Imagine living a sea life with Thorin

They are going to be (loosely) based on Dutch songs. For the people who don't know yet, I am Dutch :P That is why I chose that country first.

These are perhaps not going to be typical Dutch songs, but the ones that I like :) And I will translate the lyrics for you to the best of my abilities. It will be at the end of the chapter.

Ancora - Dronken van de liefde

https://youtu.be/EzJRimY5F3I

"Love?" Thorin walks up to you. "Are you alright?"

You don't hear his feet coming towards you on the stone floor. Your mind is preocuppied with memories. The ones you made during your traveling years.

When Erebor was taken and Thorin and his people wandered to find a new home, you were unaware of the tragedy that happened on the other side of Middle-Earth. Like always, you were fishing for food.

You didn't have mouths to fill of your own. But the village relied on your fishing skills. An empty net in your boat meant another day of not eating.

This year the harvest had been a little better than last. You didn't intervene too much with the farmers' ways of looking after their land. All you had noticed was that the harvest was worse every time they planted the same crops in the same place two years in a row.

It hadn't gone over well when you shared this observation with the farmers. You were a little too nosy to their liking.

All you did now was looking after yourself and the townspeople. They were the ones who needed to eat and it became clear to you that you brought in the most food.

The Gulf of Lune brought in plenty of fish. As soon as morning fell, the townspeople would open their windows and find that your boat was already gone.

When you wanted to be alone you could be out for two weeks in a row. You didn't need much food, the ale was what you really needed. There always was a large supply safely tucked away in a crate.

However, that was not the main reason for why you loved your job.

The sea itself was what brought you out of your house each day. You rather swung from side to side on a rough sea than to stay on solid ground. There lay a challenge in each fishing day.

No matter how many times you went out to go on a trip, you could never be certain that you would return.

There was no doubt that you were the best in town but the sea was merciless. It wouldn't be tamed by anyone. But it would try to tame you every time you came into it's territory. Keep your mind in check and you had more chance of returning home.

Make one wrong move and the sea would win.

Those were the odds you were willing to face with a life on the sea.

Some man called it 'drunken love' and perhaps it was. Only fools would go out to such a fierce mistress. Yet everyone who had seen her would return without thinking too long.

"Love?"

A mild sea was a boring day to you. Anyone else would call it a blissful day out on an unpredictable field filled with enemies. You rather saw your enemies instead of knowing that they were there and not being able to see them.

It should also be mentioned that the other people in your village thought you mad. Going out when other fisherman returned, leaving early in the morning not to return until past midnight.

Your favorite time of a fishing day would be at night. Maybe it was unsafe to do so. Yet the sea called for you. You felt it tugging at your heart every minute you spend on land. One day you would built a boat so large that you could life on it.

Only for the bare necessities would you go on land. Apparently you needed vegetables to survive.

And normal water instead of the salty kind the sea offered. It provided in many ways but that.

You sighed. Now that you lived in Erebor, you rarely saw the sea. You missed the salty smell and the swaying of your trustworthy boat. Not that you would ever see it again.

The day you left with the company was also the day your boat was smashed against the rocks. Thorin had risked his life to safe you as you clung to the rocks claiming that you could safe your old companion.

At first the dwarves thought that you had tried to safe a human companion. Once they realized you were talking about a boat, they clapped your back and told you to come with them.

They could use someone as fierce as you.

Living on the road felt very unnatural to you. It was true that you were used to the hard conditions but everything was so... stable. Nothing was swinging from left to right. So strange.

Every chance you got, you spend it near water. Whenever you passed a lake you would jump in and swim after them. Or when you found a large enough log you would make paddles and follow them on your makeshift boat.

The dwarves thought it was just a strange habbit. They didn't hear the calling of the water like you did.

Now that you lived in Erebor your fishing years felt like they were a life time away. You were happy with your king whom had become your husband. The dwarves were welcoming once they found out you had helped reclaiming their kingdom.

There was more than enough food. The people of former Lake Town were more than happy to listen to your observations. And harvest turned out better than anyone could have expected.

"Is the sea calling to you?" Thorin gathered your hair in his hands and tied it into a pony tail.

His voice finally came through to you. You looked up, surprised to see your husband there. "Aye, I miss it Thorin. I am happy here with you but." You fell silent.

His fingers softly massaged your skull. "I think I understand. It must be the same feeling as I feel for gold and treasure." He sat down behind you so that he could braid your hair. "The call sounds more like a continues tugging, a need to come back to it."

You leaned into his touch. "Exactly that." A happy sigh escaped your lips. "I would give up everything just to see the sea once more."

Thorin focused on the hair in his hands. "You would leave me for the sea?" he asked, his voice weaker than before.

"I wouldn't want to leave you. But if you forbid me to go or you would make me choose, I would still go to the sea. You could say it would be you leaving me rather than the other way around."

Thorin hummed, feeling realief flood his body. "Then I think we should make it a priority to have Fili taking over from me a little sooner than we had originally planned."

Your eyes widened and you shot up to look at your husband. "Are you serious?"

He smiled. "If it would make you that happy to travel the sea once more..." he took a deep breath, "then I won't stand in your way. However, I am coming with you. That is my only condition."

You threw your arms around his neck. "That sounds lovely. We just need to wait for the sea to calm down before we go" you said.

Thorin placed a kiss on the top of your head. "That is not happening for another couple of months my love. I am sure my nephew will be ready to take over before that time."

"Aye, but you are not ready for the sea around that time of year. We will have to wait until the sea has calmed down. I would hate you see you seasick sweety." You lifted your head to kiss his nose.

"I am most definitely ready for the sea when you look at everything I have gone through in my life" he says, sounding slightly offended.

"I know that. But the sea is a whole other cup of tea than fighting against orcs. And everyone knows that you are the best at that" you added.

You felt his chest puffing out in pride beneath you.

"Then it is decided. I will let the court know that Fili will take over for me in my absence. And we will have to stock up for our adventure. Since you know more about the sea, my love, would you take care of the preparations for that part of our adventure?"

"That sounds like a great idea."

And on your went on your adventure with your king. You did leave earlier then planned.

Just like planned, Thorin got sea sick plenty of times until the sea calmed down a month later.

(This is the rough translation of the song;)

The ship is located on the quay

The tension is rising

Just a couple more hours and we are off

The crew is preparing for a long journey

"We are going off to sea" it goes through my head

A large bottle of rum and my captains coat

An old duffle bag and a good compas

Chorus:

I am drunk, drunk

Drunk of the love for the sea

I am drunk, drunk

That love I will always take with me

Ohohohohohohoh Hey!(4x)

Once outside with the fierce wind, all hands have to be on deck

It is a life that I find most beautiful

Here on this ship I feel like I truly belong

The sparkle of the salt as it fiercely foams

It is the love for the sea that lives inside the sailor

Chorus

Ohohohohohohoh Hey! (2x)

But after a couple of months on the rough sea

I sometimes long for my house

I can already picture myself sitting at the local pub

But out here on the sea I feel at home

Chorus (3x)

That love I will always take with me

Ohohohohohohoh (4x)
