Chapter 10
It was the night before the day before the wedding, Marion sat in the guest room and tried to keep calm. She would have to help in repeating everything Henry had done the first time. So, she made a list to make sure that she wouldn't forget anything. Something caught her attention in the mirror, and she looked up, on the other side she saw her mother looking around the room desperately calling out her name. Her mother was searching for her!
Jumping from the chair, she turned to leave her room only to hear what sounded like a fight coming from the back yard. Rushing to her window, she looked out to see Henry yelling at another young man who looked a lot like Henry. That must have been her grandfather, but younger. She watched as they fought with one another, apparently the young Ravenswood had a gambling problem and had used money his father had given to him for other purposes.
"You have had your last chance, Edward; I am cutting you off and sending you away. Never will you haunt the manor I have built. Melanie will take the house, the money and name. Never do I want to ever lay eyes on you again." Henry said and then turned and left the young man shocked.
"You will be cursed old man! Melanie will find out one of these days what you have truly done, and she will turn against you just like you turned against me! Four men go missing and no one asks questions isn't the suspicious thing fathers! It's the fact they all went missing under your hospitality. Let her find the ledger and know of you true deeds. That thunderbird curse will come back on you more than anyone." Edward said as he took his pocket watch, checked the time and laughed. "In the years to come, if Melanie isn't smart enough to find out the truth, one of my descendants will and they will end you in life or death."
Edward then turned and walked right out the gate, he didn't seem to care about losing the family name or money, but he knew the truth. He knew that his father had killed the other four suitors. He knew that he had collected the insurance money on all four of the missing men, but he wanted Melanie to find out. Since she didn't, he made a promise that one of his descendants would, which would be Marion.
Turning from the window, Marion's hand went to her chest. So, it was her grandfather that wanted her to find the truth. She felt confused and frustrated at the same time. She didn't even hear the knock on her door as Melanie opened the door and looked at the shocked Marion and quickly ran to her side.
"Marion, dear girl it looks like you've seen a ghost." Melanie said as she gently held Marion's arm as she slunk down against the wall.
In a manner of speaking, she was looking and talking to one. Melanie looked deeply concerned for Marion as she went to the water basin, wet and cloth as well as rang it out then brought it to Marion and began to gently dab her forehead.
"Please speak to me cousin." Melanie pleaded with Marion.
Marion blinked, finally realizing that she hadn't said a word to Melanie which only caused her to worry more.
"Forgive me cousin, I believe I saw a sight I was not meant to see. Edward has been thrown out by your father." she said as she watched Melanie become silent and slowly turn her attention away from Marion.
"Yes, Father told me that my brother had been spending too much money and that he would cut him off and send him away. I never thought that he would truly go through with it, mother will be devastated. Edward had many fights with my father but by the time mother became involved it would all work out. She returns tomorrow and no doubt she will want to go after Edward." Melanie said as she stood and tried to keep herself from crying.
Clearly Edward and Henry had a rocky relationship at best.
"Well, I hope things clear up and that he is able to return home for your wedding." Marion said trying to put a positive spin on the situation.
Melanie plopped down on the vanity stool and sighed.
"If there even is a wedding, the last four they all ran off, my father said they were un agreeable and that they had decided to venture off with others. If that is even a compelling cause." Melanie huffed in agitation.
"You didn't think that was odd? Maybe your father was lying to you?" Marion tested the waters to see how Melanie would reply.
"Oh, I know he did, I just can't prove it. If I could have had him thrown in jail a long time ago. Jake has even come up with a plan, he wants to meet up with us at midnight at the old shop. Please say you'll come with me Marion; I just don't know what else to do." Melanie asked Marion as she took her hand and held it in a pleading manner.
"Of course, I will go with you." Marion smiled and nodded in agreement.
Midnight was here and Melanie and Marion had managed to sneak out of the manor and get to the shop without being seen. Melanie shut the door behind them and locked it. Jake and Will as well as Jasper and Arthur were sitting at a table waiting for them. Melanie quickly went to Jake, and they embraced.
"Yes, Marion has already agreed to be the pretend Melanie while Will must take Jake's place as before. But it must be Jasper who acts as though he will be led into the observatory and be hung from the rafters." Arthur begins to speak a little louder to get everyone's attention.
This of course, confused poor Melanie and now she had to hear about what had to happen again as it had in the past and future. She was shocked and flabbergasted. They did however forget to tell her about the book her father had hidden that had the truth about the four other suitors.
"I can't believe it; I just can't believe it. I knew father never trusted the men but to want to kill them. How could he ever go that far?" Melanie wondered as she sat down. "All this to keep me there, to make sure I could never get away from him. Yet it seems like the past must repeat itself..."
Marion felt bad for everyone in the room, Jake would be hung again, Will would be thrown down a well and Arthur would be poisoned. Melanie also had to play her part of the jilted bride but now she knew the truth, she knew what would happen to Jake and everyone could tell it shook her to her core.
"Why can't we stop him? We know what will happen after all!" Melanie announced as she looked at the group.
"Doing that could harm the future, their future. It could make it so that Marion is perhaps never even born." Arthur speaks in a soft tone. "We couldn't take that chance."
Melanie looked at Marion with tears in her eyes and deep-down Marion wondered if helping them would be worth risking her life. She was about to take a breath when she felt Jasper put his hand on her shoulder.
"I have never thought so selfishly, forgive me Marion, I don't t know what I was thinking." Melanie said as she wiped the tears away with a handkerchief that Arthur had given her.
"I understand and I don't blame you for anything. I wish I could change this; I really do. I just don't see how I could without risking maybe my own life." Marion told Melanie as she walked up and took her hands in hers. "If I could and know for sure that I would be born, I would do it without thinking twice."
Melanie pulled Marion into her arms and hugged her. Knowing Marion was family, and she could ensure that she had a future made her feel happy. She knew there were dark times ahead and she hated her father even more now for his disastrous plan.
Arthur sat in the conservatory, he knew that he would be the first to be killed and he hated to think of what would happen if this time his brother succeeded in his plan. Sitting there with his legs crossed he looked out the window to the small mining town in the distance, none of them knew what was coming. Their death would happen that very day, the day of wedding in a sorry attempt to hide a body.
The door burst open and there stood Marion out of breath but with a look of determination on her face.
"I'll live in the future!" Marion smiled as she crossed her arms over her chest.
"How do you know that?" Arthur asked completely shocked.
Marion quickly ran to him and handed him an open letter that had just been delivered to the house. Arthur took it quickly and began to read it. His eyes widened as the words from the page all came together.
"He impregnated a local girl, she insists she wants nothing to do with him and will not hold him responsible for the child, she just wanted him to know he has an heir." Arthur finishes as he looked to Marion. "Well, I'll be damned, fate found a way to show you that changing this part of the past won't affect your future."
"Then I suggest we change it." Marion grinned at Arthur.
