Turn-of-the-Century

By the end of the 19th Century, Mary had become, by far, the most common female name in America. Other girls' names celebrated beauty. The names of flowers, plants, and jewels were used as first names. The Puritans had used the name Grace for both boys and girls in reference to the grace of God. The Victorians bestowed it on girls in reference to a beautiful, graceful figure. Other popular girls' names at the time were two-syllable names ending with the letter "a," most (but not all) of which were of German origin, and nicknames ending in "y" or "ie."
