Chapter 54
Sunshine heard something.
The power's out and it's late in the night. She holds a flashlight shakily, narrowing her eyes as she tries to figure out what's going on. This feels oddly familiar, and reminds her of the times when they first moved into the house; when the power would cut out, the ghosts would attack, the bathroom...
Crazy to think it's been a year and four months since then.
Sunshine freezes when her flashlight falls on a shape slumped in her chair. Black hair falls over pale skin and, telling by the gray jacket, it's Victoria.
There's a lump in her throat. "Victoria?" Sunshine says cautiously.
"It's all your fault," Victoria is crying, looking down at the ground as she mutters the words over and over again.
Sunshine narrows her eyes. "Victoria. What's wrong?"
"It's all your fault...." she repeats to herself.
Sunshine frowns. "Victoria..." She makes her way in front of the woman, eyes going wide when she snaps her head up to look at Sunshine.
"I will never forgive you for this," Victoria snarls, "and neither will your father."
The door slams open and Sunshine jumps, caught off guard. When Sunshine looks back at the chair, she's gone. "Victoria?" Something deep within Sunshine pulses and tells her that...this isn't Victoria. "Where are you?" What does she mean, anyway, by 'I'll never forgive you for this'? How does Victoria know her father?!
She shakes her head and stumbles out into the hallway. "Victoria," she calls again, feeling lightheaded as she walks. Sunshine squints and nearly doubles over when she sees Uncle Tommy standing at the foot of the stairs, face coated in a mixture of blood and — and is that the plant compost?
"Uncle Tommy?" she asks, horrified. Sunshine's hands begin to shake and she takes slow steps down the stairs. Is this real? Or...or fake? How does she even tell?!
When Sunshine is five steps from the bottom, Uncle Tommy turns and disappears behind the wall. Sunshine quickly follows, peering through the darkness of the house. "Uncle Tommy." A whine catches in her throat when she sees him standing in the living room, looking the same.
A moan catches in her ear and Sunshine whips around, eyes wide. A woman with long, black hair stands in the kitchen, a pale white dress covering her body. That familiar feeling of fear burns in Sunshine's chest but she tries to push it away, tries to focus on using her powers or— or something! "Who are you?"
"Sunshine," Uncle Tommy whispers in her ear. She turns and he's suddenly screaming in her face, voice demonic as it echoes in her ears. Sunshine screams and drops to the ground, throwing her hands on her head.
Silence.
She stays crying for a moment, but eventually finds the strength to regain herself. Sunshine stands to her feet, trembling, and picks up her camera and flashlight. No one is in the house, at least that she can see.
Sunshine makes a sweep through the house— at least, downstairs. No one. She makes her way back upstairs and touches her hand to her chest, feeling her beating heart.
Things are definitely changing.
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
Yeah. So. About last night.
She called Uncle Tommy and he was out of town, so he couldn't have been in her kitchen cause he was, y'know, gone. So that's... not comforting in any way. Even if she doesn't want Uncle Tommy in her kitchen spewing brown crap out of his mouth, it still would've been more comforting if it was actually him and not a ghost or a demon or— whatever.
Next, the old lady ghost, or, whatever— is she one of Sunshine's original 32, or is she a new one that the Mentor happened to just drop by with? Seriously, they're not labeled, it's not easy to tell.
And then Victoria was yelling at her and Uncle Tommy was yelling at her, then they're both gone, then they're there, then they're gone— jeez.
Sunshine feels like the tone of things are changing. It's getting— darker? More sinister?
Fuck. She's got nothing.
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
Sunshine's just gotten off the phone with the guy who called the first time, wondering and saying all this stuff about her dad, and— well, he called back, and this time, she answered.
He started talking immediately and said Sunshine was trusting the wrong people. And she was just kinda like: Huh. Who am I trusting that's wrong? Why are they the wrong people to trust? She thought it was weird.
Then the weird dude said, 'They failed the first time getting what they want from you, they won't fail again.' Um. Great.
Sunshine doesn't know what that means, either.
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
"So— my Mentor's here." Sunshine holds the camera up to him. He's dressed a little less formal than before, but still looks — well. Formal.
"Wh- what is the point of that?" Mentor asks, motioning toward the camera. He looks more annoyed than anything.
"What?" Sunshine asks.
He motions again. "Your electronic device."
"My... camera..? It's just for recording stuff."
Mentor raises his brows. "But it doesn't make you any stronger?"
"No, I don't...think so," she says, making a face. Seriously, are these people from the thirteenth century or something?
Mentor crosses his arms. "Well, then you must get rid of it."
"Get rid of it? You mean, just, focus entirely on the paranormal and nothing else?" Sunshine says this in a bored voice.
He nods. "That's exactly what I'm saying."
She snorts.
Mentor looks down in slight aggravation. "Look," he tries, "the abilities that you have— this gift— not very many people in this world have it. Focusing your—" Mentor squints, "skills on trivial things, such as this?" He points at the screen, shrugging. "It's only going to slow you down."
"I don't have any abilities, or I don't feel like I do, other than just being haunted."
"Well then, see, we're gonna work on that today." Mentor takes a step back, looking serious. "How have things been?"
"Worse." She puts some venom in her words, making sure he knows he's causing this— mental breakdown she's having right now.
He smiles. "Good."
Good?!
"It'll help out your senses. Now, today? We're gonna work on your abilities. Now, if you will, walk to the end of the room."
"Okay," she mutters, setting the camera down.
"As Victoria instructed you," Mentor goes on, "you have to learn to feel. You have to learn to feel trust. This world- this world that you're so used to, you're so familiar with—" He sighs. "It's not how you imagined it at all."
Sunshine stands across the living room, staring at him. "Is that what we're working on today..?"
"Not quite." Mentor crosses his hands together. "This is much more simple. What I need you to do is I need you to move from there—" He motions toward her position, "to here—" Mentor waves his hand by his side, "next to me, without walking."
"...without walking?"
"That's right. Without walking."
"Can I... jump?"
Mentor has that aggravated look again. "No," he says. "You need to bend the space between you and I, and come next to me."
"Bend the space between us?" Sunshine repeats dubiously. "Like— a gap between us?"
"Exactly." He shifts on his weight.
"Exactly, okay," she mutters sarcastically. "Well. I have no idea how to do that!"
Mentor holds out a hand. "All you have to do is concentrate."
"Okay. I'll concentrate." Sunshine claps her hands and breathes in, fidgeting. She snorts again because this— this is truly unbelievable. She still has doubts about even being a Luiseach, I mean, what if she doesn't have powers? Besides, she probably looks like an idiot right now.
She starts to laugh.
"Look, Sunshine." Mentor frowns deeply. "Much like your abilities— the light inside you— it just, it'll happen. This ability, it'll just happen. And all you have to do...is focus." He swings his arms out to his side and steps back, more annoyed than before. "That's it."
"Okay. Okay," she says, huffing.
He turns and walks out the door.
Sunshine blinks a few times and sighs, walking over to the camera. "Apparently I have the ability to transport myself places."
Wonderful.
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
It's night again, nearly a week after her 'training' with the Mentor, and the paranormal activity is starting again.
Sunshine jumps when a lamp clashes downstairs. She narrows her eyes. "Mom?"
"Everything's fine, Sunshine. Come down," Kat calls back.
That doesn't sound like my mom. Ice flicks through her veins and she pads into the hallway, looking down the dark, creepy stairwell. Is this another instance of— of telling what's real apart from what's paranormal? Maybe this is paranormal?
"She is mine," a male voice snarls in her ear, and Sunshine jumps. The door— as usual— slams shut, and Jesus she's gonna have to face her fears again, isn't she?
Sunshine breathes heavily as she walks down. "Open the door!" she commands, pushing as much force into her voice as she can.
It opens in front of her, but now the kitchen lights are off. No one is here.
"Mom?" she asks. Sunshine's eyes widen when she sees the same ghost from before— the old lady in her white dress— hovering in the living room, dark hair covering her face. Dark eyes shine back.
The lamp next to one of the windows begins to rock back and forth. "I come from hell," the demonic male growl returns, and the lamp topples over, showering the room in darkness.
"Agh!" Sunshine trips over her own legs and grunts when she hits the floor. In the red light of her camera, she sees the flashlight reflected off the floor. She must've dropped it last time and forgotten to find it. Sunshine reaches forward and grabs it, clicking the light on as she jumps to her feet, camera in hand.
Again, no one is here.
Sunshine groans softly and places a palm on her forehead. "Jesus..." she mutters. The headache has returned, pulsing and beating under her skull, and she could just about fall over and pass out right now. Sunshine turns into the kitchen and screams when Kat, Nolan, and Uncle Tommy stand before her, mouths gaping open into terrifying yells, the plant compost dripping from their jaws.
She reels back and runs up the stairs back into her room, slamming the door shut behind her. Sunshine slides into her bed and squeezes her eyes shut when the door rattles. "Who's there? What do you want?" she asks harshly.
Sunshine hears something under her bed. She freezes, turns her head, and screams when pale bony arms crawl from underneath her.
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
Sunshine's fine. She's totally fine. Everyone really doesn't need to be here to support her for last night's events, but...they are.
Great.
Kat smiles next to Sunshine. "We'll protect you."
"Keep you company, mostly," Nolan nods, sitting on the other side of the wrap-around couch. His hair has grown out a bit.
"Good," Uncle Tommy says beside Nolan, pushing his head up by his hand, "you're not really good for protecting anything." He laughs and Nolan glares at him.
"Neither are you," she mutters.
"Hey!" Uncle Tommy laughs, looking at Sunshine. "I totally saved your life, like, twice now."
Kat sighs. "No, we're just here to support you. We don't want you to be.... afraid." She smiles softly and hugs her. "Last night was scary for you."
"Well, yes, it was. But..." Sunshine shakes her head and pushes her fingers back up to her forehead. Why does she feel so dizzy?
"Just to be clear," Uncle Tommy says, "that wasn't us, last night. We saw the video and none of us were there."
"I have a perfect alibi," Nolan nods seriously, looking at Sunshine. "At the time I was— I was in your kitchen— with— stuff in my mouth." He smiles because oh, he's funny, apparently.
Uncle Tommy laughs and rolls his eyes. "Shut your face, dude."
Nolan grins like a little kid and they both giggle together.
"Anyways..." Sunshine says, smiling softly. Something inside her just...feels weird. Feels wrong. She can't put her finger on it, but it's making her so tired and she hardly wants to talk to anyone anymore.
And now Nolan will be running his mouth off forever and will never leave her side again. Great.
"I wonder if it's something the Mentor sent over," Kat suggests.
Yeah. Maybe.
Can she refund that?
