Chapter 3

"Okay ready to go get your stuff?" Ryder asked. "Sure, but i warn you it's no palace." I said. "I'm sure it's fine." He said. But i wasn't, i was embarrassed that he'd see how i had to hide away. Ethan waved as we pulled out, towing my car behind a red tow truck. Won't miss old Betty. I had gotten the car from a neighbor. Her dad owned the car and he was older so was the car. She just wanted to be rid of all of his stuff. So when she offered to sell it to me i jumped on it. I had to get to work.

I gave Ryder directions to my old neighborhood. The run down houses came to view along with everybody in it. People sitting on their porches smoking, people passed out in there yards and even a couple making out heavily against a tree. I would not miss this place.

Ryder pulled in and started to walk towards the front door. "Actually it's this way." I said walking around the side to the window. "Oh." He said as i slid the window up. I climbed over and fell inside onto my old bed. "I grabbed these boxes on the way out." He said lifting the cover to his truck. He slid several boxes inside to me and slid inside falling onto my bed with a thud.

"So just take everything?" He asked. "Well take the mini fridge but you can leave the microwave." I said pointing onto my desk. I started loading clothes, and makeup and toiletries left and right. He put the boxes into the truck as i packed them. The last thing i took was my quilt, the only thing i had gotten from my grandmother. "All packed?" He asked. "Looks like it." I said as he climbed out the window.

Just then i heard some loud banging on the door. "Let me in there girl." Came a gruff voice on the outside. "Oh no the wood's splintering." I gasped running to the window. "Here i'll help you." Ryder said holding his arms out. I quickly jumped out the window and into his arms as the door burst open. "Hurry go go go!!" I screamed running to get into the truck. He pulled away, the tires squealing as a head popped out the window shaking his fist.

"So that was fun..." Ryder said smiling. I groaned. "Just another day in paradise." I shrugged. "Hey, i'm real sorry you had to deal with that everyday." He said. "It's okay, i got used to it and i figured out how to deal with it." I said. "Yea but you shouldn't of had to." He said. "I know that, but i often wonder why nobody called cps." I sighed. "What do you mean?" He asked. "Some days it was obvious i hadn't gotten enough sleep last night. Or that one of my moms boyfriends had hut me. Ya know. Why didn't a teacher do anything?" I questioned.

"Well where was your dad during all this?" He asked. "My dad is in prison actually." I said. "Oh i didn't see that one coming." He gripped the steering wheel. "Yea, for hacking. money actually. And probably a few other things he's been there since i was a kid." I sighed. "You haven't gone to see him?" He asked. "No and i'm not even sure i want to. I mean he wasn't there for me he didn't call." I said. "Or maybe he did and your mom just hid it?" He suggested.

"That is totally possible i suppose. And i also think that maybe he's embarrassed he isn't good enough ya know? Cause what kind of a father is one who's in jail?" I asked. "That's true, my dad died when i was really young and my mom waited a while to get remarried. I think it hurt me that she knew what a good kid i was back then but then the second she remarries i'm suddenly a problem child? I don't know."

"Yea, i get that. My mom just gave up i mean she was going downhill before my dad was arrested it just sucks that i lost both parents at once." "Didn't you have any family that could've taken you in? Well the only family i really knew was my grandparents but they died when i was a baby. And as for the other family that would've been like going to live with strangers. At least foster strangers want to take you in. Your family may not and just because you're family doesn't mean anything." I said.

"That's true." He said. "Are you gonna go see your dad?" He asked. "Oh. I don't know if i could handle it. I mean i have a lot of hurt feelings over that." I frowned. "Well i understand that. Well if you decide you want to go, i'd be happy to go with you." He said. "Thanks i'd appreciate that. Going to jail scares me. Even if it's just to visit." I shrugged. "I understand that." He said pulling into the drive. He put the code into the gate and we drove through. "I'll just park here so we can unload all your stuff then i'll park in the garage. He went inside and came back with all the guys. They all started grabbing boxes left and right. I didn't have a ton of stuff so we got it all inside pretty quickly. "Thanks guys!" I said. They all left and gave me some time to unpack.

I sighed falling backwards into the bed. I finally felt at peace. Like i was at home. I was going to like living here. I rolled over and hopped up off the bed heading back into the living room. "Hey there you are Sydney i was hoping we could get you a new phone." Liam said. "Oh great, thanks." I followed him into the tech room.

He held up two phone boxes. "Apple or Android?" He asked. "Uhm...i have no idea. All I've ever had was this cheap flip phone." I said holding it up and sliding it onto the table. "What do you have now?" I asked. "Apple, iPhone is pretty good. But I've had both. " He said. "Okay i'll take the iPhone." I said. "Great." He said putting the other box back on the shelf and opening the phone. "You guys must go through a lot of phones." I said noticing the big stack of boxes on the shelf.

"Sometimes. Okay i'm just hooking this into itunes. If you need a new one you just plug it in and it'll be like you have the same phone. It only took a few minutes. Then he typed some things on the phone. "Okay i added all of our numbers in here. Here ya go." He said handing me the phone. "Thank you!" I said.

"No problem." "So how long have you been a part of the heart breaker society?" I asked taking a seat in a chair across from him. "Only six months, before you i was the new guy." He said. "Caleb mentioned you weren't keen on joining." I commented. "Oh yea, some guy i don't know comes up to me after school and wants to talk is sketchy as all get out. Then he starts showing up to the science fairs. I thought maybe he was like a college rep or something. Wanting to talk to me about a science or technology program."

"But he said something about a job. I didn't need a job. I was staying with my grandparents and everything was okay. I'm in high school ya know. But he kept coming around one day my grandparents talked to him and he was at home eating dinner when i got there. I was totally freaked out! But my grandmother told me i should join and move into the house. I couldn't figure out why they would say that. She just said that they weren't getting any younger and this would ensure that i'd have a safe place to stay after they were gone so i did. I mean i'd do anything for them. But i go over there all the time so it's not so bad." He said.

"Well i'm glad you're here." I said. "I didn't want to be i didn't want to leave them. I mean especially if they needed me. But i guess maybe this is a good opportunity. You know a lot of good jobs come after we leave the society." He said. "That's great, i honestly didn't know how i was going to pay for college or even what i'd do i mean i couldn't figure out anything other than hacking that i'd be good at." I shrugged.

"So how did you get into hacking anyways? Seems like an odd hobby." He noted. "It totally is. My dad went to jail and he left behind an old lap top and hacking book. It was all i had from him i started playing around and wasn't to bad." I said shrugging.
