An Unexpected Companion
Disclaimer: I do not own the Hobbit nor anything relating to Middle Earth. All rights go to the great author JRR Tolkien and this fanfic will be based off of the Hobbit Trilogy films directed by Peter Jackson. I also do not own the cover picture. The only character that I own is Basil. Enjoy!
My Dear Nephew
I see that your Uncle Bilbo has been filling your head to the brim with stories of our adventures with the Company of Thorin Oakenshield. Though the quest to reclaim Erebor took place sixty years ago, it still feels as if it only occurred yesterday. And yes, your uncle has told you the stories of our journey to great extent. However, since you've been remarkably persistent with your letters, I suppose I will tell you my side of the story, which may add a tale or two more than what you've been told...
The mid-afternoon sun shown brightly as I was walking down the path that led towards Hobbiton. Unfortunately, I was running very behind because though I meant to be there by now, the effort of preparing for my baby sister's birthday party, which was in a few days, took longer than expected. I was able to set out yesterday morning, so I should arrive later this evening. Except, as I was walking, I came across a peculiar sight.
It was a dwarf.
It wasn't necessarily the dwarf that was strange. Dwarves were usually the most common visitors to the Shire. It was just that this dwarf seemed clearly lost. He was glancing in every direction for some type of sign and I could've sworn that I heard him curse some poor soul by the name of Gandalf. I grew rather curious about where he was heading, so I tightened up my bun that kept my curly dark brown hair from swinging in front of my blue eyes and straightened out my yellow dress.
Deeming myself presentable, I strode up to the dwarf and greeted him,
"Hello. Are you in need of any assistance?"
The dwarf turned towards me and his blue eyes seemed to pierce into my very being. The dwarf had long raven black hair and a shorter beard compared to most dwarves I've met. He wore armor that had a light fur coat over it and on top of that he even wore a dark blue cloak. After a minute of judging me, the dwarf answered with a gruff voice,
"I am in search of a place called Hobbiton."
"Oh!" I exclaimed with excitement clasping my hands together, which briefly startled the dwarf, "I am actually on my way there now. I can guide you there if you wish, Mr...?"
"Some directions would be just fine." The dwarf replied not giving his name.
"No, that won't do at all. Don't want you getting turned around again. Since I am heading there as well, I must insist on being your guide." I told him. I took off down the road and beckoned him to follow. He just stood there observing the whole scenario, so I called out to him again, "Come along! I'm sure you don't want to be late!"
With that in mind, the dwarf hesitantly began to comply. He trailed behind me without saying a word.
After a few moments of silence, I turned towards him and wondered aloud, "If you don't mind my asking, what is your name?"
"Thorin." The dwarf simply stated.
"Pleasure to meet you, Mr. Thorin. My name is Basil Brandybuck and I am from Buckland, which was actually the direction that you almost went. If you ever find yourself going in that direction again, you should stop by Brandy Hall. My family and I will give you a warm welcome should you ever decide to stop by." I rambled.
"Thank you, Ms. Basil." Thorin said, then asked, "And what is your reason for heading to Hobbiton?"
"I am planning on meeting with my fiancé and his family, then plan on staying with my cousin." I informed him.
"Congratulations. When are the two of you getting married?" Thorin questioned.
"Thank you. As for the wedding date, to be honest, we haven't really decided. That's why I am meeting with him and his family to try and decide the best day." I admitted.
"Well, I wish the two of you all the best." Thorin said.
I gave him a nod of thanks and we traveled in a comfortable silence for a while. As the sun was starting to set, I dug into my pack and pulled out two sandwiches that were secured in individually wrapped green cloths. Thorin looked like he was about to refuse, so I quickly shoved one into his hand, and continued walking before he could say anything.
I explained, "We won't be reaching Hobbiton until after dark. Eat it when you wish, but it is important to keep your energy levels up. Besides, I always bring extra food when I travel because you never know what will happen on the road."
"Thank you again, Ms. Basil." Thorin replied.
"Just call me Basil." I insisted and Thorin gave me a curt nod. Once we had both finished our sandwiches, I realized that we were nearing Hobbiton. So I turned to Thorin and questioned, "If you don't mind my asking, what is your reason to visit Hobbiton?"
"I am meeting with some of my kin there." Thorin answered.
"At the Green Dragon?" I wondered.
"No, a hobbit there has graciously agreed to host us for the evening." Thorin told me.
Even though I was extremely curious which hobbit they were visiting, I decided that it would be best to leave it there. Soon enough, Hobbiton came into view. I took in a deep breath and couldn't help but feel at peace whenever I saw Hobbiton with its rolling hills and little rivers.
I turned towards Thorin and announced, "Welcome, Mr. Thorin, to Hobbiton."
As Thorin took in the sight, we made our way towards the market which was the village's center. Once we reached it, I turned towards him and proclaimed, "Well, here we are. The market is over there, though it won't be open until morning, the Green Dragon is over there, and if you need any further assistance, I will be over at the Gamgee's just right over there. Is there anything else I can do for you, Mr. Thorin?"
"I need no further assistance. I spotted the hobbit hole I need to go to. Thank you for help, Basil Brandybuck." Thorin answered.
"It was my pleasure, Mr. Thorin. I wish you well on your travels." I stated.
From there, we parted ways. As I approached the door to the Gamgee's and knocked on it, I briefly glanced towards my cousin's place and I stood there frozen in shock. In front of my cousin, Bilbo Baggins', place stood Thorin knocking on his door.
What on earth is my cousin up to?
