"Love, are you coming with me? I am going to pick up some vegetables for dinner!" you called through the small hobbit hole.
Your voice boomed through the empty halls. No answer came to your question. You sighed. Sometimes your betrothed was so caught up in one of his many books that he simply didn't hear you.
~Or he doesn't want to hear you. Maybe he's ignoring you?~
That voice again. A small empty hole started to form in your stomache. That is not something you needed to hear right now. Of course he... maybe he loved you. Why would he propose to you if he didn't?
"Sweetheart?" you called out again, your stomache starting to hurt. Again no answer.
You followed the scent of honey tea until you reached his study. "Bilbo I wanted to ask you if you would like to c-"
He sighed, putting the book down on his desk. "I just got to a very exciting part in my book, (y/n). What is it?" He sounded annoyed. You had disturbed him.
"N-nothing, it is nothing. I'm sorry" you immediately apologised instead of asking him to come to the market with you.
He turned around to face you. The light of the fireplace created dancing shadows on his face. "You decided to disturb my reading time when you have absolutely nothing to ask me?" He rolled his eyes. "That is just splendid."
Tears welled up in your eyes. "I shall leave you to it then."
He threw his hands in the air. "Thank you, that is all I ask!" he said.
You didn't say another word when you left the house. Maybe some fresh air would do you good. This had been going on for some time now. Whatever you said or did it ticked Bilbo off. Maybe it was really you who was causing him so much stress.
He even had to accustom the halls to your size, seeing as how you were a human and he was a hobbit. You now had the largest home in the Shire and beyond.
When it came to a hobbit hole, that was.
It definitely brought the gossip mill down on you after the built was finished.
Not to mention the stares you received after the village found out that you were already living together. And you weren't even married yet. Just engaged.
Many housewives whispered behind your back how you probably had to be pregnant for this to happen. Why else would a member of their respectable village let themselves get trapped in such a love-lacking relationship?
You followed one of the less crowded paths into town. Sometimes you wished you would have been able to grow vegetables on your own ground.
Unfortunately you weren't great at keeping things alive. Apart from yourself that was.
And you even failed at that sometimes.
Not that you died but eating proved to be a difficult task at times. Especially when you were younger and you got made fun of because of being a bit bigger.
The smell of fresh baked cakes and bread greeted you long before you could see the market place. You rushed down over the bridge to reach your favorite shops quicker.
Some woman were standing in front of the sweets table. They were just talking, having bought all they needed already.
You tried to make your way to the front but they didn't move out of the way. "Excuse me? May I please pass?" you asked shyly.
They didn't respond or reacted to let you know they heard you.
What did you have to do now? You didn't want to bother anyone so instead of asking again or tapping them on the shoulder you just moved on to another stall. Those woman would surely leave soon, you could always visit the sweet' stall later.
The book stall. Another one of your favorites. Maybe if you just sneaked a peek you would find another -
"I'm sorry miss, we are closed." The curtain was pulled down over the stall. The hobbit crossed his arms over his chest.
You looked down at the ground. "I-I am sorry, I thought your stall was still open seeing that it is still early in the afternoon."
Some of the woman from the other stall chuckled, pointing at you. The stall owner growned irritably. "Look, can you just leave? We don't want no humans here. Hasn't that been clear for over these past few weeks? How clear do we have to be?"
You didn't dare reply or look up. All you wanted was to disappear right there and then. You had done nothing to these people but be kind to them and offered them help.
"Didn't you hear me?" the hobbit shouted.
But there was nothing you could do. Your feet were unable to move. Your hands started shaking, you closed your eyes and pretended the rest of the world just wasn't there.
"We may have a mute on our hands."
"Even better."
"I told you nothing good could come off a human."
"THAT IS ENOUGH!"
Your eyes opened but you still didn't dare to look up. Someone stomped over to you. An arm was wrapped around your waist.
"What has she done to you other than be kind and helpful? Don't pretend that I don't know how afwul you have been treating my betrothed" Bilbo spoke angrily.
"Farmer Dan, I seem to remember that (y/n) helped you out with the harvest last week?" Before the man could protest, Bilbo continued. "You were going to be too late and your crops were going to spoil but my love offered to help you out. And did you or did you not gladly accept her help?"
The farmer had no choice but to nod. Bilbo was correct.
"And you!" Bilbo pointed at one of the ladies at the sweet' stall. "Did my beloved not watch over your children when you were in need of a baby sitter?"
The woman started to look an afwul lot like a tomato.
"She is a great teacher too!" Sam yelled excitedly as he ran forward to hug your skirts. "Miss (y/n) always tells us the most wonderful stories!" he exclaimed.
You smiled down at the child. The bottomless pit in your stomache closed. Maybe there were people who cared about you.
"Oi! And she taught us how to play new games that we've never even heard of!" Pippin exclaimed. He pulled his cousin Merry along with him to stand with Sam.
The adults looked down in shame.
Bilbo removed his arm from your waist. He tilted your chin with his finger to raise your head. His eyes were filled with warmth and love. It made your heart skip a beat.
"And sometimes even I treat you in a way I shouldn't be treating my princess" he spoke softly, caressing your cheek with his thumb. "My apologies for being so short with you for the last couple of weeks."
A tear landed on his hand. "Did I do something wrong? If it is me then you should tell me because I can change. I can be better if you need me to be. And -"
He kissed you, resting his head against yours after. "Don't be silly, I love you for the way you are. There is nothing I would change about you." He sighed. "I was short with you because this wedding planning is taking a toll on my good mood. Nothing that is your fault though."
"Are you sure?"
"Absolutely, completele, without a doubt sure." He laughed. "Why would I want to marry a woman that is so perfect and then go ahead and change everything about her? That would just be silly."
Pippy pulled on a leg of Bilbo' trousers. "But, mister Bilbo, you are a little silly sometimes."
Bilbo closed his eyes, you giggled at the child' innocent statement. "Yes, Pippin, sometimes I am a little silly. You are correct. I was silly for making you feel unloved and unwanted. Can you forgive me love?"
Now it was Sam' turn to gently tuck on your skirt. "Mister Bilbo forget to inform you that it was us who told him that you were upset miss (y/n). We can marry you too?"
"And already there are other suitors after your heart, can you believe it?" Bilbo said jokingly. "Please do me the honor of staying with me. I promise I will be more attentive to your feelings in the future."
You wrapped your arms around his neck. "No doubt in my mind that I want to stay with you."
You kissed in front of the crowd that slowly moved on with day to day business.
"We might have scared some of them away but I didn't like most of them anyway" Bilbo whispered in your ear after breaking the kiss. You slapped him on his chest as a way of reply.
"You are still going to be marrying mister Bilbo then?" Merry asked solemnly.
You nodded. "I'm afraid I will Merry." You leaned down so that you were eye-level with him. "But you would have been my number one pick if he hadn't come along earlier than you did" you said with a wink.
"Excuse me?"
"Nothing dear. You know we still need vegetables. Be a dear and help me look for some good ones with you sharp hobbit eyes." You placed a quick peck on Bilbo' nose before moving over to the vegetable stall.
Bilbo rolled his eyes, walking along behind you. How did he end up with such a wonderful woman? It was really beyond him.
