|Chapter 2|

Keyann

I stalked up to Joash Locke. Very nasty boy. "Hey, Joash!" I called. He turned and faced me. Smirking, he ran fingers through his hair. It would have been fitting if this was not a place where Dumpsters dumped trash. "Why, hello, Amare. Anything I can help you with?" he mocked. I gritted my teeth and gripped the coffee cup harder. "Yeah, actually. You can receive this!" I yelled and flung the coffee at him. The hot liquid made contact with his face and he howled in pain.

His two lackeys sprung forward to attack me.

I knew their moves way too well and rolled to the side. They missed and crashed onto the ground, becoming unconscious. "You guys are useless!" roared Joash. He advanced on me. Dammit. I glanced around for a weapon, anything I could use to keep him in check, but there was nothing. Except... from the corner of my eye, I spotted a stray basketball. I skittered to it and grabbed it. Joash pounced on me and tried wrestling it from my grip. My palms were starting to sweat so badly and I had to do something before he conked me on the head with that basketball.

So I conked him first.

Joash gripped his head tightly in pain. "You will get the payback you deserve. Karma will get you!" he exclaimed. I rolled my eyes and knocked him again. This time he fell and remained unconscious. I grinned. "That's what you get, Joash, for calling my Mum a dog and calling me a SOB." I whispered heavily. "What?" A female voice sounded. "Detention? Me?" she said indignantly. "I did nothing! It was just a freaking game of dodgeball!" she whined. Shucks. I glanced at Joash and his lackeys sprawled out on the floor. I was gonna get found out any second.

Hide, I realised. Hide before she sees you.

I ducked behind a Dumpster and peered out. A girl with reddish hair and freckles walked into view. Upon seeing the three bodies, she gasped and bent down beside Joash. "Jo! Speak to me! Who did this to you?" she asked desperately, checking him for signs of life. Of course there would be. I wasn't that cold blooded to actually kill the guy. "Omigosh, there's blood!" Redhead shrieked and backed away.

There was? I'm pretty sure there wasn't any blood.

"There is? What happened..." I trailed off as she stood and pointed at me. "You! You tried to murder Jo, didn't you?" she demanded. No blood. I fell straight into this girl's trap. I hurriedly raised my hands in surrender. "Hey, hey, darling, nothing of that sort. It's just a favour I had to payback." I admitted. She huffed. "Am I supposed to let you go now or something? I don't have much experience with murderers." I winced. Burn... "Hey, I'm not a murderer. I didn't even kill him. See? Life signs!" I gestured to his wrist.

She stuck her tongue out. Cute.

"Don't tell me. I know." she remarked. "By the way, you're gonna be sent to the big D." My jaw dropped. "WHAT!? Why?" I asked. She shrugged. "The fact that I'm gonna tell the Principal that you tried to kill Jo and you are a big bully." I rolled my eyes. "Girlie, I ain't trying to kill him. It's just... he said some really nasty stuff about my Mom." I finished. She turned those eyes on me. "I know. Jo's kinda mean sometimes. I guess I like it that he speaks his mind." she shrugged, nervously shifting her feet around.

Ooh.

"Someone likes someone!" I singsonged and smirked. The girl blushed furiously. "Don't rub it in." she pouted, wagging a finger at me. I grinned. "What's your name?" I asked. She stiffened, then sighed. "Kelsie. You?" I replied before I could think. "Keyann." She glanced up at me. "Oh. OH! No wonder you knocked Jo out." she responded and clapped a hand over her mouth. I frowned. "Yeah?" I asked. She blushed again and sighed. "He was, well, um... telling me about the barbs you two trade and he made you out to be a bad person..." Kelsie trailed off. Pissed at Jo, but not wanting to freak Kelsie out, I refrained from punching the wall and instead kicked a stone at Jo.

Perfect landing.

It crashed into his nose and he stirred, wincing. Shit. Kelsie's eyes widened. "Run. Now. Jo's gonna be super mad." she warned and shoved me. I stumbled back and darted for the school doors. Someone groaned behind me but I slammed the doors shut. From a distance, Kelsie shooed me further in as she helped Joash up. "Where's that Keyann?" Jo asked angrily. She shrugged. "Ran off." Kelsie offered him a hand but he pushed her away. She stumbled and fell to the ground, scraping those knees. "You okay?" Joash asked. "Never been better." she commented and dabbed at the blood with her shirt. Joash flinched. "You should go to the sick bay. I'll help you there." he replied cautiously. Kelsie sniffed and drew herself up to her full height. "I'm perfectly capable of getting there myself."  She hobbled painfully to the doors where I stood.

Hidden.

Joash looked torn between helping her and taking care of his minions, but apparently thought his minions were more important and helped them up. Kelsie flung the door open and I looked her over. "Does it hurt?" The moment the words came out of my mouth I regretted it. Kelsie rolled her eyes. "Asking the obvious," she replied. I grinned and helped her along. She made it without mishap to the office -I was expecting some incident!- and knocked. Nurse Carman opened the door and let her in.

"Nasty things, these scrapes," commented the nurse as she bustled around trying to clean the scrapes.

Kelsie bit her lip as the antiseptic made contact with her flesh and hissed. Poor thing. Nurse Carman nodded when she was done and dismissed us. What a nurse. Kelsie stood and walked. "So... are we on good terms and can I not go the Big D?" I had kinda hoped that me helping her to the bay would have resulted in a pardon... Kelsie looked up at me and smiled sweetly. "Of course, Keyann. Of course not." she deadpanned. Damn. "But I helped you when you were roughed up and you helped me when I was in trouble..." I protested, trailing off as she held my glare.

"No, you have to go. I need someone to keep me company." she poked me once in the chest and ran off.

I started after her but stopped. Maybe I could go, if it meant keeping a nice girl like her company. I smiled as she peeked behind then sprinted off. I walked off to my next class and crashed into the wall. And that was when I noticed Joash's next victim.
