Chapter Four: Blame/Forgive/Never Forget.

I was uncertain of how long I kept myself locked away in my room, I heard a knock at my door earlier and a small voice asking me if I was ok but I ignored it. I wasn't ok...I was far from it.

I sat on my bed with my shoulders slumped, my head lowered and my spirit broken. That girls harsh words kept chanting themselves through my mind and each time they made me sadder, angrier.

"She Should Be Burned!"

Lifting my hand in front of my face I watched as a small sparkling ball of bright light formed, it bounced on my palm effortlessly and slowly exploded into tiny little sparkles. They danced through the air around me before vanishing, in my eyes the sight was beautiful....not deadly.

The way Cassius sat in his chair, not even bothered by the harsh words that were said towards me made my mind ache with confusion. I wasn't happy about this marriage either, I never even had the chance at the freedom he owns and yet I wouldn't let someone insult him the way his friend did.

Rubbing my sore eyes I took a deep breath just as a low knock sounded at my door, staying seated on the bed I twisted my wrist and listened to the lock click open. With a gently swipe of my hand the door swayed open and I found Lorik standing there with his hands placed behind his hands, a sympathetic look rested on his calm features and with one of his hands he gestured for me to come.

Climbing off the bed I walked over to him and stood in front of him, he let out a small sigh as he dusted my hair off of my shoulder."Come, let's take a walk together. I'd like to show you my home and speak with you." He said softly.

He gently rested his hand against the space between my shoulders and began guiding me down the hall with, I easily kept up with his walking pace and glanced at him every so often.

I was guided outside and led past the iron gates into town, all different kinds of people wandered around. They were either selling something, buying or just shuffling, most of them looked normal but a few had striking features. A little girl playing on the ground looked at me as I walked by, one side of her face held brown eyes and tanned skin while the other half was covered in metallic scales.

"I'm sorry it's been so difficult for you here, since you've arrived you've been treated with disrespect. Most coming from my son but Numissa informed me that his little "Guest" shared a few words with you and none were kind. By the way you've hidden in your room all day I can tell they struck a cord." He said.

Looking down at the ground I stopped walking and shrugged my shoulders, my fingers fiddled with my old dress as I spoke."She told me I should be burned, that I have filthy blood because I'm a witch and Cassius sat there. I understand his unhappiness towards an arranged marriage but I didn't come throwing horrible things in his face!, he's sleeping with women and enjoying his life when I've never even had the chance to live mine!"

Lorik sucked in a deep breath, his lips pressed together in annoyance."Cassius will apologize to you Emerald, I swear to you that."

Shaking my head in defeat I looked into his eyes sadly."That's fine, he gives me a fake apology and then what?, Am I even safe here? Your own son could feel the same way about me and I'll have to be married to someone like that Lorik.."

Two strong hands gripped my shoulders and gave me a gentle shake."No, I agree that my son is spoiled and he abuses the power he has but he does not think that way. No one here will try to come after you Emerald, you safe here and you will be safe with Cassius." He said firmly.

I tucked my hair behind my ear and nodded, from the sincere look in Lorik's eyes I could tell he wasn't lying to me. All I hoped for was that Cassius could offer me the same respect I was willing to offer him, I knew we would never love each other but that didn't mean we couldn't be friends.

Returning his hand to same spot between my shoulders, Lorik began leading me off once more."There's one more place I wanted to show you, when were finished we can return home for a nice dinner." He said happily.

We walked until we reached a large barn, from outside I could hear low mumbles and odd noises coming from inside. Lorik walked in first and I followed behind him, several voices began murmuring all at once.

Inside, I expected to see horses and maybe farm hands helping out but instead I saw creatures. They all resembled the small dragon who had picked me up at my home.

"Long ago only dragons ruled, pure blooded, scaled and winged beasts. One dragon in particular changed everything, he had no eyes for a female of his kind...instead his eyes landed on a human village girl. Though there was no way a large dragon could ever be with a human girl but with the help of a witch he could be,  with a drop of blood here and a pinch of scales there a mortal form was created for the large beast. He used every moment of being a mortal to seduce the village girl and they fell deep in love with each other, through their love a child was conceived. One born in the form of a mortal but with the all the gifts of the flying beast."

"This is how we were created, with dragons seeking out witches for mortals forms and more children being born there were less seeking out their own race. That's how the Drecon were created, they became the lesser beings of our world and now they serve us." Lorik explained.'

"We used to be great and powerful!, He always talks about us like were stubby little butterflies." A scratchy voiced grumbled.

Whipping my head towards one of the stables, I locked gazes with one of the creatures and widened my eyes."Did...one of them just speak?" I questioned.

Lorik turned to face me with curiosity glimmering in his eyes."You can understand them?, That's remarkable, mostly our kind can understand what they say but its very rare to find a witch who can. I knew you belonged in this family!" He chirped.

With an excited bounce in his step he turned to the entrance of the barn and beckoned me over."Let us go to dinner, I must tell Numissa about this and speak with some of my friends. They will be so pleased to hear of this interesting news, I would love to find out more about this and your abilities."

Was I the only one a little worried about being able to understand scaly creatures?
