Chapter 63
So. Sunshine's picking up the guys.
When she rolls into the park, Nolan, Lionel, and Gary are all standing side-by-side, conversing with each other, jumping when they notice she's arrived.
"Oh! Hey!" Gary exclaims. Holding a Winnie the Pooh stuffed animal in his arms. Wonderful. He seems way too excited, especially with his suitcase, sleeping roll, and pillow tucked next to his side. He shakes Lionel enthusiastically. "That's our car! I almost forgot we were going on the adventure."
"Hey, Sunshine," Nolan greets, hands stuffed in his pockets, sunglasses covering his eyes. It's mostly overcast, but she's willing to forget one of the first comments he ever made to her.
"Hey, guys," she greets.
"Hi," Gary laughs, jumping up and down, "Hi!"
Lionel grabs his sleeping bag and rolls it around his arm, picking up a huge bag of Doritos, hoisting a strap bag over his shoulder.
"So, are you all—you're all ready?" She looks over their bags as Gary slides his fedora on top of his head, and thinks about the last time she stayed (nearly) overnight with Nolan. At his 'grandma's' house. Hopefully nothing like that happens again.
"Yes, we are ready," Nolan says, walking up to the car. He has absolutely nothing with him.
"You got everything?" she asks.
"Yes," Lionel replies, walking with Gary towards the car.
Finally noticing Nolan, Sunshine turns her head and frowns. "Um—Nolan, where's all your stuff?"
He looks at her for a moment. "I have everything. Right here." He reaches into his pocket, pausing, looking at Gary and Lionel, motioning toward the back seat. "Get in the car. Go."
"Shotgun!" Gary exclaims.
Lionel glares at his friend.
"Yeah, I've got—" Nolan continues rummaging around his pockets, pulling out said objects, "A toothbrush—"
"Oh, wow," she says lamely. Apparently he doesn't know what a bag is.
"—got a ballpoint pen, in case I need to write something down. Uh, I've a USB charger. Just have to—tie something—"
Apparently they're ready.
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
Not even thirty minutes later and the Scooby Gang is at the house, the gravel, as usual, crunching loudly under the car tires. "So, we're here," Sunshine quips, rolling into the driveway.
Guess who took shotgun? Definitely not Gary.
She sort of realizes that Nolan never gives up his passenger seat spot. Not even with Andrew.
(Andrew snaps his fingers and smiles. "Do I get shotgun?"
Nolan stares at him.
Sunshine stares at him.
"What do you mean, do you get— no." Nolan shakes his head. "No, hop in the car."
"I'll hop in the backseat."
"Yeah, there you go.")
The memory is fond. Almost. Well, it would be had the BEK investigation not gone to such shit.
A sudden loud call jolts Sunshine out of her thoughts. She turns and spots Georgia rounding the side of the house, waving at the team.
Jesus.
She just called this a team.
"Wave, guys," Sunshine says, "Be nice."
"Hi," Nolan waves unconvincingly.
The group eventually clambers out of the car, Sunshine grabbing the camera and leading the way towards Georgia and past the cherrywood porch. "Hey," Sunshine smiles.
"Did you find everything alright?" Georgia asks.
"Yeah!"
"Good, excellent!"
Lionel is eating his Doritos. Not surprising.
"Please, come on in," Georgia says, waving toward what must be the back door. Or is the porch not the real front door? It's a little confusing.
"Thank you," Nolan says. Wow, he's actually being polite.
"Chip?" Lionel offers.
Sunshine waves him off, grossed out. "No, I'm fine. Thanks." Another cherrywood porch juts out from the house, this time connected to a small set of stairs. Sunshine clambers up the steps, looking at the cute yellow chairs, following Georgia through the black door. Okay, this must definitely be the front door.
"Come on in," Georgia says excitedly.
"Thanks."
"Make sure you close the door behind you, please," she advises the group. "Thank you!"
At least she's nice.
"Now, make yourselves at home," Georgia smiles. "Feel free to sit anywhere you like. Um, there's food in the refrigerator—I made my favorite potato soup and lasagna for you, so they're—" She notices Gary standing at the mouth of the kitchen, holding his stupid teddy bear thing behind his back, probably because he's embarrassed. Georgia smirks. "Oh, you don't need to hide it, he's a cutie, can I—?"
Gary laughs and whips out the Winnie the Pooh stuffed bear, offering it to Georgia.
She grips the sides and kisses its forehead, which, okay, is kind of weird, but whatever, she is grandmother age. "He's precious. Oh!" She points behind Gary, letting go of the bear. "Please don't pay any attention to the little jar of apples over on the floor, that's for the mouse."
Gary looks at Georgia, eyes wide.
She continues on. "Don't worry about it, he's very well-trained. So," Georgia turns back to Nolan and Lionel, "do you have any questions about anything?"
Lionel shakes his head but steps forward, holding out his bag. "Chip?"
Sunshine nearly drops her forehead into her hand.
"Oh, no thank you," Georgia says politely. "You know, this may end up just sort of being a vacation for you all, I- I really haven't felt anything specific so I don't know if there's anything here or not, but please make yourselves at home, have a great time—" She turns to Sunshine and smiles. "Could I speak with you for just a moment? Behind?"
Sunshine freezes. Oh, no. Lionel and Gary have totally made her look ridiculous. At least Nolan has been silent so far.
"It's girl talk, don't worry about it," she laughs at the guys, stepping away from the group and leading Sunshine outside. Hot beams of sunlight splatter on to her face as she walks into the humid Oregon air, making a worried face at the camera before turning towards the homeowner.
"I, I just wanted to let you know," Georgia begins, closing the door behind them, "that, um, the thing that my co-worker said—about someone not being trustable, you know, that kind of thing—I, I just don't think that was the case, I wouldn't worry about it—"
Sunshine laughs with relief. Oh, thank God.
"—I think your people are fine, so you can do whatever you need to do. Really enjoy yourselves this weekend, it's a lovely place."
"Oh, cool," Sunshine smiles. "Yeah, thanks! No, it's beautiful." She admires the river from across the road. "Thank you so much."
"Yes— oh! And, um, the caretaker is not gonna be here."
"Oh, okay," she says, relaxing even more. No Creepy Farmer, no serial killer worries.
"I told him he could go—since I trusted all you, that it would be fine and he could just go away for the weekend."
"Okay," Sunshine nods.
"So, you— it's all yours! You're on your own!"
"Thank you!"
"All right!"
"Cool," she smiles.
Time to get started.
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
Not long after Georgia leaves and Sunshine does extensive assuring that the homeowner was not upset about the Doritos or the teddy bear, they head out of the house and explore the outside a little more.
Now, they're standing in a field, the sun growing lower in the sky but it's not quite dusk yet. Nolan is holding the camera, Lionel typing something on his phone behind Sunshine, Gary walking towards a broken fence and a black sign with white painted letters in the background.
"Sunshine," Nolan says, probably standing at least two feet taller than her, "how could anything be haunted in such a beautiful area?" He pans the camera around the scenery, showing the lush, forest-laden mountains, large stalks of heather lining the border to another house. "It's gorgeous here. It's like Dr. Seuss Land. Spectacular." He smiles. "Look at the—!" His voice cracks slightly. "The panorama, man."
The stares at him and gives a sarcastic thumbs up.
"Okay," he huffs, "not a nature kid, I get it."
Up ahead, Gary runs back from the sign post, grass crunching beneath his white tennis shoes.
"Sparky, what did you find?" Nolan demands.
Gary and Sunshine laugh.
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
"I have to show you guys something," Sunshine whispers into the camera once they're back inside, smiling endlessly. Outside on the porch (with the stairs), Gary is sitting in one of the little yellow lawn chairs, a colorful blue, purple, and yellow Popples stuffed animal tucked between his arms.
He turns to her, noticing movement.
"What are you doing?" Sunshine laughs.
"Heh." He smiles softly. "It's just really peaceful. Just trying to find a zen." Gary makes an ambiguous hand motion. "I'm not usually around places like this, I'm usually around... Lionel."
They both giggle.
He raises his head, looking out at a house across the water. "Like I wonder if anyone lives in that place over there. It would be perfect."
"Yeah...?" Sunshine offers. Nolan's right. Not a nature kid.
"Yeah." Gary shrugs, taking a sip of his pomegranate vitamin water. "Kinda—find a calm place, be ready for tonight." He turns to her, brows raised. "You doin' alright?"
"Yeah," she smiles, "no, I'm fine. Good." A line of cars race past, filling the peace with an abundance of noise. "It's very peaceful with all these cars, too."
"Well," Gary smiles, "I'll take what we can get."
True, true.
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
Now Gary has the camera, and he's making his own little video away from the group.
Wonderful.
"Uh, I found the camera back up at the house," he explains, holding it at the absolute lowest, worst angle possible, "and nobody's—nobody's—I looked away for just a couple of minutes, and now everybody's here on the dock, and I really feel as though there's a lot more—"
He sighs and walks over the dock, water lapping beneath his feet, staining the cherrywood a slightly darker shade. On a nearby boat, Nolan is resting on one of the horizontal wooden platform seats, legs crossed together, arms outstretched against the lip of the boat. On the dock, both Lionel and Sunshine are splayed on the ground, laying down and soaking in the sun.
"Guys, I look away for like a minute," he says, catching only Lionel's attention, "and you're sunning yourselves on the dock, I really feel like we need to do everything—"
"Dude, this— this—" Lionel tries.
"—we need to get ready for tonight!"
"Dude," Lionel interrupts, smiling, dramatically flailing his arms, "this is the greatest vacation, really. I mean, I'm so glad you got me outta Winnetachi strippin', y'know, I really needed a few days to come out here and just— veg! And just relax!" His voice raises as he looks out over the water. "Look how gorgeous it is out here!"
"Lionel," Gary says, "but what I'm saying is—"
"Why," Nolan groans from the boat, lifting his head, squinting through the sunlight, "Why are you yelling?"
"No no no, it's not about yelling," Gary explains, "I'm just saying that I think we really need to make sure we're ready for tonight."
"Yeah, I'm ready," Sunshine mumbles from the dock, still laying down.
"Although it is really—" He sighs and watches the lapping waves of the wide river.
"Yeah, there's really not a lot to do," Nolan agrees, "you just kinda stand there."
"You just need to take your shirt off," Lionel says.
"Relax," Nolan chimes in.
"Alright, I'm not taking my shirt off, but I just want you guys to remember this if later something happens and we're not prepared for it."
Sunshine jerks her arm over her eyes. "You can say, 'I told you so! I told you so!'" she mimics in a high voice.
"Nothing's gonna happen," Lionel says, "we're gonna have a great tan!"
Nolan sighs. "Do you wanna, like, manufacture weapons or something, what are you looking for here?"
"It's not about— I'm not manufacturing— there's machetes in the—"
"Oh, yeah!" Lionel claps excitedly. "I love 'em, I love machetes!"
"That's what I'm saying," Nolan throws his arms out, sitting up, "if we get in trouble we'll be fine."
"Alright," Gary says, handing the camera to Nolan, "you know what, here, I'm gonna go— I'm gonna go make sure everything's— set up some equipment— and just do one final look—" Lionel trails after as Gary starts his way toward the house.
Looks like his zenning didn't work.
"Guys," Nolan sighs, "please don't mess with their house too much."
"I got a sunburn," Lionel says.
"No, no, no, you guys can stay here," Gary motions toward Nolan and Sunshine, who's standing up, "it's fine, it's fine."
"Well," Nolan grunts, "I'm not leaving them alone in that house." He clambers out of the rocking boat and follows Sunshine across the dock. "Guuuuys," he calls when Gary and Lionel make it to the top of the ramp, "you're gonna ruin everything~!"
Once they make it to the two misfits, Nolan sighs. "Come on, don't—Don't booby-trap anything, okay? Don't turn anything over, don't barricade any of the rooms, I don't—I don't want to see any nails or boards on any windows or doors—"
Well, someone's bossy.
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
The internet is spotty. And Sunshine gets to have a sleepover with a bunch of weird guys. Yay.
What could be better?
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
Dusk is nearing. Lionel has the camera and he's standing next to Gary, both men inspecting the outside of the house.
"Are you starting filming?" Gary asks.
"I am." Lionel nods.
"Okay— sorry," Gary backs up from the camera when he realizes how close he is, bending down and motioning towards the bottom of the house, where a pile of planks have come undone, leaving a yawning black abyss below the structure, "These are all entryways from which a ghost could come in or out, so."
Lionel bends down, looking under the house.
"You have, uh, you have the ghost radar?"
"I do! Yeah." Lionel pulls out his phone and hands it to Gary. "Put the ghost radar on."
"Great, great great," Gary nods, placing the phone near the discarded planks.
"You got service? Make sure it comes in, cause—"
"It's weak."
"It is weak out here."
Gary squints, pulling the phone to his face.
"Must be the mountain," Lionel sighs.
From the side, Sunshine jumps to the ground, raising a brow at the dynamic duo.
"Hey," Gary calls to her, "hey."
"What are you guys doin'?" she asks, smirking.
"Well," Gary says, "there's a few things that we can do when we get to a house that might be— that might have some paranormal activity. We've got, we've got a ghost radar—"
Sunshine makes an appalled face at the camera.
"—and, just trying to secure the perimeter, uhh, what are—what are you doing?"
She shrugs, looking between both of them, putting a Frito in her mouth, "Eating chips...?"
"Okay, great," Gary mumbles.
"Oh-hoh, yeah!" Lionel turns the camera around and grins. "That's my kinda chick right there! Eatin' chips! That's what I'm talkin' about!"
"They're Frito's," she notes.
"It's over!" he exclaims.
They all laugh.
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
Sunshine's gotta be honest. The guys make her tired. They're awesome, and all, but she just gets really sleepy with all of them around.
They're a little crazy.
But, hey, safety in numbers, and four is perfect, so. Guess that's nice. Although, she can't exactly figure out why she wants them around.
In the front yard, Nolan, Gary, and Lionel are poised in awkward stances, throwing a white frisbee to each other. It slips from Lionel's hands and he trips over his own shoes, stumbling to the ground.
Sunshine snorts.
Yeah.
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
The guys are sitting outside, sitting side-by-side. Gary has the camera and moves it toward Nolan and Lionel, who's eating his Doritos. "Guys," he says, "I think that, uh, I think Sunshine might be annoyed with us."
"Why?" Lionel asks through a mouthful of chips. Nolan looks completely unbothered. "I haven't peed myself!"
"No—"
"I haven't done anything!"
"—which is great, it's great, but—"
"Seriously, I haven't done anything."
"I know, that's exactly why I think she might be annoyed with us, because we're just... we're just out here wasting time. I took her camera."
Nolan continues watching the river.
Lionel laughs and slaps Nolan's arm. "Oh. What a way to be annoyed! I mean," he suddenly looks serious, realizing who he's talking to, "you're closer to her than any of us, but..."
"Yeah," Gary nods, looking at Nolan, "how do you feel like today's going so far? You've been on more of these with her."
He looks between both of them. "Guys." Nolan stretches out his arms toward the scenery. That's all that needs to be said.
"Alright, that's a fair point," Gary grudgingly agrees.
Lionel munches on his Doritos.
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
Sunshine sighs. So, for the team, she's decided, since they've already been here for, like, hours, to try something.
She pulls out the Ouija board.
Yeah, she knows. So stupid. But, she's going to leave it up to her viewers to vote because she's a kind and caring person, so. They have about a half hour to vote.
Use Ouija board? Thumbs up.
Never use Ouija board? Thumbs down.
She really wants to use it.
wow an update after only 2 days? WACK
so yes i don't remember anything about this but uh get ready for maaaaaybe Ouija board? hehehehe
