Chapter 58

It's been two months since they moved out of the house.

Sunshine is feeling... surprisingly happy. Okay, yeah, the exorcism was terrible, and what happened with Victoria and Nolan was a travesty.

But she's graduated now. She has full time to push toward the paranormal — save for getting a real job, not just posting ghost videos on YouTube — and is looking forward to going on new adventures.

Since the old house, Sunshine and Kat visited a cabin in the woods, which turned out to be haunted, and have now successfully moved into their new house. It's spacious, has two stories, wide rooms, and Sunshine is in love. Yeah, she misses their old home, but to new beginnings! As Victoria said, this is a new chapter in her life. She might as well make the most of it.

Until... well.

Epic beyond epic news.

Nolan called.

Yeah. He left a pretty strange message, and Sunshine feels weird and has absolutely no idea what to do. She's telling her fans — but not her mom, because, just no — and hoping to get some feedback on what the hell she should do.

Looks like her next little adventure, huh?
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
Nolan's been calling a LOT. Like, way too much for any normal person.

Normal Groundling?

Anyway, Sunshine's decided to play one of his voicemails for the camera. This should be great.

"Sunshine, hey," Nolan's voice comes over the speaker as she raises the phone to her ear, raising her brows at the camera. "I, uh... I understand we've been out of touch for a while, but I think I made a lead on something paranormal and awesome."

She rolls her eyes.

"Uh, call me back, okay?" And there it ends.

Sunshine shakes her head. "See?" she tells the camera. "He has to say things like, 'I have a lead on paranormal something,' and I don't even remember what else he said, but anyways, he knows how to get to me. Remind me to never give my phone number out again." This should end up looking just wonderful if she decides to actually meet up with him.

Oh, so many choices. At least Mom's not up her ass on this one, though.

For now.
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
Sunshine's not allowed to film in the house, so now she's filming outside. On the roof. Hah.

"So I know that you know," she begins, positioning herself to get comfortable as she sits outside her window, smiling softly at the thought of her fans so eager for Sunshine to contact the weirdo, "that you all want me to call Nolan back and talk to him, and I totally plan on doing that and filming it and everything, but then he... sorta took me by surprise."

She squints, turning her head to shield the sun from her eyes. "He called me while I was driving and I pulled over and I answered and—" Sunshine sighs. "I didn't have the camera with me so I kinda didn't record it. Sorry."

Probably best, anyway.

"You can all be mad at me I guess, whatever. But I talked to him and everything, and it went... really well, I think. And he really wants to see me. Like, now. Not now, but, soon." Sunshine can't control her small smile, because okay, he did betray them, but he could've done worse and, like, dragged her to the....underworld or something. She doesn't know how these things work.

"I... don't know what to do," she finishes, blowing through her teeth. "I don't really wanna see him, but I feel like I should. Mostly cause a lot of you are bugging me about it." Sunshine gives a little glare at the camera, then smiles sweetly. "But... I dunno. I need your feedback."

Is it bad that she's maybe looking forward to meeting up with him again?

⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
Okay. Her fans decided.

Sunshine's going to meet Nolan.

.....with a bodyguard.

Okay, hear her out. She needs some muscle just in case Nolan decides to do anything drastic, which, in her defense, has happened before. The gun? The warehouse? Attacking Tommy? She has good reason.

And it's not like her 'bodyguard' is actually going to hurt Nolan. He's just tall and kinda buff. Y'know. Nolan may get ideas and Sunshine still isn't sure whether or not he's a Groundling, so....

Here goes nothing.

But first, she needs to tell her mom what she's doing.

Sunshine sighs and walks inside, knocking on Kat's door.

"Yeah?" her mother calls from inside.

"Uhhh, so. I'm headin' out."

"Hey, where you goin?" Kat asks, still shielded behind the door.

"I'm... y'know, just going to meet Nolan okay bye!"

"What?"

Hey, that's telling her mom, isn't it? It went really well.

She'll deal with the fallout of that later.

Sunshine scampers off before Kat can open the door and runs back outside, Bodyguard following. She hops in the car and starts it, pushing air between her lips as she drives away. They're meeting in a public place, because, yeah. The park is her best bet, and since it's the exact place she first met LeMaster, Sunshine finds some sentimental value in it.

Not.

They hop out of the car and Sunshine begins her trek through the park, making her way to a more overgrown and lush area. Trees tower around, bushes completely covering the ground, and a small stream trickles through the middle. Sunshine balances on rocks as she makes her way through and her breath hitches when she sees Nolan in the distance.

He's sitting on a stone in the middle of the stream, looking... better, than before. His hair is shorter now, less grown out, and his eyes are lighter and softer. Nolan's wearing a plaid blue shirt and blue jeans, as well as brown boots. His arms are outstretched and dangling lazily over his knees.

The trickle of the stream lulls Sunshine out of her slight daze. She makes some clatter by kicking a rock — purposefully — and Nolan looks up. He smiles and Sunshine makes a face, motioning for Bodyguard to go to the side of the stream with the camera. She sits a few feet away from Nolan and sighs.

"So," Sunshine begins, "we're here, with Nolan, in this... not... public place at all, what is this? This is not public."

He smiles. "It is a city park, there is no more public place than this."

"No, there— there are no people, at all." People are chattering as they walk by on a path.

"There's people everywhere, there's—" He purses his lips. "We can't see them because of the trees. If you do anything untoward they'll come out with—"

Sunshine rolls her eyes.

Nolan makes a vague gesture like he's holding a weapon, "—spears and stuff, very cool."

"There is, there is a person," she relents.

Nolan giggles, looking at the group and waving.

"Don't wave, it's weird."

"Besides," Nolan continues, pointing at Bodyguard, "you've got your, uh, Rent-A-Giant over here."

Sunshine makes an appalled face and splays out her palm. Seriously? Great first impression here, Nolan. "Rent-A-Giant? Did you really just say—" She shakes her head in apology at Bodyguard, "I— I apologize now for that—"

"He seems like a perfectly nice person," Nolan observes, still smiling like a little kid on his birthday.

"—for that horrible behavior."

"Where did you find all of those people that you stacked on top of each other?"

Her jaw hangs slack and her eyes open even wider. "I'm just bringing—"

"Why are you making such unnaturally tall friends?" She is so fed up with him. Nolan is having the time of his life. "I don't understand—"

"Shh!" Sunshine finally says. "I didn't feel comfortable with you, okay? I'm just being honest."

Nolan looks down. "That's fair." He nods.

"Cause you were kinda weird."

"I get that, well." He tilts his head from side to side. "It was a weird... situation." Nolan shrugs.

"...Aaaand?"

"I feel much better now." Nolan nods. "I... am at peace—"

"What's different?"

"—sitting in the middle of a stream."

"What is different other than the stream?"

"I..." Nolan hums. "I sleep regularly, I get lots of fiber, I— go to— go practice— Tuesday, and, Friday, and," his voice trails off, deliberately growing quiet, "now I'm back on my meds, so that's good."

"You're back on your meds?" She raises a brow at him.

"I don't understand why everyone has to just call me on everything I try to glaze over."

"I— I just didn't—" In her defense, she didn't know he'd needed meds. Explains a lot though, huh?

Nolan sighs. "Yes, I take— I take medication, I have a—" He points to his head, "a brain thing. It's part— to— uh—" Nolan stammers over his words.

Sunshine fills in the gaps for him. "So all the stuff you put me and Mom through, which is, y'know, cool and all, but, was that—?"

"I'm— I was the one that was getting kidnapped and dragged around mostly, I was the one that was—"

She raises her brows suspiciously. "Pretty— Pretty sure I remember you bringing a gun."

Nolan wipes a hand down his face. "There was the one gun thing and I'm sorry about that, that was a bad idea, I get it, I..."

"But that was, because you weren't," she frowns, "on your...?"

"Unwell, I was unwell," he offers.

"Cause you weren't on your... meds."

"Yeah." Nolan inclines his head forward. "I mean, I was, you know. Less than... myself."

She sighs. "So..." Sunshine looks at the camera. Looks like she's gonna let her fans vote the outcome on this one. She gives a thumbs up and makes an uncertain face as Nolan looks over, "Vote... yes I continue talking to Nolan?" She does a thumbs down with her other hand. "Or vote no, I never associate with this kid again."

"What is this?" Nolan's brows raise incredulously. "Russia?"

"I mean— have you been watching the videos?"

He looks like he's trying to find his words. "No," he eventually settles on bitterly, "my mom doesn't let me have the WiFi right now."

Sunshine snorts.

"She's a little upset. I was gone for like.... four and a half months or something."

Sunshine laughs again.

"I don't really— remember—" Nolan's hand drops in defeat.

"Your mom regulates your WiFi usage? You're living at home?" She gives him a strange look.

Nolan looks very much embarrassed. "Currently, yes."

"Well, that's good, I think...?" She wipes her hair out of her face, trying to show some positivity here. He is doing better, so Sunshine should at least give him a little bit of credit.

"Yeah... I do too."

"Anyways, go vote. I think."

Nolan shakes his head at the camera.

"Get your friends to vote."

"I don't understand."

"Your friend's friends vote."

"Why are you—" Nolan waves his hand at the camera, "turning our video channel into a commune? It doesn't make any sense."

"Don't— don't go for him." Sunshine points at Nolan.

"Hey," he defends.

"What?"

Nolan doesn't have a response to that.

"Get your friends to vote," she says. Does Nolan even have friends?

"Do vote for me." He nods, then throws his arms out. "Why am I participating in this?"

"Go do it."

Nolan smiles sarcastically. "Please do it. I'm... I'm begging you..?"

"That's terrible begging."

"I'll do— I'll do anything you ask."

Sunshine raises a brow. "Right."

He points to the camera, then to his chest, then gives two thumbs up.

She can't help but laugh.
