The Orphan Twins (1)
It was raining. Thick, dark clouds had rolled in and covered the once baby blue sky like a quilted blanket. The rain fell in sheets, it was quite a task all on its own to try to see anything ahead of you.
It was the most appropriate weather for the day's events, my father's funeral.
I could never remember what happened to him. Or my mother. But I did know just one thing, it was just my sister and I, alone, in a world where there is no hope for the living and death is considered the greatest of mercy.
You would think that two kids like us could find a home easily with some relatives, yeah? Well, it wasn't so easy as you would think. Being young, somewhat uneducated girls from a poor family like mine our "rich" side of the family wouldn't take us in. We were useless to them. We couldn't carry on their family names. So, since we had no family the local orphanage took us in. I was 6 years old along with my sister. When we would ask the headmistress what happened later on she would always dismiss us or say that she would tell us when we were older or something like that. My sister always bought the excuses but I didn't. Those empty words never sat right with me and I was going to find out why. My name is Elizabeth Harknett and I was going to solve the murder of my father.
