Children of Immigrants
Over 30 million Europeans immigrated to the United States between the 1830s and the 1910s. 1907 was the peak year of immigration, when 1,249,349 people entered the country. At Ellis Island, names that were difficult for immigration officials to spell or pronounce were often changed to English names. Some immigrants chose to change their last names. Many English last names were used as boys' first names by parents who wanted to rid their sons of the stigma attached to new immigrants. These were used as both first and last names, and were particularly popular among Jewish families:
