Moment of Truth
Many days past, which became weeks and soon become months. Every other week the handsome young man came to visit to check on my progress. He was so charismatic, so caring, so enlightened of the world around him. Before I knew it I was falling for a man I barely even knew.
Even though every time the man came to visit I would give him a smile and say "all is well" alas, it was not. His heart...was truly beyond repair. No matter what I tried, his heart just wouldn't come back to life, never glowing its faint glow red that gave a warm aura filling one with life and love.
So, after many attempts and much debate, the night before the wedding finally arrived. One last time, the bell atop the door rang, "hello Heartmaker," rang his gentle voice. "Good evening my dear friend! How do you do?" I would ask just like every other time he would make an appearance. "I am well, how is my heart?" He asked, and before long I set a glowing, fully functioning heart on the table. It was warm and inviting, resonating with the kind young man. He carefully grasped it in his hands and a smile of love and warmth grew across his face and his eyes lit up with hope. "Thank you! Oh dear Heartmaker thank you!" He ran around behind the counter and gave me an embrace I would never forget. "You are truly a savior, how could I ever..?" I shook my head to his kind words and smiled, "free of charge. Just be happy for me. That is all I ask." He nods and pulls me in to one last embrace. When we parted, he started for the door. I knew I would never see him again after this, or my heart.
He looked back one last time and smiled saying thank you and walked out. I waved goodbye and smiled as genuine as I could before falling into my chair once more, sighing.
After a few moments the little girl in the red cloak came in soon after, "what is it my little apprentice?" I inquired her in a gentle voice. She looked at me with concern in her eyes. "Is all well Master Maker?" She asked me in her sweet voice. I faked a smile as best I could but she saw right through it. Handing me her basket full of hearts she said, "here, try one of mine! I made them myself." Her innocence made me grin. "Don't worry innocent one, I will be fine." I paused for a moment, looking back to my work table with the original heart laying quiet and hidden. At that moment, my eyes widen. For the once dead heart that lay on the table began to glow once more...
