Chapter 5 : shadows
Shadows
A member of the dark
Lurks in light
While nobody expects a thing
They think it's just their own
But the watch.
They listen.
They wait for the right moment.
They wait for the moment to strike.
They wait for the moment to KILL.
This place feels... off.
I don't mean to be rude about it or anything, because they are giving me a home, but jeez, it's like these people have never seen a zombie. Let alone a mutant. Whatever. It's just... strange.... because they are happy. And I'm not saying that is a bad thing, either. It just doesn't feel right. I'm a part of a scavenger group now, and we are just about to head out...
"Hey! Wakey wakey. It's time." I hear a female voice say.
"H... huh..." I stammer sleepily.
"We are about to head out. You know. So we actually have recourses." She says.
"I'm waking up, Ashley." I say.
"Good." She says.
"Alright, seeing that you lived in the city on you're own for so long, you are our map. Where are we heading?" She asks.
"Well, the place I lived was full of food, lumber, everything. There were just a lot of walkers, and mutants." I say.
"Wait... mutants? I just thought there were walkers. Same did the rest of us here." She says with a worried tone in her voice.
"Oh. I can take them out with ease. Just remember this. Bloaters explode when they die, so stay as far away as possible from them. Hurlers puke toxic acid, so keep running in random paths, and jaggedly. The next one is the big ones. They are juggernauts. If you can, avoid them. If not, run. Then there are great ones. They are the most powerful. They are actually very smart, and have abilities that people dream of having. And on top of that, they also have extreme strength. There are also the runners, which run fast. And the jockeys. They jump up on their victims and attack them. Only someone else can kill them while they are latched on, because their weak point is their back. Bloaters are fat. Hens the name, bloaters. Hurlers have huge sacks on their neck. Jockeys have one arm that is absolutely massive. Big ones have grotesquely huge arms, and look very muscular. Great ones... well.... can look very different from each other. I saw one that looked human still." I tell her.
"That's a lot of information... good thing I have you around." She jokes. "Alright. Let's go."
"Agreed." I say.
We just left the building.
"Alright, where do we go?" Ashely asks.
"Well, which way did you come from to get back when we met?" I ask.
"South east it is." She said.
*a couple hours later*
"Here we are!" I say excitedly, drawing out my knife.
"Wait, why are you pulling that out?" She asks, readying her pistol.
"Oh, because I see a big one. A little bit to the right." I respond. Sounding cocky, as usual. "I'll handle it."
"Wait, didn't you say that we should avoid them at all times?" She asks. I'm starting to realize that these people ask a LOT of questions.
"I know we should. It doesn't mean I will." I say arrogantly. I run towards it. Her name was crystal thine. She seemed nice. She died because a friend of hers threw her into a horde of walkers. That's a good friend she had. Whatever. I slice at it's one hulking arm then jump over it. It tries to grab me, but fails. I continually stab it in the back so it's immobilized. It also just let out an ear piercing roar. And I stab it in the head, finishing her off.
"Well, that was a bit much." Ashley stated. I could tell by her voice she wasn't expecting that to happen.
"It was necessary unless you wanted to die." I respond. I wasn't lying about that.
"Ok..." She says with a worried tone.
"Wait... be quiet." I whisper.
"What are yo..."
"Quiet." I cut her off. "There is one type of zombie I didn't tell you about, because I have only ever seen it once. It responds to movement and noise. If it sees us, it has the combined power of 10 great ones... so be very quiet. I call these the shadows." I whisper as it looks and stares in our direction. It's blood red eyes seemingly staring right into my soul. And I realize, it knows I'm here. It also knows who I am. It also knows what I am. And it leaves. Just like that.
"Is it gone?" Ashley whispers as she saw me loosen up, and relax.
"Yeah... Let's just get all the crap we can from here. And leave." I say.
