A Baby Story #3

I first wanted to throw in another imagine but I think you have waited long enough. Without further ado, here is the third chapter of the story that started a few days ago.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I am not sure why I am writing this instead of sleeping. We all know we could use it at this time.
What surprised me and (y/n) most was how well my brother handled the babies. I mean, of course, our companions.
Gandalf went a few steps too far with this. But what are you going to do with a wizard in your company? This was bound to happen at some point in our quest.
He should count himself lucky that my brother had his hands full with the babies. And that our king has been turned into a baby too. Although I would say that the wizard did that on purpose. No one would be foolish enough not to change Thorin as well.
Like we expected, said baby is clinging to (y/n). He doesn't seem to appreciate it when she holds another child.
This could mean that they are 'normal' inside. I wonder how it feels for them now that they are babies. It must be very frustrating to not be able to do what you want. They are all restricted to the limits that this fase in their lives brings them.
Just one and a half more days and we will have one stage behind us.
Because, like Gandalf explained, there are three more stages before they are back to their normal selves.
Let's all hope we can keep the dwarflings from hurting each other.
And us from walking off before they are grown-up again.
"You should try to get as much sleep as you can, lass" Dwalin mutters. He turns around to face you. His eyes are half closed but the same intensity is present as if he was fully awake.
No wonder, after all the years as a professional soldier.
Sleep didn't want to take you just yet. The baby in your arms had fallen asleep a little time ago. He was still holding onto you and he probably wouldn't let go any time soon.
"It is just that... I can't believe that this is my husband." You were trying to push back your tears. All day long you had been able to be strong, to hold up appearances.
After taking a break at lunch and finally being able to sleep, you still hadn't allowed yourself to think about what had happened. Now it hit you all. And it hit hard. You held the baby closer to your body as the first tears rolled down your cheek.
Dwalin pushed himself up on one arm.
"All I want is for my husband to be himself again. I know that is selfish but I need him right now. When he holds me at night, I feel most safe. It is just unfair" you said, your voice choked up.
"That isn't selfish lass" Dwalin said. He wanted to reach out at you to comfort you. But right when his hand was about to touch your shoulder, Thorin's sleepily opened.
You tried to smile through your tears. "And now I have woken you up." You looked down at baby Thorin. Softly you stroked his small cheek, hoping that he would fall asleep again. However, his eyes stayed open and focused on you.
He outstretched his hand towards your face.
You leaned forward so that he was able to touch your nose. He softly squeezed it and smiled.
"I think Thorin is trying to tell you that he can hear you lass" Dwalin spoke softly. He now pushed himself up fully and wrapped an arm around your shoulders.
Thorin didn't agree with this. His hand went back to his small body and he started making noises.
Dwalin rolled his eyes. "Stop your complaining. Let's face it, you can't comfort your wife right now. All that happened is that my arm is now laying on her shoulders. Get over yourself" Dwalin chastised the child.
His king didn't agree but focused his attention back on you anyway. Even as a baby his eyes seemed to look right through you.
"Everything is going to be alright lass. We are with a lot taking care of a small number of dwarflings. Just one more day and they will be a little more independent."
You snorted. "Toddlers are hardly less independent." A thought struck you. "Do you think they are still themselves in their mind?"
Dwalin frowned, staring at Thorin as the baby held onto one of your fingers. "I am not sure lass. To me it looks like he is just trapped in this younger form" the dwarf said, deep in thought. For him it was also hard to see all his friends like this. Especially his king.
"On the other hand, we could be seeing things differently because we know them. It may also be that he has no idea he was a grown-up before."
Thorin's eyebrows furrowed. It was a cute glare he tried to pull off.
"That is not even remotely intimidating" Dwalin said, rubbing a finger over the king's nose.
His king let go of your finger and swatted his hand towards Dwalin's big paw. The glare turned more intense.
"Why do you have to annoy him so?" you asked, smiling at your friend. "You know how easily Thorin gets angry when it involves me."
"And still you anger him every chance you get."
Shocked, you look up at Dwalin. "I don't -"
Dwalin laughed. "Yes you do. You both do." He took Thorin from you and softly laid him down on his chest. Together they slipped down a little so that Dwalin was laying more comfortable.
As soon as he was taken away from you, his small mouth started trembling.
"No, none of that" Dwalin warned. His voice sounded stern. "Your lass needs to sleep as well. There is nothing to complain about when she is still lying next to you."
The baby looked Dwalin dead in the eye as he did the only thing he could do when he couldn't lay with his wife.
"Yeah, I am not changing that" you said and turned around.
The bed dipped as Dwalin got up to change the king. Who had a suspicious smirk on his small lips.
"Blasted dwarves and their silly ideas" Gandalf mumbled as he changed yet another diaper.
Bilbo was making happy noises, inspecting his belly button as the wizard did his job. From time to time he would try to pull on the grey beard. He couldn't help it, the hair was swaying from side to side right there in front of him.
"It appears you have it all under controle, my dear friend." Elrond wat watching from a few feet away.
Gandalf didn't turn around because he knew all too well who was standing there. Judging his every move. "Don't start" he grumbled under his breath.
The elf chuckled as he walked closer. The brave little soldier he was. He looked over the wizard' shoulder to see Bilbo looking up at him with big, hazel-brown eyes. "My servants told me the hobbit eats the most out of all of them" he commented.
"Yes, yes, and he throws out more also" Gandalf said, irritated. Finally the new diaper adorned the babies lower side. Bilbo made some gurgling sounds as he was shoved into Elrond's arms.
Elrond had to try real hard not to laugh as he watched his friend hurry towards the next baby. "Does he take good care of you, little one?" he asked the small hobbit.
The door swung open again, and in marched Dwalin at the head of the group. "Have they survived the night?" he asked. He laughed when Gandalf directed an angry glare towards him. "Calm down. It is you who brought this upon us. No need to get angry at me."
Gandalf huffed indignantly. "I have had enough for now." He grabbed his staff. "Yesterday, I had diaper and nap duty. Last night I had diaper and nap duty." He threw a dirty diaper in the corner of the room. "Today, this old man is going to enjoy some peace and quiet for a change."
Balin shook his head with a smile. "We all know you deserve it. Thank you for the help."
Only a few curse words could be heard as some sort of response as Gandalf left the room.
Soon after some elves came into the room as well. They checked up on some of the babies and took a seat when they found most didn't need immediate care. It was already a lot less hectic than yesterday.
Maybe the dwarves had even come to terms with their state at this point.
"What should we do with them today?" you asked as you went over to Bifur to check on him. The poor thing looked a lot better too but still not quite healthy. "You will get there little one."
You stuck out one finger, gently laying it in one of his small hands. Instinctively, he clenched his hand.
"What do you mean lass?" Dwalin asked. When you looked up you noticed that he was once again holding two babies in his arms. How did he do it?
You shrugged. "I don't know, maybe we can take them outside or something? They have been stuck inside all day long" you pointed out.
"We can take them out one by one but I don't think it is a good idea" Balin said. Baby bofur let out a small burp in his arms. "Dwarves are fragile when they are young. We grow stronger over the years."
Dwalin nodded. "The weather especially is something that can effect the little ones strongly. We can't take the risk."
"It was just a suggestion" you mumbled.
The weather was beautiful today. You had stuck your head outside one of the windows this morning, right before Thorin needed another bottle.
"What is this?"
"What is it brother?" Dwalin asked, alarmed. He rushed over to Balin's side. His mouth fell open. "That can't be" he said astonished.
You hurried over to them to see what they were talking about. And there you saw it...
"I thought we had two days" you said confused.
