Chapter 3
Marion was sweeping the ballroom that had a large organ right up against the wall of the far end of the room. It gave her major 'Phantom of the Opera' vibes. She couldn't help but try to ignore it as she tried to clear the leaves as well as the dirt and dust from the room. This was the last room she was to clean. Her mother insisted she could finish the other few rooms that were left and she knew, it was better to just listen and do what her mother said, rather than start an argument. This room was the biggest in the house, obviously this would be the place where all the parties would be hosted.
After she finished sweeping the floor, she began to dust the frames. Wishing she had done that before she had swept because now it meant she would have to sweep it again. Once she came to the portrait of her great grandfather, she gulped as she wiped the large foreboding frame of his stern picture. Coming to the middle royal symbol in at the bottom of the frame, she felt she must have pushed to hard because she felt it give in and something pop. Jumping back afraid it might come crashing down from the wall, she waited only it didn't move. The symbol was still in tact and fine.
Marion then heard what sounded like a door opening, turning around she saw a bookshelf was slowly moving aside and making way to what appeared to be a secret passage. Grabbing a flashlight from a nearby table, she went to the opening and shined the light inside. She felt like Luther from the movie 'The Ghost and Mr. Chicken" when he was staying the night in a haunted house for a story. Summoning up the same courage she felt he had that night, she took two steps onto the stone staircase only have someone touch her arm and make her jump.
"Whoa, Whoa. Sorry, didn't mean to scare you." the man behind her chuckled.
Turning around, Marion shined her flashlight at the man who held up his hand to block the light. She carefully lowered it and looked at the man confused as to what he was doing let alone what he was doing in the house?
"Who are you, and what do you want?" Marion questioned.
"Sorry, my name is Jasper. I am an actor your mother sent up here to help you with the room. I was finished for today so your mother really insisted you needed help. Gotta say I agree with her, this room is huge. What's up there?" Jasper questioned looking past Marion and to the stone staircase.
"I don't know, I think I accidentally activated a secret passage. This place may have more to it than meets the eye. I'm going to go up there and see what is up there, just like I was going to do before you scared me." Marion said as she turned and started back up the stairs.
She could hear the sound of Jasper's shoes on the stone behind her and though she didn't know why, she felt comforted in the fact that he was following her. It was better to have someone come along, rather than risk finding on god knew what wherever she was going. The walls were made of the same timber as the outside of the house. Once they came to the top of the stairs, it seemed they were in some kind of study. A larger portrait of her great grandfather, was hanging from the wall.
"He looks so serious." Jasper commented.
"I thought so too, glad I never had to meet him." Marion agreed as she went to the desk and began to look through old ledgers. "These are about the mine, all the money he made from them and the loss as well."
"Mining is serious work, make one wrong judgement call and you could kill a lot of people including yourself." Jasper nodded in agreement with her.
Marion tested the lamp on the table and was shocked when it too worked perfectly fine. Jasper came to the desk beside her. Didn't seem like there was much evidence there until they found his personal ledger, with the families account balances. Blowing the dust off it, Marion looked to Jasper.
"Should I really be looking at this?" Marion questioned Jasper.
"He's your relative, family is family after all." Jasper shrugged.
Marion opened and the first couple pages. then towards the bottom of the fifteenth page she saw something odd. a large sum of money deposited to the account and beside the mark was the symbol of a heart...why a heart?
"Why would he put a heart next to a deposit?" Marion questioned.
"He really loved money?"
She turned a few more pages and saw the same thing again. and then two more times on two other pages. There was never any explanation for why the money was put into the account only the symbol of a heart...four times. Marion began to wonder if maybe Henry tricked the men into putting Melanie's name as the only beneficiary for their life insurances? If that were true, then this meant all the money from those men went right to Henry, not to Melanie.
"You went quiet all the sudden, what happened?" Jasper asked.
Suddenly the light slowly extinguished, Marion went to Jasper as if it were instinct. The room became colder and both of them knew their presence there was not wanted, they were intruding on a space that was to be private, perhaps never found again. Marion gripped Jasper's hand as a low laughter began to reside in the room. Looking around both of them could not tell where the laugh was coming from. Jasper grabbed Marion and led her back down the stairs, they both felt as though they were being chased, at the second to last step, they both jumped out of the secret passage, turning back from their landing on the ground they both watched as the bookcase moved back to it's proper place.
"What the hell was that?" Jasper asked as he looked down at Marion.
"I have no idea, but whatever it was, it didn't want us up there." Marion sighed as she relaxed her head back on the floor. "I'm Marion by the way."
"I figured as much, Marion do you think that was a ghost?" Jasper asked as he continued to watch her.
"I wish I could say for sure, I really don't know what to make of this place." she sighed wishing she could make sense of this, any of it at this point.
"Gotta admit, I didn't think taking this acting job would be this interesting. Now I'm glad I took it." Jasper chuckled.
A few hours later, Jasper and Marion were moping the beautiful floors of the ballroom when the doors opened and there stood Jackie. Neither of them were sure what kind of mood she was in, but she didn't look happy or mad. Jackie cleared her voice as she looked to her daughter.
"The model bride and model groom were in a horrid accident!" she cried as fake tears streamed down her face. "Whatever shall we do?"
Marion rolled her eyes and continued on her chore. Jasper shrugged and told her there were quite a few actresses who would fill in for the bride and even more actors who could fill in for the groom. Jackie probably didn't even listen to him, she already wanted her beautiful daughter to be the bride and after giving Jasper a good look over she knew he would be a perfect groom.
"No, I've decided. Marion will be the bride and you Jasper will be the groom!" Jackie smiled and walked out of the room.
Marion dropped her mop and looked to Jasper. A man she had just met. He was wearing jeans, a white tank top with a short sleeved dress shirt but casual over the top of it. His hair was to his shoulders and was a mix of caramel and brown. When she looked into his eyes though, she felt he was a kind and gentle soul. Still she didn't want to marry anyone, she wasn't even dating and now her mother just said she wanted her to marry a complete stranger.
Jasper sat on the front porch and was helping Marion paint it a white color. She hadn't said much, she was still probably in shock after what her mother said. From what Jasper heard it was just a photo shoot so he didn't know why she would be so upset, so he decided to ask her.
"It's just a photo shoot, does that really sound so bad?" Jasper asked and Marion paused her spot in painting.
"I know there is something else to it, she has some plan and unfortunately for you, now you are a part of said plan. Just hope it doesn't involve you being stuck here permanently like me." Marion replied with a sigh, then went back to painting.
"You think you are stuck here? Why is that?"
"My mom, she can't be trusted when she is left alone for too long, she's done some questionable things in the past when that happened."
Jasper could only imagine what Marion meant by that but he didn't want to press her for details if she didn't want to give them. After all they had just met today, he didn't have to learn everything about her in one day. Nodding, he went back to painting as well.
Two days had past and Jackie was now making Marion look through every wedding magazine she could find. The wedding dress had already been chosen so she was only looking for ideas for a hair style. still she couldn't help but feel bored with the whole situation. Walking through the field she could see people on set filming about the disaster explosion that happened here so many years ago. She could even see Jasper leaning against a post on the outside of the set that looked like a saloon. She watched as he was about to get into a 'fight' with one of the other actors.
She thought the fighting looked so fake that no one would believe the fight no matter what special affects were used. She chuckled as Jasper 'won' the 'fight'. Then rolled her eyes as just when the director called out cut, one of the saloon girls went over to him and was trying to talk him up, taking that as her sign to go, she stood from her spot and turned to make her way back to the house.
"Marion!" she heard a male voice call out from behind her.
Pausing, she looked back and saw Jasper running her way. Why was he coming after her? Finally he caught up to her and smiled but took a moment to gather his breath.
"Were you watching the scene?" Jasper asked as he wiped the sweat from his brow.
"Only the ''fighting'' as you would call it. Happy to see you won." Marion grinned as she saw the saloon girl making her way to them. "Your saloon girl is heading this way."
"Oh god, Shelby will not leave me alone no matter what I do. I've told her no and that I am not interested in her so many times I think my jaw might fall off." Jasper sighed.
Marion couldn't help but chuckle at what he just said, she knew he was funny and she was happy to have laughed for the first time in a long time. Finally the girl got to us and tried to wrap her arm through Jasper's but he side stepped her and moved beside Marion.
"You a new actress?" Shelby asked clearly threatened by Marion.
"No, I am not an actress. I am Marion Ravenswood. I am part of the family that allowed you to film here." Marion answered honest.
"Right, why was Jasper so keen to get to you?"
"I guess maybe he just wanted to talk to me? Why were you so keen on catching up with him? Usually if a guy runs from you it's a pretty clear sign he doesn't want a relationship with you." Marion shrugged.
Shelby scoffed as though she was surprised with what Marion had just told her. Jasper chuckled knowing what Marion had said was right. Marion could tell Shelby was getting more flustered by the second. Turning to Jasper she took his hand and decided to give lying a go, her mother was good at it then maybe so was she?
"Jasper and I just got engaged two days ago. So I'd really appreciate it if you stop chasing after him, it's just becoming embarrassing and sad." Marion smiled as Jasper played along.
"Engaged!!! I didn't know he was even dating anyone!!!" Shelby yelled.
"Yeah, we actually met a while back and she even gave me a heads up about the movie being filmed here. We just couldn't stay away from each other." Jasper smiled as he hugged Marion and placed his chin on top of her head. "We are getting married at the house."
"She won't be enough for you, she's a country bumpkin and you are gonna be a star. Call me when you run away.'' Shelby winked and ran off in the opposite direction.
Jasper pulled away and looked down at Marion.
"Thanks for that, maybe I'll get a break now." Jasper shrugged.
"If not, come running to the house and I'll be there.'' Marion winked.
Jasper walked Marion back to the house but when they found the door already open both of them stood outside the door looking inside. The house was completely dark inside. Was someone in there waiting for Marion or had Jackie just left the house open, turned off all the lights and went to be? The later being nearly impossible since Marion knew her mother had a fear of the dark.
