Chapter 25: Demigod Magic
Previously:
Up here, she was a different kind of beautiful. More alive. Her dress still floated around her like smoke, but it was brightly colored. Her hair was lighter, almost golden, and her skin had a healthy amount of color to it. Out of all of it, her eyes were the most captivating. Being no longer washed out, they sparkled with many colors, which only made her smile look more mischievous.
"Would you join me for a picnic?" The goddess suddenly said. Before we had a chance to respond, we were sitting down on a red and white checkered blanket with a wicker basket and an assortment of foods surrounding us.
Harry woke up the morning Percy left on his quest feeling as close to freedom as he's ever felt in his life. There were no Dursleys, no chores, no detention, no nothing. It was glorious. There weren't even any dreams of Voldemort. Letting Penny teach him Occlumency was the best decision he'd ever made.
He, Ron, Hermione, and Ginny followed the campers of the Hecate cabin in their routine. Breakfast, then some quick combat training in the arena with the weapons they were given, and a Latin/ancient Greek lesson where they learned the basics. Currently they were in the room the Hecate children used to practice magic. This was something both wizards and demigods, were looking forward to. They grouped together around Lou Ellen, waiting excitedly for her to tell them what they were doing.
The demigod in question was bouncing on her toes and grinning madly. "Today, I've got a few options." she told them. "We can learn from our visitors, we can teach our visitors, or we can figure out how to put together each of our different, but similar types of magic."
Hermione let out an excited gasp. Harry figured he knew which one she would want to do. Ginny, however, frowned. "How would we try to put them together when we hardly know anything about the other?"
Hermione moved as if to put a hand over Ginny's mouth, but Lou Ellen nodded thoughtfully.
"You have a point." Lou Ellen said. "Okay, how about this? First, we teach you today. Then, once you have a grasp on our magic, you teach us. Then we find out how to put it together."
Hermione slumped, but said, "That makes sense."
"Perfect!" Lou Ellen said, clapping her hands. "First thing about demigod magic, is that we have the ability to manipulate what we call in this part of the world: the Mist. That is something that helps the mortals— or muggles—ignore our existence."
Ron's eyes widened. "Whoah! What we could do with that!"
Lou Ellen smirked. "This is basically bending reality kind of like how the reality stone did in the Marvel Universe."
"Huh?" Ron and Ginny said in unison.
Harry was almost as confused as them. He vaguely remembered bits and pieces of the Marvel Universe from Dudley's ramblings but he didn't remember everything.
"You can't make modern references to these three," Hermione said. "They don't know anything about what's going on in the muggle world. Harry might know the basics but nothing more."
"Well, we'll have to fix that this summer," Lou Ellen said as her siblings murmured in agreement. "Now, you need to be careful bending the Mist on some beings. It won't work for most magical persons, really powerful monsters, and even some demigods. Don't even bother trying on Percy; I tried that on him before he left camp and he caught me."
There were some snickers at that.
"She had cold showers for a week," someone whispered to Harry.
It took him a second to remember that Percy Weasley was also Percy Jackson, who could manipulate the water around him. And apparently, even the temperature. Harry made a mental note to stay away from any pranks the twins planned around Percy. He suddenly recalled the days after he learned about when they put dragon dung in his inbox before the World Quidditch Cup and how the twins complained about their shoes always being wet when they went outside even though it hadn't rained in almost a month. If he thought hard enough, he could see Percy's smug face when they went to tell Molly.
"Some demigods that are not children of Hecate can and do use the Mist to their advantage." Lou Ellen continued. "Hazel Lezveque and Thalia Grace both have the ability to use it. I think Thalia only really uses it to change a mortal's perspective on what happened or is happening but I digress. Monsters do have the ability as well to some extent. A monster's lair will be heavily guarded by the Mist to make you believe you are safe when you are really not. For example; does anyone remember Percy's story about meeting Medusa for the first time?"
"Oh, yeah!" Ron said excitedly. "He and Grover and..." he looked around awkwardly, clearing his throat "...someone else went in smelling food and dropped all caution and almost got turned to stone!"
"Yes," Lou Ellen looked shifted uncomfortably at the reminder of the third person on that quest. "Exactly. Now, we're going to break off into teams. I want each of our witches and wizards to pair with a demigod..."
The rest of the lesson went without too many hiccups. Unsurprisingly, Hermione had a harder time bending the Mist because of her fixed view on logic. Harry and Ron took to it like a fish to water. Ginny had a hard time at first but once she figured it out, she was almost as proficient as the boys. Lou Ellen was very proud of their progress and declared they could move onto the Greek runes they used the next day.
"Alright, everybody, that's enough for today!" Lou Ellen called from across the room. "We'll pick back up tomorrow. Let's head to lunch! We'll meet back at the arena after for some strength training then we'll review common monsters that demigods come across."
Lunch was an uneventful affair. If you call some girl named Clarisse showing up, riling the Ares table up and Hecate popping out of no where, 'uneventful'. Harry didn't really pay attention. He was too busy trying to read a book he found in the Hecate cabin on soul connections. He was hoping to find answers there about his connection with Voldemort. So far, nothing good but he wasn't giving up.
Hecate and Ron were chatting about Percy and Hogwarts. Harry caught a few phrases from their conversation. Apparently, she'd been here for a while already and was just hanging out with Chiron. Hermione had left to talk with a son of Athena about something. Ginny wandered over to the Ares cabin to see what the fuss was about. Leaving Harry to himself, peacefully reading a book.
He only wished it would happen more often at Hogwarts.
"You're Harry Potter, right?" A voice said to his left.
Harry's head snapped over to see a girl of about 8 years looking right at him as he hunched over the book. She had the darkest hair he'd ever seen, eyes that were almost golden, and the most adorable face he'd come across.
"Yeah." He answered. The usual tone of awe that would come with her question was not there. It seemed as though she'd only just learned his name. "What's your name?"
"Lilith," she said softly. "Daughter of Thanatos."
He raised his eyebrow. Wasn't that the god that Percy and Penny went to talk to? "Nice to meet you, Lilith." He said because he wasn't sure what to say.
"You bear my father's mark." She said calmly. "And you carry two souls."
Harry blinked. He was not prepared for that. "What?"
"Your soul is carrying another soul," Lilith said, as if she were speaking of the weather. "I wonder how father will deal with that and your mark at the same time."
"What is this mark you're talking about?" Harry asked.
"Your scar," she pointed. "It is there to show whatever role you were chosen for."
Harry was reminded of his own words. 'I am marked for death by death.' He sighed. "Right." He said, mournfully.
"Do not worry, Harry," Lilith said, patting his shoulder. "I'm sure Percy Jackson will figure out exactly what father meant by putting his mark on you."
"What about the other soul?" Harry asked.
"That too." Having seemingly said her piece, she wandered off.
Lunch was over pretty soon after that but Harry was making his way to the arena by himself. Ron had gone over with Hecate a while ago, and the girls were still chatting with their new friends. Harry would have tried hanging out with the people he had met but he was too immersed in his book and that strange conversation with Lilith to talk to them.
"Harry!" Ron's voice called him from the side of the arena. Harry could see Hecate walking off in the direction of the Big House. There were a ton of demigods on a free hour training around. It was almost pointless for Ron to call him over considering he was easy to spot with his red hair but apparently that wasn't the only reason he was calling him over.
"Ron?" Harry said. His best friend looked happy but also slightly worried.
"Percy ended having to go to the Underworld." Ron said. "He just IM'd me to tell me that."
"Are they alright?" Harry asked.
"Yeah," Ron said, his voice only wavering slightly. "They're fine now." He paused. "Depending on how their visit goes in the Underworld, they'll be fine after that, too."
Harry patted Ron uncomfortably on the shoulder. Ron was getting close with his older brother that wasn't technically his brother. He'd been spending a lot of time with him during the last days of the school year and during the first week of summer. Harry suspected that Percy was personally teaching him to sword fight but it looked like they wanted to keep it a secret for just the two of them. Harry could understand that, when he thought of a certain Molly Weasley.
Eventually the girls and the rest of the Hecate cabin joined them in the arena. Lou Ellen set them on some strength exercises with their weapons and left them to their own devices. There wasn't much you could teach in this class but form. She did walk around every so often to make sure they weren't going to damage their body in some way but for the most part, she left them alone.
Harry took this time to tell Ron and the girls about what happened to him during lunch with Lilith.
"What could she possibly have meant about the other soul?" Hermione said.
"I don't know," Harry said honestly. "I was hoping you would have some kind of an idea."
"Was there anything in the book you were reading that could be an answer?" Hermione asked.
Harry shook his head, frowning.
"Could it be something to do with the prophecy?" Ron asked. "What did it say again? The Dark Lord will mark him as his equal?"
None of them said anything but it made sense to Harry in some strange way. Hopefully Percy would have some answers when he got back. Whenever that was supposed to be.
The rest of the day Harry spent worrying about Percy and what information he would be bringing back with him. From the arena, to learning about monsters, to the lake where they learned how to use a canoe and finally to the stables where they met the famous Blackjack they'd heard so much about. All possibilities and probabilities made their way into Harry's mind for him to fret over.
What if Percy got eaten by Cerberus? What if Hades decided to lock him in a cell again? What if they had to leave Penny behind for some reason? What if Clarisse miraculously made Percy decide to stay at camp indefinitely?
Okay, that last one had no foundation whatsoever. Clarisse never once mentioned that she knew how the four of them got to camp or where Percy was. Or even that she intended to talk to him when he got back. But somehow, Harry found that something to worry about anyways.
Fortunately Conner and Grover kept them busy enough during their free hour that he didn't think too much on what if's. Otherwise he could add about a hundred more to that list.
Conner and Grover thought it would be a good idea to let them ride some of the pegasi in the stables. None of them even attempted to ride Blackjack. Apparently he hadn't let anyone ride him since Percy left camp. Ron was seen, however, talking to him from the doorway. Harry could only assume that he was promising to bring Percy to the stables to see him right when he got back. That made Blackjack huff and nuzzle his snout around the redhead in a weird horse hug.
No one acknowledged it, letting him bond with the pegasus that had bonded with his brother.
It was at dinner that Ron finally showed his own worries for Percy.
"It's been so long, he hasn't contacted us at all, do you think he's alright?" The group were sitting at the Poseidon table so they could talk without being interrupted. Conner and Grover had decided to join them.
"Calm down, Ron, I'm sure he's fine." Hermione said.
"Yeah, Ron," Grover said, though he sounded just as worried. "He's got Nico with him, and Penny. They'll be fine."
"You're right, you're right," Ron whispered into his untouched food. "But, what if—"
He was cut off as a big hole crumbled open in the middle of the pavilion. Stairs emerged from one end, leading down into the hole. Someone screamed, Harry thought it may have come from the Aphrodite table but he wasn't sure. It could have come from the Hermes table. They sat pretty close together.
No one had time to really panic because a familiar redhead, green eyed, Weasley boy popped into view. He was taking the steps two at a time, with Penny and Nico close behind him. It was the fourth figure emerging from the hole in the ground that threw everyone off.
"Percy!" Ron exclaimed in relief. He got up from his seat and rushed to hug him.
Harry let out a breath he didn't know he was holding and smiled. Finally.
"Daddy!" The voice of Lilith came from the other side of the pavilion. A shadowy figure that Harry could only assume was herself darted towards the fourth figure to emerge from the stairs.
