Chapter Seven
Fred remained on the sofa sitting beside Bethany long after Judith had fallen asleep in her grandfather's recliner.
"I really did think the gift skipped over Judith, like it did with her father." Bethany said watching Judith adjust in her sleep, curling up with the quilt Norman had brought out for her.
Bethany turned to Fred. "What drew you to Judith?"
"To be honest, I was just hoping to find someone that could actually see me, or hear me for that matter. I was standing before my own grave when I saw her standing there. I noticed that she could hear me when I was talking out loud to myself. I recognized her from school-"
"But you two weren't friends."
"No, we weren't. I don't think I ever really spoke to Judith while we were in school, but uh...George..well, it was a different story there."
Bethany raised a brow. "George, your twin, what does he have to do with Judith?"
Fred grinned. "I guess you could say that Judith had a bit of an admirer back in school."
"Oh...your brother he...is that why you're back?"
"One of the reasons, he would never say anything to her when we were in Hogwarts. I never saw him as the shy type unless it was around her."
"That's so sweet."
"I want my family to be happy. I know it can't go back to the way things were, but I want all of them to be happy even if I'm not around."
"Well, you'll always be with them, in their hearts. It takes time for wounds to heal and you were a very important person in your family."
" I want to say goodbye to them properly."
"That's understandable. I know Judith can help you there, she's an absolute sweetheart. She just needs to adjust to all this. It's all new to her and it can be a very overwhelming experience. I remember my first encounter."
Fred faced the woman, interested to hear the story.
"I was six years old and it was my grandfather..."
Judith awoke to the pleasant smell of her grandfather's cooking the next morning. She sat up and found herself still in the recliner, her neck sore from the awkward position she had fallen asleep in. She didn't even remember falling asleep.
She groaned as her body ached as she stood up fully.
"Morning, dear." Bethany greeted her coming down the stairs. "Sleep well?"
"Sorta...think I messed up my neck though."
"I thought of moving you but you seemed rather content sleeping there."
"I'll be fine." she said before looking around. "Where's Fred?"
"I don't know, I haven't seen him this morning yet. I'm sure he'll be around."
Judith enjoyed a full breakfast with her grandfather while her grandmother was in the backyard doing something in the shed.
The side door opened and her brother Nathaniel walked in rubbing his hands together.
"Another chilly day out there?" Norman called to him.
"When isn't it cold around here?" Nathaniel said removing his coat. He nodded his head in greeting to Judith, who smiled before focusing on her spoonful of egg.
When they were younger, Nathaniel was a bit more vibrant and normally wore a smile, but once their mother left, he was incredibly serious and quiet.
Bethany came in, her forehead covered in dirt where Judith suspected she wiped at with a dirty hand.
"Oh hello Nathaniel, how are you sweetheart?"
"Fine."
"No work today?"
"Later on."
"My word, he is uptight."
Judith jumped as Fred appeared beside her in the empty chair eyeing Nathaniel.
Bethany smirked to herself as she left to the bedroom to clean up.
"Hush." Judith whispered to Fred.
Nathaniel looked up at her. "Who are you talking to?"
Norman walked over to Nathaniel with a plate of food and set it before the man.
"Didn't Judy tell you? She's one of you all now." he smiled warmly at his granddaughter.
"One of us...what does-" her brother stopped, his brown eyes locking on his sister. "You mean-"
"Yeah." Judith answered flatly.
"When did this happen?!" he demanded to know.
"A couple of days ago." she said.
"So they're here...in the house?! "
"Oh relax, Nathaniel." Bethany said returning with a clean forehead. "Don't go overreacting."
"Who is it?"
Once Judith revealed the name, Nathaniel still seemed slightly worked up, causing Fred to feel bad for Judith and her family. The three were happy enough people but Nathaniel came across as a paranoid individual with no sense of humor whatsoever.
Judith finished her breakfast quickly and told her grandparents that she had to return home to shower and change. But she was sure they picked up on the fact that she didn't want to be around her brother for a long period of time.
"Take care, dear." Bethany kissed her forehead. "You too, Fred."
"Don't worry, Mrs. Wagner, I'll take good care of Judith."
"Bye Nana." Judith hugged her grandfather. "Bye Poppa! Bye Nate."
"Bye sweetheart!" Norman called. "Make sure you come around this week, we'll do some metal work."
"I will!"
Judith apparated back to her home and stepped into the shower, while Fred remained outside in the small living room.
Drying off and getting dressed, Judith walked back out to find Fred sitting on the sofa humming to himself a whimsical tune.
"I'm sorry about my brother." she said to him leaning in the doorway.
"Sorry? Why are you sorry? He should be sorry."
"Well.." she walked over to him slowly. "He can be a bit of a killjoy."
"A bit?"
"He wasn't always like that. But Mum running off really just led him to distance himself from everyone. He holds a pretty big grudge against her."
"Why did she run off?"
"She couldn't handle Dad's death....she was crying all the time, absolutely miserable. I like to think she didn't want Nathaniel and I to see her in that state, so she left in the middle of the night."
"I'm sorry."
"No need to be. I enjoyed my childhood growing up with Nana and Poppa. They're really great."
"They seem to be...they remind me of...my parents."
Judith sat beside him.
"I'm going to help you, Fred. Even if people think I'm a raving lunatic, I will help you. If you want me to talk to George for you, I will. I just want you to understand that he may not be all that accepting of the idea of all this."
"All I ask is that we try."
