Build-Up for Nothing

Catherine did not end up doing anything risky whatsoever. Instead, she just got out her homework, finished it, then headed to bed early. She couldn't stand to stay awake for another minute. She was just too bored for the world of the woken. So she figured that going to sleep was the solution to her problem; and so she went through with it.

The next morning, Catherine had lost her appetite. Because she went to bed earlier than usual, she had missed dinner. But when she woke up, she was not hungry, so therefore she didn't have breakfast. Catherine woke up, got dressed, and then went straight to school. She was antsy to meet Aaron again. She was in so much of a rush that she arrived at school 15 minutes before she usually would.

"Miss. Hunter, it's a surprise to see you here so early."

Catherine's mathematics teacher exclaimed as she approached her; after noticing Catherine wandering the empty halls of the school.

"Indeed. Before, I had never been here this early."

Catherine responded to her teacher Ms. Tiyes whom stood before her.

"Any reason in particular?"

Ms. Tiyes questioned.

"Just a bit anxious to see this new boy I met yesterday, out in the yard."

"Ah, I see! It's always wonderful making new friends, isn't it?"

"Very. By the way, would you be able to help me out with question number three that you assigned for homework yesterday? I didn't quite understand what I was supposed to do with the x and the y."

"Well, that is absolutely alright. I'll cover that question today in class."

"Thank you."

"No problem at all, my dear. I've better get going now, I'll see you in class later."

"Alright. Have a great day, Ms. Tiyes."

Catherine smiled and waved as her teacher walked away. She looked at her watch. It was 8:57am. She had eight minutes left to kill before the morning bell rang. "Might as well just go to class then", she thought as she began to walk to her first class — science. Catherine walked alone down the empty halls of her school. She was bored. Now that she just realized it, she had always been bored. Nothing interesting ever happened at this damn school. She just wanted to get out. Suddenly-

"Aaron!"

She exclaimed as she saw Aaron down the hall, walking away from her. Aaron turned around and looked at her, surprised.

"C-Cece."

He stuttered back at her. Catherine skipped down the hall and stopped before Aaron.

"Hey..."

She hummed. Now that she could see him again, she didn't quite know what to say.

"G'day."

He replied, shyly.

"How are you liking it here?"

Catherine began.

"Where?"

"In our town."

"Oh... the p-people here are n-n-nice. Way nicer than the ones back in O-Oxford."

"Yeah, us people here are pretty swell, I guess."

"Indeed... How was your night- I-I mean like when you got home!"

"It was okay. I was pretty bored though."

"I see, I was too."

"No way! Twins!"

Catherine shouted out. Aaron looked at her confusingly.

"What?"

"Never you mind. That's just an expression here. Just means that we've got somethin' in common."

"Oh... I understand."

He really didn't understand, whatsoever.

"I was going to see if you wanted to play, but I didn't have your number."

Catherine stated. Aaron looked up at her quickly, then looked back down at his shoes feeling flustered.

"R-Really, you wanted to play with me?"

"Of course! You're a golly ol' guy. I don't know why, but I feel like we're going to be great friends."

"I feel so too."

Aaron grabbed a notepad and a pen, out from his knapsack, then began writing out his phone number on it. He then proceeded to give it to Catherine.

"Here; so next time you're feeling a bit dull, you can call me and we can figure something out."

He said, with a weary smile. Catherine looked down at the paper and smiled.

"Thanks!"

"You're welcome."

Aaron proceeded to smile back at her. The school bell rang, startling the both of them. They looked at each other.

"So, I guess I'll see you at recess then..."

Catherine hummed sadly. Aaron nodded in agreement.
