Chapter 5
The whole group in the ballroom began to freak out. No matter how much her mother tried to calm the guests, they all wanted to get the heck out of there. They had probably heard the stories about the house. They all made a mad dash for the door. Marion and Jasper held hands as they went outside too. There in the distance, Jasper pointed to the old mine. It was lit up, it looked like someone was in there.
"Should we go check it out?" Marion asked her new husband.
"It might bring more light to this mystery." Jasper nodded and they both got into his car and took off in the direction of the mine.
Jasper was focused on driving but Marion could feel something rumbling. Looking to Jasper she began to think what she thought, an earth quake. Jasper tried to control the car but a hole opened up and swallowed the car and them before he could turn away. Jasper moved in front of Marion and held her as they felt the car crash into the contents of the hole. A loud crash later, Marion looked up and saw Jasper looking down at her.
"You OK?" Jasper asked her clearly concerned with her safety.
"Yeah, are you? Oh my god are you hurt?" Marion asked as she searched him but only found a couple of scratches.
"Nah, I'm fine. Come on let's get out of this" Jasper said as he maneuvered himself and kicked the windshield out.
He went out first and then let his wife out of the car the same way. Stopping on the hood they both looked down to see they had landed in a ravine.
"You know how to swim?" Marion asked Jasper who nodded.
"Yeah, you?"
"I'd be a mermaid if I could be." Marion chuckled trying to make light of the situation.
"Come on, maybe we can find a path." Jasper laughed.
They carefully entered the water, knowing full well they had no idea what was in the water. It turned out to only be about thigh deep to Jasper but waist deep on Marion. Holding her hand, Jasper led her through the water.
"You can't tell me all these are coincidences." Marion pointed out.
"I'm starting to believe in the afterlife." Jasper replied.
They kept going for what seemed to be miles. The water stayed at the same level but they had no idea where they were. No flashlight or phone to call for help. They were stuck.
"Come on, Marion we can make it." Jasper encouraged her.
"I know, It's just this darn dress is so heavy." Marion sighed discouraged.
Jasper stopped, fished for something in his pocket. He pulled out a pocket knife and cut the dress just below her knees. She felt so much lighter and gave him a kiss to show him she was grateful. They began walking again when they noticed what appeared to be building up ahead.
"Are you seeing what I'm seeing?" Jasper asked Marion.
"A bunch of old building? Yeah I see them. This must be the part of the town that sunk in the explosion." Marion answered.
The old buildings were in a dilapidated state, no doubt due to the years of being stuck in the ravine. As they walked past the buildings, Marion could make out small light green outlines looking through the windows of the buildings. Jasper gripped her hand as he tried to find a way out. Suddenly they both heard what could only be described as the whistle of a train. Both looked behind them to see nothing, there were no tracks or anything where they were and no railroad anywhere near there.
"We have to get out of here." Jasper said as he moved to walk forward only to be stopped by a force that did not seem to exist.
"What? How are we trapped? There isn't anything there!" Marion yelled as she began to bang on the invisible wall.
"I'm still new to the paranormal stuff." Jasper replied as he tried to move back they way they came but he too was met with an invisible wall.
"We don't take kind to intruders here." a ghostly voice called out from the darkness of the ravine.
Suddenly what appeared surrounding them was something Marion nor Jasper would ever forget for as long as they both lived. Backing up into Jasper's arms, Marion was shocked to see they were surrounded by glowing outlines of people. They could barely see any features of the people, only their bones and whatever was left of their clothes.
"We didn't mean to intrude, there was an earthquake and we fell down here." Jasper spoke up as he held Marion in his arms.
"Sounds like what happened to us, but we all know that ain't the truth. Damn Ravenswood got greedy and trapped us all down here!" another male ghostly voice called out from the crowd. "You wreak of Ravenswood blood girl."
With the last word spoken, the crowd of ghosts parted and a almost completely skeletal figure walked forward. Marion's eyes widened. She had no idea how any of this was possible and she began to shake in Jasper's arms.
"No, her name is Turner. This is my wife." Jasper spoke up in her defense.
The skeleton lowered it's head and looked as though he was looking at Marion's hand, where her wedding finger sat snugly on her ring finger. The skeleton's head then looked back up at them.
"So she is, don't change the stench of her blood-" the voice spoke but suddenly a louder voice called out.
"It's not her! That is not Melanie!"
The whole crowd of spirits then turned around. There standing as if he were human just as much as she and Jasper were, was a man. Marion couldn't make him out too well due to the distance between them. The figure walked forward.
"I hate Henry Raveswood just as much as you do, however that doesn't mean all that carry that bastards name are just like him." the figure said and then looked at Jasper and Marion. "You do look a hell of a lot like her though, forgive them, they blame all Ravenswood for the loss of their lives. I am Jake, Melanie's betrothed."
Snapping his ghostly fingers, the invisible around them shattered as though it were made of glass. Jake turned and whispered something to the ghosts and they all disappeared from Jasper and Marion's view.
"They won't bother you now. So who are you two and how the heck did you get down here?" Jake asked as though he was talking to an old friend.
"I'm Jasper and this is my wife Marion, she is your betrothed's great niece, they just inherited the house and we were driving towards the mine because we saw a strange light coming from it. However a sudden earth quake happened and our car ended up stuck down here in the ravine." Jasper explained to Jake who nodded as he listened to the story.
"Damn that man, even dead he still causes chaos. Where did you two get hitched?" Jake asked trying to distract everyone from Henry Ravenswood.
"At the house." Marion replied sheepishly.
Jake was completely shocked by her response.
"That may have been just the thing to wake him up pissed off, he didn't want anyone in that house to marry, including Melanie and I. I swear I tried everything to impress that man, even showed him the gold that was further up the mine that no one knew of. Bastard had a plan, he blew this place with double the TNT needed and well you see the product of what happened. How he got away I got no clue." Jake sighed.
"He got away?" Jasper questioned.
"He sure ain't down here with us, trust me, those spirits would have sent him to hell themselves if they had their way." Jake responded. "I loved Marion so much, I just wanted to show Henry I could care for her, I could provide for her. Look where that got me."
"She still waits for you, I've seen her in that house. I'm thinking she is trapped there. I don't know how to set her free." Marion said as she carefully moved just a tad away from Jasper showing Jake she trusted him.
"That poor woman, he tried to sell her off four times, then the men just ''mysteriously disappear''? I loved her since we were kids and every time she told me there was a new suitor that just made me work harder in the mine to show her arse of a father I was better than them. She was and always will be my one true love." Jake smiled when he talked about Melanie.
"What if we moved your body out of here and to a proper grave close to the house?" Jasper asked trying to come up with ideas.
"I don't even know where it is, so many bodies and bones down here, we don't know which goes with what." Jake sighed.
"Do you have anything? Any possession at all I can take to the house? Maybe that way you can visit?" Marion asked.
Jake nodded and motioned for Marion to follow him, Jasper and Marion followed Jake in the direction he was going. After about ten minutes of walking, they stopped and Jake pointed down. Marion bent down and dusted the ground. There was a small emerald necklace. She gently picked it up.
"It was my wedding gift to her, in three days we were gonna get hitched, until the explosion." Jake sighed. "Take it to the house, then maybe I can reunite with her, even just for a second."
Marion smiled and nodded, she would do whatever she could to help out her great aunt.
"How do we get out of here?" Jasper asked looking up.
"You two are really gonna have to trust me now. I can get you up there but I can't leave the ravine. Can you two trust me to get you up there?"
Both Jasper and Marion nodded their heads, he had saved them from the other ghosts so why would he risk their safety now? Jake took a hold of Jasper's hand and before he knew what to do, Jake was lifting Jasper out of the ravine. Jasper closed his eyes and said a silent prayer.
"Don't worry, I ain't gonna drop ya." Jake chuckled as he safely put Jasper on the dirt ground above the ravine. "Be right back."
Jake appeared before Marion. He offered her his ghostly hand. Marion took his hand and gave him a friendly smile.
"My aunt was right in falling for you, even as a ghost you are a good man Jake." Marion told Jake as she hugged his ghostly form and closed her eyes.
Jake hadn't felt someone care about him in a long time let alone call him a good man. He grinned as he took her to the same spot Jasper was waiting and carefully handed her to Jasper who looked at Jake grateful.
"Go to the north, that's where the house is. As soon as you hand Melanie the necklace tell her to call for me." Jake requested as he disappeared from their sight.
Jasper gently sat Marion on the ground and both started north. They had found some of the answers they were looking for but also opened up a whole new lot of questions as well.
