51: TESTAMENT.
I dare you to comment on each paragraph. I love you❤
KANO STATE NIGERIA.
Amirah made her way into their bureau with one thing in mind and a goal, to talk to Imad today or it is never. She's come super early too so she decided to do some cleaning around the office before Imad arrives. She tied her head tie around her head to not obstruct her view and started working, not once stopping to check anything else. As she was cleaning Imad's table, a paper fell out and landed on the floor so she took it to place it back on the table only to halt.
There is a hospital name at the top and it is none other than their family hospital so she stopped and curiously check what it is. And then there is Imad's name sprawled there, it got her more curious than ever. They said curiosity killed the cat, she doesn't care whether it kills her. She's been wanting to find out what was wrong with Imad ever since he talked about some illness days before. This is her chance to snoop and see what is there and what is wrong with him.
She was about to start reading when she decided against that, he might come in any moment and she will be caught in the act. So she brought her phone and took quick photo of the medical record to read later then place it back where it was and continue working though her mind is more focused on what she's captured in her phone. She is finally going to see what has happened to him years ago when she left. Maybe they went through something similar?
The work is now done and the whole bureau is burnishing, she made it back to her desk and sat down adjusting her veil and taking deep breaths. After she's sure she looks as presentable as she walked in, she removed her phone from the pocket on her shirt to read only for Imad to barged inside with a scowl on his face and automatically, her brows rose in question of what got his mood ruined so early in the morning. The man has always been incorrigible.
As far as she knows, nothing happened in the palace the night before after the lunch with Usayma and the female royals. He was present and she got to see his genuine laugh -after so many decaded- as he talked to his sisters in-law, mother and sister. He looked so carefree, not like the sinister man she talks to in the office or the aloof CFO. Sadly, she enjoyed watching him all happy and merry with his family only to snap out of it in annoyance.
She is not getting over him, she is just falling more in love with him!
Annihilating that aside as not important, she stood up and greeted. "Good morning, Sir."
"Morning." He grumbled out, sitting down on the colossal chair behind the equally enormous desk.
Seeing as his mood is totally raucous and not the exact time she wants to talk to him about their past, she sat down and waited for him to haul her work at her.
After thirty minutes of him typing furiously on the keyboard without talking to her, she got fed up with his grumpiness and almost call him out on it only to stop last minute. If she wants to talk to him, it's going to be in that third person point of view she's used to get him last time. Maybe that will work again this time around if her mascot is with her.
"Sir, can I talk to you about your ex-wife?" Her question was bold and filled with confidence, his head whipped up to look at her in annoyance but also intrigue.
He then narrowed his eyes, seeing as she didn't even bother standing up from her desk to talk to him this time around. Is she starting to disrespect him now because he's given her one chance to talk to him about their past? This brat won't ever change. She's always been like that, get too comfortable when everything gets supine and relaxed. He is curious, he could turn down her offer because of it.
His back lay supine behind the lush chair, he accessed her. "You seem obsessed with my ex wife, Ms. Adam."
Amirah was taken aback but schooled her expression again and gave a kind smile before standing up, rounding her desk to sit on the chair in front of him. Even the way she walks with this gait and presumptuousness had him questioning her motives for the day. She is not the usual Amirah he's been working with, she is changed.
Today, she won't cry in front of this man neither would she permit him to break her. She's been thinking about how to approach the matter the whole night so he won't intimidate her today. She's vowed and cried all the night, so when morning arrives, she won't be able to cry and the tears will be dried up by then. If it was that easy!
She shrugged, the smile intact. "What can I say? Your ex wife seems intriguing to me. I want to find out more. Don't you?"
He shook his head, she got really good at that game with him. He'd be damned if he says he doesn't enjoy it. "Nope, I've explored her enough to know what kind of a woman she is. You are free to delve in too, just not too deep or get hurt."
Amirah laughed though all she wants to do is yell at him for having such bad image of her. She bit her lip, forcing herself to be strong for Nazir and their growing mellifluous relationship. Imad won't keep getting to her like that while she acts like a cry baby in front of him. He does not deserve a single tear that had ever left her face. Nazir had rebuilt her maverick and it is now pinnacled, high above his own ego and aristocratic blue blood running in his veins.
"I would love to delve deep, Sir and I'm sure I'll be alright." She eloquently spoke and smiled again, touching her wrists in that nervous way but she took the wrist down so he won't see the act, he knows her too much to know when she is nervous.
He shrugged indifferently. "Do as you see fit, Ms. Adam."
Done with beating around the bush, she delved. "I want to tell you about her past and the reason she did what she did and more secrets. Do you want to know?" She inclined her head, extricating the constricting hold she has on her poor wrist.
Imad narrowed his eyes again, the game is going where he does not want it to. She think she will play this prank on him? Is he dumb?
"How about a no, Ms. Adam? I've told you before and I'm telling you now, I don't want anything that has to do with my past with her. Everything that has happened is just a beautiful and haunting memory, it is alright now though." She could see from his expression that he is holding back from fulminating.
"I don't understand how you can move on without finding out the truth, Sir. Ninety and nine percent of people in your shoes would want to find out what has happened but not you. I don't understand why?" She looks intrigued in this act of third person that she sounds like another person.
His smile is chilling, freezing her blood from rushing through her veins and arteries. "Because I have planned so much for her in the future, she shouldn't worry much about the past now and rather..." He leaned closer to her on the desk, his palms flat on the smooth oak, "...worry about what the future has in store for her." He leaned back with a satanic smile on his lips again.
She visibly shivered, all the sheaf of certainty and self assurance flying out the window. There is no way she wouldn't be afraid of that smile that promised harangue, destruction, deflagration and denunciation, all in her account. And she thought the guy forgot about their past and has moved on. So he was planning something sinister and ominous all along? And from the looks of it, it is not euthanasia!
Seeing her reaction, he bellowed out another guffaw, opposite the one she's fallen for the day before. This one is filled with misfortune and promise to diagnose her with ciguatera. "Don't be too shocked, Ms. Adam, I'm just repaying the favour. Don't you think I deserve that little after all I've been through? Tell me honestly."
Out of her catatonic state, she swallowed the colossal lump that is corrosively quaffing her confidence. "You do deserve it if you won't listen to the truth, but if you will do what is right, then listen to the story behind your failed marriage first. That is my advice to you, Sir but whatever you do is good too."
"That's the spirit!" He gave her the same look too and she wanted to bang his head, hard on the burnishing desk in front of them. The man is a freaking lunatic, she doesn't know what she's seen in him to have fallen in love with him!
The next news needs so much courage and competency, so she gathered all the vigor and dominion in her. Her breathing yawed back to the normal steady pace she's been asked to always regulate. Her spine ached behind her, standing supine and straight, where it should be. Muscles are relaxed and almost slothful, the lightness descended on her chest too and she felt a sense of calmness and ease. A smile took over her face too, this is what she's been wanting to do since the day before yesterday.
She leaned closer to the desk, the way he did earlier to intimidate her, tilted her head back a little as if to summon more sinew. Her recently cut nails -her lunula almost taking off half the nails- and lean fingers drummed against the table.
Imad found those moves too bold for someone willing to do anything to get back with him and talk about their past to justify something she has no jurisdiction over. It irked him that she has something powerful to say that will throw him off but he waited. Or has she given up already? Darn, he wanted her to chase for a while!
"Your loss then, Sir. Because..." She shrugged, "...she is getting married in a month and you are invited as the guest of honour. You will get the first card as soon as it is printed." She stood up after galvanising him on his chair, thoroughly satisfied by his reaction.
He knew the news is coming but not this fast! Has the guy made his move already or is this another man? What the hell? Everything happened right under his nose and he didn't find a thing out till now?
But why the hell was she trying to get back with him a few days back if she's been engaged? Or was this Jalo guy too eager and set the date early? His hands clenched in a fist, annoyed and angry with himself but all he wants to do is wring Amirah's neck with his bare hands see her genuflect in front of him. God, he is going crazy with these mindless thoughts marring his head.
How did that happen without his knowledge? He's been keeping damn tabs on each of the guy's moves.
He stood up abruptly and left the office without saying a thing and Amirah only drop her head on the desk and cry her heart out. There is no chance of her getting back with Imad, it is all over!
*~*
It is time for Amirah to pack up and leave the office but Imad is still not back yet, she went ahead and signed out. Her eyes are bloodshot so she made her way to Lateefa's office to get some of her makeup and close all those spots or get weird stares from the people around her. They can gossip for the universe.
She is going to meet her future in-laws in a few minutes and can't go looking like someone has been beating her with a cable the whole morning. Questions will rise and Nazir will immediately know what has happened.
Lateefa commented as soon as she saw her walking in. "Girl, you look like hell! How about the lunch date with your sisters in-law?"
Amirah sighed, keeping her own small bag on the table and made her way to Lateefa's Michael Kors' to rummage. "I'm still going. At this point, I'm sure there is nothing that will ever happen between me and Imad. The man is stupid, an idiot, useless imbecile too!" She's never insulted him even mentally but she cannot help it now. He's gotten underneath her skin, he still likes her.
There is no way him leaving the office have nothing to do with her upcoming connubial, he is just too recalcitrant to bow his head and capitulate already. How can someone's pride be bigger than Mount Everest? Seriously, he's surpassed everything she's thought about.
"Go girl, throw him in the gutter and move on." Lateefa cheered with a wide smile, already rooting for the tall handsome attorney for her friend. She's given up on Imad long before, she cannot stress herself and her friend too. "But right now, you look like a wraith and we should change that."
In a few minutes, she looks more than sophisticated to go see her sisters in-law. Wearing wine handkerchief skirt, jet black dress shirt and new matching loafers she bought from her neighbour at a very cheap price -Afaf said it does not have any quality because of the price but she didn't care. The dark veil is also wrapped in Turkish style by Lateefa. She agreed to everything she did because she doesn't want to go to her sisters in-law looking like a homeless woman though she is one. She wants to look presentable enough to show them that she could fit right in hence agreed to borrow Husna's skirt and veil.
"Okurr, no one is better than my baby!" Lateefa took a quick video of her, hollering and laughing to the camera which elicited one from Amirah.
She loves Lateefa to death, the lady just knows how to deal with every situation.
"Another party without me?" Kamilah walked in and pouted when she saw the duo. They've been awfully close with one another now but she is not complaining, Amirah is getting out of her shell and joined Lateefah.
"No, but bye bye. I need to go, I'll call you both." She hugged them both twice and rush out of the room answering Nazir and telling him she will be down in a minute.
He told her about the date he's set up with his sisters yesterday and asked if she was okay with it. She wanted to say no but then he told her they were going to get married in a month and his mother have no problem with them in penury so the least she could do is agree to meet his sisters. She first thought a month is short but Afaf talked some sense into her and she agreed to her hundred percent.
"We are not going to do anything, Amirah. We might as well let them do what they want with the date. You don't plan on running away or doing something, do you?" Not waiting for her reply, she rambled on. "Just get married and show Imad that he is not part of your life anymore and you can move it perfectly. Move on with you life and enjoy this marriage the best you can. This man clearly likes you and he is way more mature than Imad, so this is also a score. You can fall in love with him, just decompose Imad from your life and see magic."
And now she is about to meet the three younger female siblings he has. He said they couldn't wait to meet her, it made her chest bloom with unease but also anticipation.
"Calm down, Amirah." Nazir laughed as they trudged into the bakery, she is nervously wringing her hands around again.
Her heart dropped when she sighted one of the girls sitting on the table Nazir is leading her to. She couldn't believe she is seeing that person but there she is looking at her with equally galvanised expression that Amirah wanted to turn back and rush out of there but she cannot. She needs to do something and that too really quick, but how?
