili dashed forward, meaning that they had arrived.

"Here we are! You see, there are trees everywhere, and rocks and small caves. There is no way that the seeker will find the hiders soon!" Kili exclaimed.

Fili felt a sinking feeling in his stomache. "Is that a smart idea brother?" he asked.

Kili frowned. "Why wouldn't it be? If we want to play hide-'n'-seek then we want to be able to hide well. You taught me that when I was younger."

Fili sighed. He let go of Flora' hand. "And how many times did you get lost when you were 'hiding'?"

"Are you trying to say something?"

Fili shrugged. "You tell me. I'm just saying that you always seemed to get 'lost' when you had done something wrong. And then you would claim that you were playing. No one knew that they were playing anything with you though."

"Maybe nobody listened when I asked them to play with me. I can't help it that no one came looking."

"You know we did. And then you kept moving. You never stayed in one place."

Kili smiled. "That is because I'm a brilliant hider. I don't stay in one place."

"That is how the game works Kili."

"You taught me not to stay in one place when an enemy is looking for you big brother."

Fili sighed. "We are not going to get anywhere with this. Our time with Flora is running out. We should make the most of it by playing with her. Not arguing."

Kili nodded. "Where is she though?"

His heart stopped beating for a second. He looked to his left. She wasn't there. Wasn't she just hear with them? "Flora!" he shouted. No one replied. Not even a little giggle from the young hobbit.

They looked behind every tree, searched every small cave, looked around every rock... she was nowhere.

"Uncle is going to kill us" Kili said, staring at where he had seen her last.

Fili shook his head, no. "Bilbo is going to torture us to death."

They didn't immediately return to camp. Maybe she simply hid a little further off. So they kept searching for her all the way back to camp. They still hadn't found her when they returned in the camp.

Both brothers looked down at the ground as they made their way to their uncle.

"Uncle, we-" Fili started when he was interupted by a cheerful scream: "Fili! Kili!"

They both looked up. Flora was sitting on their uncle' lap, getting her hair braided by the older dwarf. When they met their uncle' icy glare, they knew they were still in trouble.

He just wouldn't murder them in front of the young hobbit. For now they were safe.

"Ahem." They froze. Slowly turning around.

Bilbo' arms were crossed over his chest, his foot tapping impatiently. "A word, please." He turned around, expecting them to follow him.

"Our torture begins" Fili whispered.
