Aizawa started the lesson by telling them they were going to do rescue training. The class buzzed with excitement, the students starting to whisper to each other about what they could be doing in whatever simulations they'd be going through.
Their homeroom teacher quieted them down and pushed a button to bring out their hero suits in reinforced cases with numbers on them. "It's your choice if you want to wear your hero costume. The training site is a bit remote, so we'll be going by bus. That's all." He dismissed them all to go change.

"Hey Fire-Fuck! What's with all those scars, huh?! You a thug or something?!" Bakugou stomped up to Rin while he was changing. Rin raised a brow in question. He wasn't really surprised Bakugou called attention to all of the scars leftover from fights covering Rin's body, but seriously, these were all results of the scrapes that had healed normally. If he had all the scars from wounds he'd gotten that required his healing, his body would probably be a patchwork of ugly, raised, and terribly healed scars. His knuckles would be super fucked up and gross too, given how many times he'd skinned the shit out of them and busted them open.
Granted, some of the scars he did have were pretty hard to miss, like the long one that went from his wrist to halfway up his forearm, but what was the point of asking?
It just seemed like a low blow to Rin. He had been discredited since the day he was born just based off his looks, he didn't give a shit about what others thought they could do to him. What mattered was what he could do to them. If Bakugou wanted a fight, Rin had no problem calling him out to fight somewhere the media couldn't see and ruin their reputations as upcoming heroes.
"No. The other kids around the place I grew up tended to try and fuck with the guy they thought winning a fight over would prove how cool they were." He answered simply.
Bakugou scoffed. "Yeah right! You probably got your ass kicked all the time for being a shitface! That's why there's nothing but baby cuts!"
Rin grabbed the hair at the back of Bakugou's head and slammed the bully's face into the locker next to his, making sure not to crush his nose into his skull.
"I haven't lost a fight since I was six. Think what you will, but you're definitely not the first person to try and make my reputation just as shitty as your own, so spare us all the drama and finish putting on your murder-gear, dipshit." He snarled. He was going to be a hero, he didn't need to take shit from people anymore. It was a new freedom he could definitely get used to.
Bakugou snarled and stepped back, away from the shorter male. He wouldn't have been able to move if Rin didn't want him to, but it was a blessing when Bakugou Katsuki wanted to stay away from you. He was annoying as shit.
"Man, that guy must feel seriously threatened by you, Okumura! He doesn't even do that to Todoroki!" Kirishima noticed, jerking a thumb at the quiet two-toned boy. Rin shrugged.
"I'm here to be a hero. Whatever he's here for doesn't exist unless it's villainy. You don't go to a hero school for validation, you go to a hero school to learn how to save people and help society stay balanced." He said.
"Dude." Sero said, staring at him. "Sometimes you've got some wise words to say, man."
"Just the truth. I've always thought it's better to face it head-on rather than run away, even if it sucks." Rin shrugged. Kirishima patted him on the shoulder fondly and went back to putting on the shoulder pieces to his hero costume.
They finished getting dressed and went to join their classmates by the bus.
§~•~§~•~§
Rin couldn't help but snicker at Iida's wasted effort when he realized what kind of bus they were riding in after he'd made everyone get into single-file lines.
"All that work for nothing." Mina giggled. Uraraka and Midoriya patted Iida on the back consolingly. Rin noticed that Midoriya was only wearing the school gym uniform, his black arm and leg braces, his red utility belt, and his trademark red shoes. His costume must not have been fixed yet after being torn to shreds by their resident class douchebag.
Rin sat next to Todoroki and behind Jirou and Bakugou and simply listened to the main conversation the rest of the class was having.
"Midoriya, I usually say what's on my mind." Tsuyu began. Then she compared his quirk to All Might's, which he flipped out about. Man, the guy probably thought All Might was their saviour or something. He acted like All Might was the second coming of Christ and sometimes it got really awkward and painful to watch. Rin wasn't aware he could cringe as hard as he had when he'd overheard some of Midoriya's fanboy ramblings about All Might.
Though, as much of a hardcore hero fanboy as Midoriya was, he was also very high-strung, awkward, and anxious. Rin could tell he'd definitely never had friends before highschool and was a social outcast before coming to U.A. Rin figured that was thanks to Bakugou(the class had discovered the two were "childhood friends" and Rin didn't buy it)and added that to the list of reasons of why he shouldn't associate himself with the explosive blonde and why he should try and be a good friend to Midoriya. Hopefully with good friends backing him up, he'd grow confident in himself and learn to speak up and stand up straight instead of slouching and hunching to make himself as small a target as possible. Rin himself still wasn't super social since gaining friends, but his remaining issues had to do with his biological parents and his quirk and those were both longer term problems than his anxiety over the impending revelation his friends would have one day that he really wasn't worth their time and effort. But he'd definitely changed a lot for the better between the start of middle school and the start of high school, so that was something.
Kirishima argued that Midoriya's quirk had a severe blowback and hurt him, which was different than All Might's.
"Not like my hardening," He said, pausing at Rin's snicker and throwing a knowing glare at his classmate. "I'm good in a fight, but it gets real boring."
Midoriya told him his quirk was still cool and that it could have many advantages in defensive and offensive battles and then devolved into his typical muttering(his analysis was amazing and a lot more interesting to listen to when it wasn't about All Might). Aoyama tried to join the conversation, but was quickly shot down by Mina. He pouted, looking away from the class and out the window. What was he looking at so intently?
"You wanna talk flashy and strong, that'd be Todoroki, Bakugou, and Okumura." Ashido pointed out. Rin felt a small pang of pride that he was mentioned as one of the strongest, though not so much flashy. People usually viewed him as a dangerous freak, so this was a pleasant turn of events.
"But Bakugou's so unhinged. He'd never be popular." Tsuyu noted.
Rin kicked the seat in front of him. "She's got you there, Bakugou." He grinned. The crazy blonde had already jumped up to yell at Tsuyu.
"WHAT'D YOU SAY, FROG-FACE?!"
"See?"
"We've only barely started socializing and already you've made it abundantly clear to us the unpleasantness of your steamed turd of a personality." Kaminari told him eloquently. The rest of the class nodded sagely.
"Yeah, okay Mr. Vocabulary. How bout I POUND YOU?!" Bakugou was getting ready to vault over the seat. Rin grabbed his belt and forced him back down in his seat, not even flinching at the explosions the teen set off in warning.
"You're gonna have to sit out on the assignment if you don't sit in your damn seat. You know Aizawa is strict." He hissed when Bakugou resisted. The explosive blonde settled for colorfully cursing him out instead. Rin growled in response and finally shut the blonde up. There was the growling out sentences that normal people did when they were irritated or trying to be threatening, and then there was the bone-rattling growl Rin could produce from deep in his chest, sounding similar to a predator. If it didn't scare you, it would at least shock you into stopping whatever you were doing. Suguro had told him his growl sounded like a cross between a tiger and a panther. He'd also noted that there had to be some sort of frequency the growl reached that triggered a fear response that had the people closest to him in vicinity freezing up instinctually.
He watched the five people closest to him in proximity freeze up before shaking it off. The rest of the class was dead silent for moment, staring at him with wide eyes. Then Kaminari grinned and reached out to playfully punch him in the arm.
"Dude! That's wicked!" He laughed in delight, which Rin figured meant he thought it was cool and not a villainous thing to do(he used to growl at people a lot as a little kid, but he'd had it trained and beaten out of him over the years, so now it was primarily used to shut people up).
"What a vulgar conversation." Momo frowned at the rest of the class.
"I think it's fun! I don't think your mouth could get any fouler, Bakugou!" Uraraka said cheerfully, joining in on the conversation.
§~•~§~•~§
They got to the training grounds only to realize it was the USJ. The space hero, Thirteen, greeted them and explained about their quirks and how some of them could easily kill. Rin shuddered at that line. He knew very well what his quirk could do-he'd had a front row seat to his adoptive father's demise at his biological father's hands, not to mention all the times kids and teachers alike had told Rin that he needed to stop being such a ruffian because his quirk was too dangerous for him to be around others.
Rin listened to rest of the speech intently and admired how Thirteen was good at wording things and explaining them well.
They were going to start the excersize and went inside the USJ, overlooking the plaza and all of the domes with different rescue environments in them. To their immediate right was the Storm/Downpour zone. Next to that one was the Flood zone, then the Conflagration zone, then the Mountain zone, the Landslide zone, and finally, the Collapsed Cityscape to the left of the entrance. Rin could manage in most of those aside from the downpour zone and the flood zone.
As soon as Aizawa went to tell them the rules of the rescue training, something wierd happened. It was like a shift in the atmosphere. It made the hair on Rin's arms stand up and his ears twitched. Before he could say anything to Aizawa about the wierd feeling, a swirling gate of purple opened up below them in front of the fountain at the center of the plaza. The students shifted nervously behind the two teachers and Midoriya started forward before being pushed back.
"Stay back! This is not part of the excersize, those are villains!" Aizawa commanded. "Stay together and don't move."
Stay together and don't move? The words from his teacher sent a chill traveling up Rin's spine.
Yaoyorozu turned to Thirteen urgently. "Thirteen, aren't there intruder sensors?" She wondered.
The hero nodded. "Of course there are! Someone must be jamming them."
"Are they only here, or also at the main building....? Either way, we can't call for help." Todoroki mused, blunt as always. "This is a place far from campus, where all the teachers are except for Thirteen and Aizawa. This was planned, so they have an objective. It's a well coordinated sneak attack."
"Thirteen, begin evacuation and try to call for help. Kaminari, try using your quirk to signal for help." Aizawa ordered, stepping forward and readying his capture weapon. Midoriya stepped forward to stop the teacher, but Aizawa assured the students he'd be fine. He knew his limits and his abilities.
Aizawa jumped over the railing and down to the plaza with a promise, "No good Hero is a one-trick pony."
It was the most badass thing Rin had ever seen and heard. Aizawa stuck a perfect landing and immediately started kicking ass.
A rough, shrill voice sounded in greeting from a man covered in hands, asking if All Might was there. Rin growled-that guy attracted too much attention! Another reason he wasn't Rin's favorite hero. Rin didn't hate him or anything, but while All Might got loads of positive attention, he also got plenty of bad attention as well. And since he was a teacher at U.A. now and that fact had been fucking broadcasted to the world, the man would probably bring trouble with him without meaning to.
"Fuck the top ten, Aizawa is my favorite Hero." Rin admitted. He got some affronted looks and a surprised one from Midoriya, but ignored them. They could idolize All Might all they wanted, but the Underground Heroes handled all the dirtiest work and kept it all in the shadows so as not to burden the public with the horrible things that happened in the dark. Rin had serious respect for Underground Heroes.
"This is no time for analysis, we have to evacuate!" Iida insisted while he pulled Midoriya away from his observation of their teacher fighting the villains, the class moving back towards the entrance of the USJ.
Unfortunately, the warp gate villain that had let in the crowd of villains Aizawa was currently pulverizing appeared in front of them, blocking them off. "I can't allow that." He rumbled, his deep voice echoing somehow.
"Greetings, we are the League of Villains." The warp gate greeted. "Forgive our audacity, but we've come to U.A. Highschool today to end the life of All Might, the Symbol of Peace."
Only Bakugou was enough of a moron to jump out and attack the warp gate villain, with Kirishima stupidly backing him up just as Thirteen had opened the fingertips of their hero suit, ready to suck the villain up and turn him to dust. Thirteen shouted at them to come back, but they had no time to do so as most of the students were covered in the villain's body in a large dome, leaving just a few students and Thirteen out.
§~•~§~•~§
Rin felt air rushing by him and looked around wildly. He appeared to be falling from the top of a dome that was pouring rain and blasting wind at him-the Storm zone.
Wonderful.
He could barely see anything through the heavy rain, but finally made out the silhouettes of buildings. He quickly tucked in his arms and legs and fell into a dive. When he was close enough, he slid down the side of the building nearest to him and braced for impact with the asphalt of the road.
Though he could sustain some fire in rain, it would be harder to keep up, and he could see villains creeping out from alleyways and buildings below.
Rin waited for the right moment, then gave a short blast of blue fire to break his fall and landed sprawled on his side in the middle of the road.
With a groan, the teen pushed himself up and began taking note of buildings and villains surrounding him. He was freezing and already soaked, and the wind was pushing at him from every direction non-stop. Thunder rumbling from very realistic-sounding loud speakers deafened him every couple minutes, flashes of fake lightning lighting the area up once in a while and giving Rin vertigo. He clenched this eyes closed and breathed in and out slowly, trying to focus his thoughts.
Okay. There were villains invading the USJ. The warp gate villain had obviously been tasked with separating and scattering the students. They put Rin in the downpour zone, where he was weakest. Did that mean they knew everyone's quirks? And they'd come to this place with a coordinated attack, so they knew the schedule, too. They were there for All Might, who hadn't come for whatever reason. That was bad for the class, because the villains probably wouldn't leave until they were forced to and the only people that could make them was Aizawa, who was pinned with fighting hordes of villains by himself, Thirteen, who was probably still pinned by the warp gate villain, and the inexperienced students if they could defeat all of the villains probably attacking them in each zone.
God, this situation looked bad. Really, really bad.
But Rin wasn't an untrained rookie. He knew how to fight with and without his quirk (perks of growing up in a trashy part of town-the cops were all either dirty or too lazy to do much more than give him a warning, take him home, and not even give a report, which was the only reason Rin's record was still clean). And his classmates had raw strength and power, at the least. Maybe they'd be okay?
Okay, Rin was the only person he knew that could take on multiple opponents at once, but even he couldn't take this many out(they were gathering around him slowly and cautiously, so maybe they didn't know the students' quirks?).
He took more deep breaths and did his best to not let the lightning flashes disorient him. He blinked a few times until his night vision finally kicked in in the dark cityscape. That was better. He could see somewhat clearer, though the wind and rain were still in his face and the thunder still deafened him every few minutes.
One of the villains finally charged, coming up to Rin with an attack of watery fists and Rin rushed forward, igniting his fire around his fists and meeting the villain halfway.
He ducked under the first swing and spun around, kicking the villain in the back and sending him sprawling. Another villain came at Rin and suffered the same defeat. The villains finally realized they could just gang up on him all at once and he cursed, dodging out of the way and running around the street while landing a few hits.
One of the villains caught his tail and he yelled as he was pulled back by it, boots slipping on the wet asphalt and working against him as he tried to escape. Normally, during the hero course training exercises and gym class, he had his tail tucked away or wrapped around his waist like a belt. It just have slipped free while he was disoriented and he'd been too distracted to notice.
Just when the villains were gaining the upper hand and pinning Rin to the ground, a loud screech resounded and Rin saw Tokoyami swoop in with Dark Shadow, wiping out the villains and pulling Rin away from them.
Rin grinned. "Thanks."
The boy nodded. "Don't mention it. There's plenty more where these came from, so I suggest we move fast and try to get back to the others quickly."
Rin nodded and suggested they run across the rooftops for a better advantage. Dark Shadow was strongest in the dark, so he should have enough strength to hurl Rin at the top of the dome and he could punch a hole in it for the to escape from.
Not the best plan, but it was something.
§~•~§~•~§
Midoriya, Tsuyu, and Mineta had made it out of the flood zone and made their way back to the central plaza to see if Aizawa needed help. Unfortunately, that gave them front row seats to watch their teacher get beaten to a bloody pulp in front of their eyes by the monstrous creature the head villain kept calling "Nomu."
When the warp gate guy-his name was Kurogiri-reported that one of the students escaped and would get help from the teachers at the main building, the hand man- Tomura Shigaraki-called for them to retreat.
"I have a bad feeling, Midoriya." Tsuyu whispered, drowning the Class Pervert in the water next to her. The green-haired boy agreed- this didn't feel right. They almost missed what Shigaraki said about leaving dead kids, right before he was in front of Tsuyu's face with a grimy hand about to cover it.
Midoriya felt his heart stop in his chest as his voice caught. He heard Tsuyu catch her breath too, eyes wide and unable to move fast enough out of the way of the villain who'd disintegrated their teacher's elbow in seconds. Midoriya couldn't even reach to pull the girl out of the way, there wasn't enough time!
But when Shigaraki touched Tsuyu's face, nothing happened.
The man chuckled. "You really are a cool hero." He said. The thing he called Nomu slammed Aizawa's face into the concrete, breaking the red-eyed stare that erased the Villain's quirk.
Midoriya prepared to use One for All on the man to save his friend. "Get off of her!!" He cried, swinging and landing a good hit. He thought he'd hit the hand-man, but he'd apparently hit the Nomu thing instead.
When did it....?
He barely had time to register that his arm wasn't broken or the fact that the Nomu took the hit without even flinching before Tsuyu yanked him out of the way with her tongue.
At that moment, the doors of the USJ burst open. All Might had made it before the other teachers!
"FEAR NOT! I....AM HERE!" His voice echoed across the open plaza and the students couldn't help but feel relief course through them. The Symbol of Peace was here to save them from this hell, finally!
All Might threw his yellow suit jacket aside and ripped his tie off. He wasn't smiling, instead turning a frown on the villains scattered around the Plaza and the unmoving Aizawa laying in a puddle of blood on the ground.
In a second, All Might bulldozed through all the small-time villains to retrieve Aizawa, than booked it over to the three students still in the water and put them all down at a safer distance with their teacher. He ordered them to get to the entrance and take Aizawa.
From there, they watched him fight head-to-head with the brain monster called Nomu. It was horrifying that something like that could match All Might's strength and speed.
Just as Midoriya decided to step in and help, Bakugou, Kirishima, and Todoroki had showed up as well.
Midoriya briefly wondered where Rin was, since he was usually lumped in with these guys, but dismissed it. They were still in the middle of battle.
§~•~§~•~§
Rin and Tokoyami were fighting the last of the villains in the Storm zone.
Rin was tired and his muscles ached since he'd been fighting mostly hand-to-hand the whole time.
His plan had been put on hold when they were met with enemies on the roof of the building they climbed and were forced to fight back-to-back.
His fire wasn't suited for this area, so he used the next best thing-his reflexes and the advantages he could get from his surroundings. The roof was slippery from the heavy rain, so he used it to slide around and blindside the villains by kicking water in their eyes. There was plenty of glass nearby from broken windows, so he kicked it up and the wind blew it in the enemies' faces, distracting them long enough for Rin to either plant a bigger piece of glass in one of their limbs and kick them away or for him to break a limb and throw them against the side of the building next to the one they'd climbed or through a window.
Right now, he was up against a villain who was irritatingly good at being unnerving.
"Hey, I think I know who your daddy is, kid! He said his youngest brats were going to a hero school but damn, I didn't know you made in with the big shots! I wonder what he'd think if I told him you're here! I could probably get some good cash for that information-HGHK!"
Rin jabbed the villain in the throat and spun around to deliver a hard roundhouse kick to his head and the villain crumpled to the ground.
Tokoyami finished off the last two villains and they stood there on the roof, both soaked and shivering and possibly contracting hypothermia. Rin couldn't summon any fire to warm them up. If he lost touch with heat for too long, he couldn't use the flames at all.
"Let's get out of here." He said. Dark Shadow swelled to wrap around Rin and launched him as hard as he could. Rin pulled his fist back and punched a hole through the dome's ceiling and he heard Dark Shadow screech as he made his way out too.
§~•~§~•~§
All Might freed himself from the grip of Nomu and got back on his feet. The monster was frozen halfway by Todoroki and they thought it was over for the thing. But they all looked on in horror and surprise as new muscles formed until the Nomu had it's arm and leg back. Bakugou kept Kurogiri pinned to the ground.
Before anyone could make a move, a solid black ball landed hard in the fountain, spraying water and chunks of concrete everywhere.
The darkness retreated quickly and Tokoyami and Rin sprang out of the ruined fountain basin, surveying the destroyed plaza around them.
"Wow, I expected things to be more desperate." Rin commented. Tokoyami nodded in agreement.
Rin's eyes looked over the villains, students, and the injured heroes around the Plaza before his eyes landed on Shigaraki. "Ah, there you are, hand-man. Your plan was to come here and just casually kill All Might, two other heroes, and twenty students and then waltz out, huh? That seems pretty ambitious for your first time being a real Supervillain." He snorted, walking towards the leader instead of away from him. Tokoyami backed away, retreating back with the other students and Thirteen.
"Who are you to talk so big, brat?" Shigaraki snapped.
"I'm a critique and I'm saying your little show sucks." With that, Rin launched himself at the villain. They tumbled and All Might had to resume his fight with the Nomu to keep it away from Midoriya, Bakugou Kirishima, and Todoroki all watching.
All Might didn't let the wound in his side reopened by the Nomu stop him-He flew to the Nomu and delivered a non-stop flurry of punches, all sounding like he was beating up a wall of solid meat. Rin caught the smell of blood in the air and figured even the Number 1 Hero could get injured even as powerful a the man was. He turned back to Shigaraki.
"Man, I kinda wish I didn't get so close, you smell exactly how you look, ugh." Rin wrinkled his nose as Shigaraki tried to grab him once more and got kicked in the ass when Rin dodged swiftly.
"Your quirk is activated by touch, but you're not very good at actual close combat, are you? That's a little sad, man." Rin ducked under a wide swing and landed a hard punch to Shigaraki's fragile ribs, feeling them crack under his fist. He picked the man up and threw him down on the concrete. He heard more ribs cracking as the villain wheezed.
"If you're gonna come in here with your own fancy title and a claim to All Might's head on a platter, you should at least be completely prepared. Making you look like even more of an idiot than you already did is way too easy." Rin taunted.
Shigaraki grabbed his ankle and the boot and suit rotted away quickly. It started working on Rin's skin, but he barely felt it, still cold and slowly getting his sense of touch back thanks to the Spring heat.
Rin stepped back and Shigaraki scrambled to stand, taking a loose stance that was way too open. Rin waited for Shigaraki to swipe at him, since the man seemed to be very impatient, and dodged.
Only, Shigaraki was learning and reached out to the side to grab Rin. One hand grabbed his side and the other grabbed his bicep, rotting the suit and skin away easily and exposing bright red muscle and blood. Rin clenched his teeth at the mild sting of pain he felt in his still-cold limb and caught Shigaraki in the crotch with his knee, backing away and kicking the man in his stomach.
"Okumura, we gotta go!" Kirishima called. Rin nodded and turned to join his classmates, but didn't make it far.
Shigaraki got ahold of his tail and yanked the boy back, grabbing a horn to pull him back further. He wrapped his arms around Rin and held him against his frail body, disintegrating wherever his hands touched.
This was a bad situation to be in and Rin had willingly put himself in it.
Shit.
