16.Pillar of the Vex
A bit of a fun fact: each of the Higher Species has a sort of distinct accent and/or sub form of Language. Here are some:
Watchers: Signage. Their verbal Language is very monotone, making it hard to spot emotions in their words at face value. Signage has more emotional cues, but still not much.
Listeners: Their version of Language is very tonal and sing-songy, kind of like Chinese.
Vexes: are known to shorten or even fully replace words using screeches (similar to how contractions work in English). To an untrained ear, they all sound the same but the length and pitch of the screech allows for a large vocabulary. Also since they naturally talk so high pitched, many players don't recognize they are actually talking even besides this.

"This is nice, this is nice." Cub sighed as he eased himself into the bath full of diamonds where Scar was already waiting for him. A Vex rested on the top of his head, not that he minded. It had been... actually, he lost count of how long it had been since the two of them had run away in front of the entire server without their notice at the end of the war. Nice thing about a server of nearly thirty people was that no one would notice if one or two just so happened to just slip away for awhile. Came in handy in times like these.
"You're telling me." Scar chuckled, taking ahold of one single diamond in favor of his half eaten slice of cake. "Just you... me... the diamonds... and cute little Allay here, the cutest Vex I've ever seen!" And even though that was enough for him, it had always been, he couldn't help but think of his family even in the midst of it. What would they say if they only knew? Even with the shrill joy of taking another diamond into his system, guilt lingered in the background.
With one look, Cub knew this. Even after all these years, remnants of their bond still lingered. And, of course, he felt the same tug in his conscience. "How about this: just one more hour. Then we wash up for a few days and go back; they won't even know." Because stopping immediately would be too much. Because he wanted one last taste of their fallen paradise built on lies with such a delectable taste of poison, and he knew Scar did too. And finally, because the next few days would be worse than the very depths of the Nether itself, but it was something they had to do in order to keep their secret.
The man in question only sighed, looked towards the giant window leading out into the golf course. The Vex was chittering against it now, but he barely heard it's protests. The course was the contribution that Cub brought to this retirement estate, saying that if nothing else, they could say it was a game they had made for the others. A lie to protect them from the truth.
Why did such terrible things seem so good? Even as hiding here for as long as they had, their relationships had begun to sour; they had been neglecting them. The lies they had been preparing only strained this further. Not quite enough for anyone else but them to notice, but that could easily change if they weren't careful. And so, Scar lifted up his plate with Cub, a toast that "And then never again" to the Vex's dismay. A lie to themselves, repeated two times over now. One they believed, because this time would be different though everything else stayed the same. Surely.

In the abandoned retirement home of the Convex was a single creature to remain: A simple Vex. It had tried its hardest to convince them to stay. To even have the single Vex as company, even if that meant it would be far from its species. It promised to have no tricks; not even breed. It would not possess; being with such incredible humans was enough to satisfy it. ... and maybe an occasional diamond for a snack if they chose to be kind.
It hadn't been enough to convince them. It was alone now, free to wander the halls of the build. As it fluttered about, it wished that one day, the Convex would return for it.
It should have bore no name, no Vex ever did. Yet for some reason, there was a name for it. The Esteemed Scar had given it to it: Allay.
Allay. Allay was its name. To be named was a gift of its very own. Perhaps it should have been satisfied with that, but Vexes were greedy and selfish creatures. It wanted to stay with the Convex.
Days began to turn into weeks which turned to months. The Vex chittered to itself through the nights not just out of instinct, but to try and keep itself company. For such a small creature, its lifespan only ten years, the months that had gone by was much more costly to it than a human's.
"I must find Convex. I must find Vexes." It would find itself repeating to itself over and over. The Convex, or one of its kind. Even so, it wouldn't wander far, awaiting its masters in case they returned. It's hope dwindled day by by day. Its constant buzz of talking slowed to an occasional chirp, then to nearly nothing at all.
At long last, Allay slowly lowered itself on top of a dresser. The oak no longer smelled like Cub. Even his scent had left this place. "I am alone. I will always be alone." It sung to itself, even the usually sing song gone. "Hive is gone. Convex is gone." It let itself phase through the dresser, finding the communicator that had been left there. Even though it was almost its size, it picked the machine up and clutched it to its chest. "I must find the hive." It decided, all the hope it had that the Convex would come back for it gone.
With one last hesitation, it pushed the drawer open and began navigating the interface. It took some time, but eventually, the portal to the Main Hub opened just as it wanted. It floated through and the portal closed, as though both it and the little Vex was never there in the first place.
♢💎♢
The Main Hub was a massive expanse, infinite as every world whose portal dotted the landscape. Billions of players, hybrids and Higher Species alike wandered through portal after portal. To the little Vex, it seemed as though chaotic as it was, everyone knew where they were going. Everyone but itself.
It searched and searched for another of its kind, but alas none came into view. Could one of those portals being holding a nest of Vexes? There was no way to tell...
It wandered for hours, everything beginning to all look the same. It tried to talk to people, asking for help, but they didn't seem to understand its Vexian Language. Many didn't even realize that it was speaking a compressive language at all, while the Higher Species perhaps just ignored it.
But at long last, something did. "A̶r̴e̴ ̵y̴o̷u̸ ̷l̸o̶s̴t̴,̵ ̴l̷i̵t̸t̴l̶e̴ ̸o̵n̵e̸?̸" They asked. "V̴e̶x̶e̴s̵ ̴s̵e̷l̵d̸o̴m̷ ̸t̶r̵a̸v̸e̴l̴ ̵a̴l̸o̶n̶e̸.̷" Its voice was distorted, broken.
"I... I am alone." Allay replied. It turned around slowly to face the creature that had spoken to it.
Like its voice, its body looked distorted. It stood as tall as a human, though a misty charcoal black acted as a skin color. Its seven pairs of wings had an insignia of a purple eye on each and every feather. In fact, all of its body had these eyes that almost looked drawn into its form. Inexplicably, the creature had no stomach, its chest floating above its groin.
Maybe Allay should have been off put by this, but what could it say? They both were broken creatures, missing things they so desperately needed. For as much it made sense for the creature covered in eyes to not have a core, it made sense that a hive mind was alone.
"W̷h̸y̷ ̴d̵o̵n̴'̶t̵ ̴y̷o̴u̷ ̷j̸o̷i̷n̴ ̵m̷e̶?̵" The larger creature asked, extending its clawed hand. It's palm had one single large eye engraved on it. And the Vex, who had nothing left to lose, nodded, flying over so it could rest on its palm. And so, the two would become one, two magics that should have clashed combining into something new, something stronger. Something better. And thus, the second pillar of the universe collapsed, not partially this time, but fully.
