Chapter 52

So. Victoria's here. She wants to talk about.... something. Sunshine isn't sure what of, but she really hopes it concerns Victoria's breaking and entering of their house. Seriously. It's creepy.

Sunshine peels open the door and shakily breathes in. "Hi," she says to her.

"Hey." Victoria walks inside.

"Come on in," she mutters. "Just...seat yourself."

Victoria sits on the gray wrap-around couch.

"Uhhh.." Sunshine walks towards her. "Do you want a— water, or juice, or—?"

"No."

"I made cookies if you—"

"No." Victoria almost looks amused.

Sunshine sighs. "Okay." She sits to the right of Victoria, turning her body to face her. Silence. "So, uh," she says. "I just wanted to— invite you here, I guess, and ask you some questions that— I know I'm wondering, but— other people, y'know, are wondering too, so..."

She looks down. "Which is, I guess, start with the really obvious ones, uh— do you wanna hurt me?" She says it in an almost fearfully anticipated way.

Victoria shakes her head, like she can't even imagine doing something like that. "No. Of course not." She pauses, then her voice quiets as she looks away, "I never wanted to hurt anyone."

Sunshine stumbles over her words when Victoria looks back over at her. "In— that video, the one with Anna, and with— how do you know Anna?"

Victoria breathes in deeply. "Well. Sunshine, this— this might be hard for you to understand, but, the reason I know Anna is because... she's my daughter."

"She's your—" Sunshine's eyes widen. "She's your daughter, but— in— in that film, and all the videos—"

Victoria closes her eyes with regret and reopens them, staring at Sunshine:

"—you— you're— it's so old, and you're young right now.."

She nods slowly. "I know— I know this must be very confusing to you, but— I'm stuck here and I did something horrible—" Victoria's voice shakes, "to my daughter. Something I can't take back. And it's hard for me to even understand sometimes, because at the time I thought I knew what was right and what I was doing and— it turns out that I didn't know anything at all. Anna's father was....completely evil, and I just went along with it, thinking that it was the right thing, and it was not."

Victoria breathes in sharply as she continues. "And because of me, she's stuck too, but she's not as stuck as I am. I can't move forward. I can't pass on like she has the option of doing." Victoria looks down, clearly trying not to let her emotions bleed through. "So....I wanted to somehow help her, protect her in some way, so I made a deal. And...that deal's that I would...be stuck. But I could watch over her. Try and help her. But I can only do so much. You remember how— how I told you about being an Awaken?"

Sunshine thinks of Nolan and nods slowly. "Y-yeah."

"How you acquire certain paranormal powers? As you've seen, I have acquired some of those, but I haven't acquired all of the ones that I need." Victoria looks up at Sunshine. "But you can help her."

"Help her—" Sunshine shakes her head. "How?"

"I need your help, Sunshine," Victoria says roughly, sniffling. "You don't realize that you have a lot more powers than you are aware of. You just don't know how to use them. I don't have those powers. But— I need your help, so that I can help Anna."

"I— I'll help, I just don't know how, I— I don't even know how to use my powers."

"I'm gonna introduce you to someone. It was my Mentor that— tried to make things a little more clear for me. They'll tell you what to do."

"O-okay," Sunshine nods, shaking. "Okay, I—"

"That's enough." Victoria stands and goes toward the door, closing it behind her.

Well.

It looks like she's gonna help Victoria and Anna and need a Mentor.

She's slightly confused.
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
"All right, guys, so." Sunshine is sitting in the study where she had filmed her introduction with Nolan in the BEK film. And guess who's sitting right beside her? Yep, you guessed it. He's wearing a gray sweater over a green shirt and has blue jeans on. At least he's discarded his black leather jacket for once in his life. His ashen-brown hair is slicked back with gel or something she really doesn't care about. He's really trying to hard to be manly, with the way he's sitting and acting and all that.

"Today we're here with the— man—" She gestures to Nolan. The YouTube people will love this. He waves with a smile, "you've been all— wanting to see again— man? Boy? Boy? Man? Are you a man or a boy?" Sunshine looks over at him.

Nolan's smile slowly fades and he scrutinizes her for her comment. "Man," he says. "I'm a man."

She looks at him dubiously.

"I'm a man, why would you ask that?" Nolan's voice gets high and he shrugs a shoulder back. "A man." He narrows his eyes.

"You just seems like you're on the— the pathway to becoming a man, you're not— you're like on the bridge, like, mmmehh." Sunshine makes a vague motion with her hands.

Nolan looks at her like she's stupid and he's needing to prove his point. "No, I'm a man. I've been a man since 1967. How can you be 65 years old and not a man?"

"That was quick math, that's nice, let's clear that up everyone." She looks at the camera and Nolan looks unamused. "He is not 65."

He looks at Sunshine but side-eyes the camera. "Okay, well you don't have to tell them—"

"He's not, he was joking, 'kay?"

"Shh, shhhh, shh," Nolan says as Sunshine again gestures to him. "I wanna be the best looking 65 year old man on the planet." He swings his head and grins.

She stares at him. "You're stupid."

His smile drops.

"So how about you tell everyone where you've uh— you've been, Nolan. Go ahead. Tell them."

"Well." Nolan dramatically clears his throat. "Y'know, a boy's gotta— a man's gotta eat."

Sunshine raises her brows at the camera and rolls her eyes.

"And in order to eat, a man needs to work. In order to— work— a man needs to find a job, I found a job."

She looks slightly amused, trying not to smile. "Tell everyone where you work."

He looks her up and down. "No."

"Yes."

"Wh- why?"

"Because. Tell everyone. Just tell them." They exchange a glance and Sunshine smirks.

Nolan mumbles something unintelligible to the camera.

"Did you hear that?" she says sarcastically to the camera. "I don't, I don't think they heard that."

"I work at a hotdog cart!" he says, waving his hands.

Sunshine laughs.

"I'm a sausage salesman, slinger of—"

"He sells—"

"Sausage," they say in unison.

She raises a brow. "Stop rhyming. Or, I guess it's not rhyming."

"It's alliteration."

"Whatever. Anyway," Sunshine says louder, "so while you've been gone, selling....hotdogs..."

"Mmhm."

"Victoria has come and gone and gone and come and—" She looks at him. "She's bringing me a Mentor."

Nolan raises his brows and nods slowly. "You get a Mentor?"

"Yeah, I do."

He looks jealous. "What do Awakens get?"

"Nothing."

"Well—" Nolan looks away, disappointed. "Oh."

"Didn't you read? Luiseach gets a Mentor and a Protector."

"Yeah, yeah." He shakes his head and smiles condescendingly. "You're very special."

"Mmhm. I know. If you were around more often, you'd find out."

"Well," he defends, "this place is terrifying. Creepy. It's— I don't know, it makes me just feel uncomfortable."

"Why do you—" Sunshine jerks when a small, pink-laced drawer falls on her. She groans.

Nolan leans forward and touches her arm, then retracts his hand and points toward the drawer. "See, that's the— sort of thing that I'm talking about, see, with the— falling and—" Sunshine makes her way behind the camera and Nolan stands, putting fallen books back in their places, "ridiculous goings on of the poltergeest."

"Poltergeest? That was your word?"

He looks back at her.

"Things aren't gonna happen, okay?"

Nolan makes a face like he already knows. "I am aware of that, but it seems to be happening more often recently."

"Oh, whatever. Quit whining." She pads to her chair. "Well, I feel like this has already been much too long of a video everyone, so." She sits down and Nolan does too, but he's out of the shot. "Thanks for joining us. Again."

Nolan sticks his hand in the frame of the camera and waves.

Sunshine leans to the side. "It's over here now," she says, pushing his hand away, "they probably can't even see you. Bye, guys."

Nolan waves again.

⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
Sunshine's casually reading in the living room in the middle of the afternoon when she hears footsteps upstairs. She grabs her camera and listens hard, then hears them again. Oh, shit. Anna?

Might as well call out now. "Anna?" she asks loudly. "Is that you?"

No answer, of course.

She feels like she should go upstairs, but is that really a good idea? No, probably not. The second she makes it to the top the door at the bottom will slam behind her. "Anna?" Sunshine calls again, making her way into the kitchen.

Heavy knocking at the door causes Sunshine to breathe in harshly. She narrows her eyes and looks out the window. Oh. My. God.

"Hey!" Sunshine says, opening the door.

"Hey, how you doing?" Uncle Tommy asks with a bright smile.

"Good, how are you?"

He walks inside. "Good."

She grins like a little kid getting candy and they tightly hug. "He's back."

"Hi," Tommy giggles. "It's good to see you."

"Good to see you too."

"Whatcha been up to?" He leans against the wall.

"Oh, not much."

"Yeah."

"Yeah, I mean." Sunshine shrugs. "Have you watched the videos at all? Victoria and..."

"No, I've been watching a lot of Whitney Houston videos actually." He smiles.

"A lot of—" She rolls her eyes. "Makes sense, I guess, I'll forgive you."

He laughs. "Okay, thanks."

"Yeah, no problem." Sunshine smiles. "So...yeah."

"So Victoria...?"

"Yeah, she's back and she's crazy and yelling—"

Tommy looks slightly concerned.

"—and then she's fine, and then she's bringing me a Mentor, and then she's—"

Tommy looks confused and tries not to laugh as he listens along.

"—uh, y'know, I have to help her and—"

The front door closes on its own.

"Oh." Tommy makes a face as he looks at the door. "Some things never change."

She sighs.

Tommy clicks his tongue. "It's good to be back, kiddo."

"I know," Sunshine chuckles.
