Chapter Two
I was already exhausted because of the last two hour practice of march past and now my head ached because of the thoughts running in my mind and lack of sleep; while the guy standing in front of me was waiting desperately for an answer.
Well, telling my name wasn't a big deal and for some reason unknown to me, I felt like I could trust him. What could he do with my name, after all?
"Tanvi," I spoke.
His lips slowly turned into a smile, "Full name, please?" He asked.
"Tanvi Kapoor," I said.
He just smiled and gave a small nod to me before pulling out his hand, offering me to shake. He was strange but his smile was oddly comforting, considering it was adorable.
"Well, I'm Viren Sharma," he said at the same time we shook hands and I gave him a small smile.
"What is it with stalking everywhere, first at canteen and now here?" I asked out of curiosity.
He chuckled which made me frown, "Tanvi, I wasn't stalking you. I was just curious to know your name because I haven't seen you before here. Are you new to the school?" He asked casually.
He had to be kidding me, right? Was I that invisible to everyone? I've been in this school since kindergarten and then people ask me such questions, it sure as hell hurts my ego.
"No, I'm not new here. Maybe, I should be asking you the same question. which batch do you belong to anyway?" I questioned him.
"Same as yours," he winked.
Before I could question him anything further, Shanaya appeared on my side, "Tanvi, we're gonna be late for the class," she said, but then her eyes wondered to Viren and she excused herself.
"So I'll see you around?" Viren spoke, making it sound like a question, as if he wasn't sure I would be interested to talk to him in future or not.
"Yeah sure," I said with a smile and left. I was no one to judge him from the short conversation we had, and I was not a rudeass bitch who liked to ignore people without having a real reason and most of all, I liked making new friends.
"So, who was that guy?" Shanaya asked as we were walking back to the classroom.
"I don't know," I stated honestly.
"What do you mean you don't know?" She asked, confusion clear in her voice.
"I just met him," I answered which in return got suspicious looks from Shanaya.
During all the conversation Varnika was quiet, but she listened to everything and had some curious expression on her face.
"What did he want?" Shanaya questioned again. At times she sounded so much like my mother who just kept asking one question after another.
"God, he just wanted to know my name Shanaya. Chill out, nothing serious!" I replied.
As much as I knew, this girl would be having so many assumptions in her mind right now but I wanted her to clear them out.
"Seriously, Viren wanted to know your name? I mean, why did he ask that?" Varnika started popping up her questions out of nowhere.
"Do you know him?" I asked out of curiosity rather than answering her questions.
"Yes, we used to be in the same class earlier. He's a nice guy," she said while smiling dreamily to which I nodded.
The rest of the classes went slowly and I was relieved when the bell rang after the last period, which meant school was over. I collected my things and quickly made my way out of the classroom. I was rushing towards the main school exit when I accidentally bumped into someone.
"Sorry," I murmured and looked up to see a pair of brown eyes pouring down into mine.
The guy standing in front of me was taller than me, maybe 5'7 I guess since I was 5'3, he had black hair that were messed up and covered half of his forehead. I noticed there was a smug look on his face and that's when I realized I was probably staring at the guy for more than a minute.
I bent down to pick up the things that had fallen down, and most of them were his. I was shocked when I realized someone bent down with me to help me but it wasn't the same guy. Instead, it was Viren. He picked up everything and handed it to me.
"These are not mine, it's his," I said pointing to the guy who was still smirking which was kind of unnerving, to be honest but I gave the things to the guy and mouthed a "Thank you!" to Viren.
He just simply nodded and I got out of the school building.
Shanaya was supposed to meet me near the school gate but she was nowhere to be seen. My last class was of economics and she took history and that was the only class where we didn't accompany each other.
I spotted Shanaya and waved at her, she had a beauty you could recognise from distance.
She was fair, not pale but more like creamy skim. Her dark brown hair fell a bit below her shoulder and in her own way, she was beautiful. Shanaya was more than a friend to me, rather she was like a sister and I could never afford to lose a pretty soul like her.
On Shanaya's side was Varnika, who had a bit dark skin but may I add, it actually suited her. Her black straight hair fell till her waist and she walked with a confidence like she owned the world and she did have a smile that caught heart of many boys. She had a bitchy attitude towards many, but besides that she was a sweetheart, you could count on her and she'll be there for you the moment you need a friend.
"Hey," both of them said together as they approached me.
"Hi," I said.
We started to walk towards our cabs. None one of us started any conversation so it was a basically a silent walk.
Varnika's elbow nudged mine, "Hey look there's Viren," she said to me while pointing her finger out in a direction where Viren and his friends were. I noticed the guy I just stumbled across was accompanying them.
But why was Varnika pointing it out? I looked at her in confusion and noticed Shanaya giving her the same look.
"What?" Shanaya and I said at the same time which caught Varnika's attention and she took a look at our baffled expressions.
She took ahold of Shanaya's wrist, "C'mon let's go and ask him what did he had to do with her name," she said. She had a look on her face that a child has when he is too close to solving a puzzle.
Without giving me a second to protest, she made her way towards the group of guys and Shanaya followed behind her since Varnika's hand was tightly gripping her wrist, leaving her with no other choice.
Varnika was totally unpredictable, what the hell was she going to do now? I felt the anxiety rising within me when I saw two of them approach Viren and I noticed it was only Varnika that was continuously speaking something but I couldn't make out her words. At that moment, I cursed myself for being bad at lip reading.
Viren took a look towards me and gave a small smile before speaking something to both of them. From the distance, it appeared like he was explaining something to two of them and the real shock was when Shanaya interrupted in whatever he was speaking. Shanaya was a girl who minded only her business and didn't speak up much in the useless matters especially like these.
I noticed that the guy, whose name I still didn't know gave me a look which made me think something wrong was going to happen, so without giving it a second thought I made my way towards them and interrupted their conversation.
"What's going on?" I asked.
"Nothing much, your friends were asking me few questions and I was clearing them out," Viren spoke, which was a bit unexpected since I thought it would be either Shanaya or Varnika who would reply.
"And this totally new friend of yours had few misconceptions about you, which I cleared out," Shanaya said glaring at Viren who just shrugged in return.
"I didn't mean to hurt anyone's feelings over here. I'm sorry if I did but I was just stating the truth," he said with a sad smile on his face.
I took a look at Varnika who had a look of hurt on her face, but I couldn't figure out what hurt her. All of this felt just so much messed up that it worsened my headache.
I wanted someone to explain me what Shanaya and Viren were arguing about, but no one seemed willing to help.
"Will someone explain me what is going on here?" I asked looking at each one of them.
"May I have the privilege?" The anonymous guy interrupted which was unexpected.
"Karan, let me explain this," Viren said.
Karan. Nice name!
"You guys decide which one of you want to speak and please go on," I snapped, getting irritated with this situation which was totally useless and this wouldn't even be happening if Varnika didn't have her own plans in mind.
"Long story short, Viren is kind of interested in you. He had no bad intentions, he just wanted to know you a bit and wanted to be your friend. He was explaining your friends not to tell you this but Shanaya, I guess that's her name asked him to back off," Karan explained and my jaw was hung open.
Talk about surprise.
Shanaya knew, I wasn't interested in relationship stuff and those boys pissed me off who offered friendship only because they wanted more out of it. Viren was that guy now and though I thought he was nice, I was wrong to assume that.
It's kind of weird how in a day you make a new friend and before twenty four hours you lose them.
I didn't say anything which was enough for Shanaya to know that I agreed with her and without a word, Shanaya and I left while Varnika stayed there mumbling something to Viren.
In that moment, only one thing made sense, she liked him.
