How Far We'll Go
...
Third Person P.O.V
Ari grunts in annoyance, hurling another piece of wood at the sand in front of him with a huff.
He folds his arms, his leg bouncing as he crosses it over his other.
"I don't know why he doesn't listen. I mean... If there's no fish here, we could try out there!" Ari rants, (Y/N) sighing as she sits besides him.
She leans over, grabbing a section of his curly hair and stretching it as far as it could go as Ari raises a brow, side-glancing at her.
"Your hair's getting long," (Y/N) observes, lightly tugging on the strands and letting it go as he chuckles.
Ari smiles with a raised brow, feeling his face heat up slightly. "Is that a good thing?"
"I'll let you decide." She responds with a shrug, taking the rest of the wood he was picking apart and tossing it.
"Hmm," Ari hums with a playful roll of his eyes before sighing once more, shaking his head. "I don't get why they were so upset."
"Well..." (M/N) clears her throat, approaching with Sinna and climbing over the tree. "You did say you wanted to... go beyond the reef in front of them."
"Standing on a boat." Sinna adds, sitting on the other side of Ari.
"She didn't mean to just go beyond the reef because we want to be on the ocean," Ari replies, angrily gesturing towards the glistening waters.
"But you both still do." Sinna responds, glancing between the two before sighing softly. "They're just hard on you because--"
"Because my father doesn't get me and hers is just trying to protect her." Ari interrupts, (M/N) shaking her head.
"They were you once." (M/N) speaks softly, her eyes holding sadness as she looks to the sky. "Drawn to the ocean... Longing to sail further..."
...
A younger Tui, (F/N), and their other closest friend snuck through the night, swiping a boat.
"They took a canoe..." Sinna continues.
The three sail out onto the sea, Tui steering, (F/N) on the bow and their friend handling the mast.
"They crossed the reef."
Lightning flashes across the sky suddenly, a horrible storm picking up and raining down on them as the waves thrash around.
"And found an unforgiving sea. Waves like mountains..."
The boat was destroyed, the young men falling into the sea. Tui's eyes widen as a large piece of wood slams against (F/N), knocking him out.
"Their best friend begged to be on that boat with them..."
Tui swims after (F/N), grabbing him before noticing their other friend drifting deeper and deeper into the depths of the sea.
"And Ari's father could only save my (F/N)."
Tui cries out after their friend, quickly swimming up to the surface with (F/N) over his shoulder.
...
Ari looks to the side of (Y/N)'s face as she continues to watch her mother, her eyebrows furrowed in sadness.
"They're hoping... The same thing won't happen to you two."
"They want to save you." Sinna agrees, Ari looking away as (M/N) side hugs (Y/N). "Somtimes... Who we wish we were, what we wish we could do... It's just not meant to be." She sighs, gently brushing Ari's hair from his face.
Sinna rises, walking away from the three as (M/N) sighs. She kisses (Y/N)'s temple, squeezing her lightly before following after her friend.
The two remain silent, Ari trying to come up with something to say before he exhales deeply through his nose.
"We've been staring at the edge of the water... Long as I can remember," (Y/N) rises, Ari looking up and watching her as she stands close to the ocean. "Never really knowing why."
Ari stands, walking over to her as he glances towards the village. "We wish we could be perfect children... But we come back to the ocean... No matter how hard we try."
Ari turns, running a his hands through his hair in aggravation as (Y/N) walks besides him, Pua tailing after them.
"Every turn we take..."
"Every trail we track..."
"Every path we make, every road leads back," Ari glances back at Pua as they walk across the island, landing at the ocean once more. "To the place we know we cannot go where we long to be..."
He moves the leaves out of the way for him and (Y/N), (Y/N) laughing as she races ahead and jumps onto one of the boats.
"See the line where the sky meets the sea!"
"It calls us!"
Ari rushes after her, (Y/N) helping him up as he places a hand on the mast.
"And no one knows..." He grabs the roap, pretending to adjust the sail as (Y/N) looks out on the horizen. "How far it goes!"
"If the wind on our sail on the sea stays behind us..."
Ari leans forward, holding the mast as (Y/N) notices Pua approaching with an oar.
"One day we'll know..."
She grabs the oar from Pua, offering it to Ari. He grabs it with a smile, looking over it before frowning.
"If we go there's just no telling how far we'll go."
Ari plants the oar in the sand, (Y/N) deflating slightly with a small sigh as she looks back at the ocean before following him.
"I know everybody on this island seems so happy on this island, but--"
"Everything is by design," Ari catches a falling coconut, forcing a smile to the man who dropped it.
Pua rushes after the two, squealing as a carpet was thrown over him accidentally. He peeks out from it, flopping with another squeal.
(Y/N) continues trying to gain Ari's attention, him distracted by the people. He tosses a coconut to man with a grin, halting to avoid children with a laugh. "I know everybody on this island has a role on this island..."
He waves to the kids as they rush away, his eyes trailing up to the mountain.
(Y/N) stops with a dejected frown, Pua sadly grunting and sitting at her feet as she watches Ari walk off.
"So maybe I can role with mine."
...
Ari walks up the mountain, taking long strides as he looks ahead in determination.
"I can lead with pride, I can make us strong, I'll be satisfied if I play along..."
He goes to set a stone on the others, hesitating with a frown when he thinks of (Y/N).
"But a voice inside says a different song... What is wrong with me?!"
Ari shakes his head as he takes a step away from the stones, looking back at the ocean. His eyes trail to the beach, his face lighting up and his mood shifting when he sees (Y/N) sitting on the boat with Pua.
"See the light as it shines on the sea," he tosses the stone as he starts rushing to meet them. "It's blinding! But no one knows!" Ari grabs a palm tree leaf, using it to slide down a fallen tree trunk closer to floor. "How deep it goes!"
"And it seems like it's calling out to us, so come find us!" He races past his Chief headdress, focused on getting to (Y/N).
Ari leaps to avoid rushing geysers, "and let us know..."
He skids to a stop, panting lightly as he approaches (Y/N). Her gaze was fixated down, her cheeks resting in her palms as she swings her legs.
Pua squeals happily when he sees Ari, (Y/N) quickly glancing up with a small gasp as Ari offers a wide smile.
"What's beyond that line, will we cross that line?!"
He pushes the boat onto the water, (Y/N) sitting by the mast and Pua enjoying the breeze on the front.
"The line where the sky meets the sea!" (Y/N) smiles, Ari leaping into the boat and using the oar to paddle.
"It calls us! And no one knows... How far it goes!"
The wind blows gently, the waves calm as (Y/N) lowers her hand in the water with a small laugh.
"If the wind in our sail on the sea stays behind us..." Ari hoists the sail, tying the rope down as (Y/N) checks to make sure it was adjusted right with a nod.
"One day we'll know..."
"How far we'll go!"
Both smile at one another, Ari nodding with confidence and (Y/N) sitting back down in front of him.
