'Can I stay with you tonight, master Bilbo? Mommy and Daddy are yelling again' you said as you looked up to your neighbour with pleading eyes. You were just a young hobbit and you didn't want to be home right now. Thankfully, Bilbo was always ready to take you in and look after you if your parents were fighting again. 'Of course you can stay here' he said and huried you inside. First he put you down on his couch and put a warm blanket around you. 'You are shivering from head to toe' he mumbled to himself, busying himself to look after you. He always felt angry when his neighbours, once again, didn't look after their child.
You were a sweetheart and Bilbo knew that he would take great care of you if you had been his child. 'When is the last time you had a bath?' he asked you when he noticed the dried dirt on your skin. You shrugged. 'Mommy didn't have the time for the last two weeks' you answered and watched the older hobbit staring at you in astonishment. You were never sure why your neighbour seemed to be so worried about you, but you did feel like you were safe here. 'And the last time you ate?' Bilbo asked. 'I had a nut two days ago!' you said proudly. Bilbo buried his face in his hands. 'Are you alright master Bilbo?' you asked worried. 'I will get you some food' was the only thing he said.
Curious to see what he was doing, you followed him to his pantry. Your eyes widened as you saw all the food on the shelves. 'Where do you get all this food from?' you asked, grabbing an apple from the middle shelf. 'From the market, have you never been there? They sell lots of food down there' Bilbo explained. He took some sausages, cauliflower and potatoes from his pantry and grabbed your hand to guide you to the kitchen. He dropped everything on the counter and got a fire going. 'Can you cut the cauliflower for me?' he asked as he was busy to prepare the seasoning. You looked at the food in front of you, not sure what a cauliflower was and what he meant with 'cutting' it.
Maybe it had something to do with that weird looking thing with four pointy things attached to it? Or was it that small bowl looking thing attached to a stick? Bilbo was done seasoning the sausages and saw that you looked pretty confused. He knelt down beside you and wrapped a comforting arm around you. 'Are you scared to cut it yourself?' he asked carefully. You turned your eyes to the ground and didn't dare to look at him. What if Bilbo would laugh at you for not knowing what a cauliflower was or how you were supposed to cut it. Whatever that meant.
'(Y/N)?' Bilbo asked. 'I do not know what you mean' you whispered. Bilbo frowned. He hadn't heard what you just said. 'Say that again?' 'I do not know what you mean' you said a little louder. Bilbo looked at you in shock. 'Have you never cooked before?' You shook your head. 'Didn't your parents taught you... Oh, never mind. Well then, I think I will have to teach you then.' You looked up to him in delight. You weren't sure what he was talking about, but Bilbo was a great teacher with much patience. Bilbo got you a stool to stand on and grabbed a knife from his drawer. 'See, this is how we cut the cauliflower' he explained and started cutting the vegetable.
You watched his every move with interest. 'I didn't know you could use a knife like that too' you said, following the movement the knife made with your eyes. Bilbo stopped for a moment and was about to ask you what you meant before he silenced himself. At this point he didn't care what he had to do or what law he would break, but he wouldn't let you go back to those hobbits. Not over his dead body. 'Do you want to try it?' he asked instead. You looked doubtfully at the knife, but when Bilbo helped you, you knew you could accomplish anything. 'Did I do it right?' you asked. Bilbo smiled fondly at you. 'You did great, I will teach you much more if you are willing to live here with me.' You nodded enthusiastically and hugged Bilbo tightly. This was the first time you actually felt safe around an adult, and you were more then happy to stay with Bilbo.
