3.
My new quarters are not much better. The only update is a small cot and a private hall for myself. I still plan to find my way out and in doing so I need to get close to the beast.
Every morning I'm served breakfast and a black rose. I also receive lunch as well as dinner. I've lost track of the days, and although it feels like years have passed I think it's only been a few short weeks. Today as my lunch is set in front of me something is different. An envelope addressed to the human sits on the edge of my tray.
Join me for dinner.
I laugh, a full blown belly laugh. It echoes through the empty hall making me laugh harder. I don't know why, but I think I've gone mad.
I've lost all sense of time and I'm half asleep when someone hits the bars with some kind of hard object.
"Put this on and hurry, he's waiting."
I join him in a stunning dress as black as the night sky. His eyes widen when he sees me and the purple eyed demon throws me in a seat across from him.
"Thank you for joining me this evening, human."
"Madeline," I say, as food is placed in front of me.
"Excuse me?"
"My name."
"Do you have one?"
He hesitates, like he's afraid to tell me. In my head his name is probably Walter or some dorky name like that.
"Tobin," he replies.
"So what's this all about... Tobin?"
He chokes on his food, "Uh. I uh... figured you might like to eat."
"No, Tobin. What's this really about?"
He stares at me stunned, like I'm the only one who has ever questioned him.
He clears his throat, "I need a mate," his cheeks flush under the hood of his robe.
I almost spit out my food, "Hate to break it to you, but I'm not down here to be Satan's lover. I lost my way and am only here so that Gretchen could go on living her life up there. I don't care what you do to me, but I won't ever be your mate."
He stares at me for a really long time. His expression softens. He snaps his fingers and I'm being taken away by violet eyes and thrown back into my cell.
Day after day letters arrive. I rip them, bite them, and throw the paper at violet eyes head.
I've lost all track of time and when I wake someone is watching me, Tobin.
"Can I show you something?"
I quietly follow him. We head back up, much higher than before onto a mountain top. The world around me is not the world I once knew.
"These are my lands, those are my people."
I can hardly see the tiny specks of creatures mulling around below us.
"They mean everything to me and soon they will all lose their lives. I need a lady to rule by my side or he will attack my people," he says.
We stand side by side, our hands almost touching.
"Who will attack?"
"Satan," he says, staring off into the land. "He will take them one by one and torture them and when he's all done," he pauses. "He'll come for me."
"So, why should I save you?"
I look up briefly and then out at the world around me.
"Because if you don't, you'll die with them. He doesn't care who he kills."
"You don't care either, you have a whole lair of people trapped."
"They are prisoners. They broke the law, they deserve to be there. I'm not the bad guy here Mad... Madeline," he says it like he's never called a human by their name before.
I laugh, and he stares down at me like I'm crazy.
"What?" a small smirk plays on his lips, and suddenly he doesn't look so scary.
"You'll have to convince me that it will be worth it, and I'm not talking creepy black roses and love notes," I say.
I don't know why I'm doing this, but maybe if I help him save his people he'll let me go home.
"Would a room upgrade work?"
I shrug, "What did you have in mind?"
