The elf sipped from her mug, refreshing clear water entering her mouth and sleeping down her throat. It wasn't cold like ice but it was not too warm but as long as it was fresh, she did not mind. Her mug moved back down as she set it back onto the circular wooden table.
Drake laughed, setting down his mug full of water after taking a drink. The male sitting across from him also chuckled away, taking a bit of a sugar cookie clasped in his hand, the crumbs sticking to his lips and falling into his mildly thick, short beard. At least none of them were drinking any alcohol, because when they had first arrived and were offered, she could see a bit of temptation spark in the ex-commanders emerald orbs.
"Have you ever noticed that every inn we go too, there is always a jar of cookies there?" Grayson spoke with his mouth full, crumbs falling from behind his lips and hitting the table, some being spat at his friend.
Drake turned away, grossed out but another laugh had already risen from his throat. "Swallow your food before you speak! We've been over this!"
The blonde laughed again, sipping from his drink as the Enderman hybrid continued. Mia laughed along, her fist rising up and covering her mouth. Her cheeks flushed as her chest grew heavy with giggles. Like old times, she mocked them for being like "a bickering old married couple." Drake rolled his eyes, but his warm smile never left from his cheeks. He ignored her statement and continued on.
Drake tilted his head, a warm gaze in his mismatched eyes. "Yeah. I suppose that it is strange that there are always cookie jars around these places. It's like the Paganum are just waiting for you to show up and take 'em!" He lifted up his mug and took another sip.
Mia's smile grew wider as the boy's shared another heartfelt laugh. She always found pleasure when they interacted in such a heartfelt, playful way. It was a nice change from the stress and mind shattering revelations that they suffered while being hunted by a demon and an entire nation that's our for their guts.
Both of them bought her this warm feeling that she had never experienced before she got to know the two of them. She felt like she belonged and after so many years of abuse at the empire...she felt loved and cared for. And Drake and Grayson were there whenever she needed them. They gave her that love and care that she so desperately needed...and she never knew that without them that she was breaking inside.
"So..." She said, trying hard not to blush. "...What are the plans for tomorrow, since we're staying here for the night?"
Drake answered. "Well, we still have to make sure that you're feeling alright. How is that arm of yours?"
Mia gazed down at her arm, wrapped in bandage tape with a bit of red visible on it's white surface. The empire had gotten the better of them a day and a half ago, with a mercenary firing an arrow and landing the lucky shot right in her arm. She was lucky that Drake had the supplies to mend her, and took out that mercenary just before things went too far. Not only all of that, but the health potions he gave her and the magic he used while the poison was coursing through her veins helped her heal.
She tried not to scratch at it. "It's fine. I'm doing a lot better."
Drake nodded, his human cheek becoming rosy while his Ender cheek had a barely noticeable purple hue beneath the black scale like skin. "That's good. I was worried."
Grayson looked over, taking notice of the pink on her pale cheeks. He smiled and opened his mouth but his words got caught in his throat. He closed his mouth and shook his head. His cheeks grew pink, his stomach feeling like it was twisting. Drake and Mia looked up as he stood and pushed himself away from the table.
"Do you guys smell that?" He spoke hastily, sweat forming in his pores as nerves consumed him. "I'm gonna step outside and get some fresh air."
The hybrid and elf watched as he began to walk away. Mia sniffed the air, hoping that Grayson didn't blow one but nothing in the air smelt foul other than the faint aroma of liquor. Drake knew that something was up. They both knew. Drake turned to Mia, listening as she asked what Grayson's problem was. Drake only stood and took a few steps forward as he watched Grayson move along. He turned his head, his eyes resting on Mia's gentle gaze.
He smiled at Mia, a warm pink coloration in both the girl's and the hybrid's cheeks. "I'll go check up on him. You stay here and watch over our food. Is that okay with you?"
Mia nodded. "Yeah. I'm fine with that."
Drake's smile widened then turned and followed his friend to catch up to him, but Grayson was already next to the exit. The hybrid watched Grayson open the door in the front of the inn and step out. He pushed past the Paganum to get to his friend, but Grayson closed the door on him without noticing that he was there. Drake growled but quietly shook it off before opening the door.
Drake opened the door and stepped out, his eyes resting on his blonde friend that sat on the wood and gazed out at the sun setting beyond the forest, it's orange-golden glow slowly overtaking the blue of the sky. Grayson sat with his legs resting on the steps, the look in his emerald eyes making it apparent that he was in deep thought. The light shimmered in his green orbs, fading once he closed his eyes and sighed.
"Grayson? You alright?" Drake asked, not raising his voice too high.
Grayson turned his head to glance over his shoulder. He put on weak smile then turned back to his previous position. Drake lowered a brow, wondering what thoughts were going through his comrades head. He usually never acted this way, and it was out of character as far as the hybrid was concerned.
His brow came back up as Grayson spoke. "Drake...can I ask you something?"
Drake walked up to his friends side, looking out into the forest before them. It was a relaxing setting. He bent his knees, getting down and sitting next to Grayson with his long legs bending even more as he set them on the step below. He put his arms onto his lap, his fingers locking together. His eyes fixated onto Grayson, his hair on the human side of his head falling over his face.
"Sure thing. What's the matter? You seem...distracted." Drake laid it out simply.
Grayson gave a little shrug of his shoulder, more like a minor nervous twitch. His eyes opened, pupils small until they quickly readjusted to the light. His pale cheeks had an unusual faint coloration of pink like blood surfacing below his skin. His tongue was dry and his chest ached as he tried to speak his mind. Eventually he was finally able to force the words out of his mouth before his throat felt like it had closed up.
"I-I...I think I have...feelings for Mia..." Drake's eyes widened, his mouth opening slightly but he let Grayson continue.
"I don't know if she'll like me back." He chuckled. "I know that I should just tell her how I feel. I was straight forward with Clar' before we were married, but... I feel like with Mia, I just...get choked up."
Drake looked down, his eyes heavy. His stomach felt like it had dropped. His fingernails dug into his hands and a lump formed in his throat. A chill ran through his body, hoping that Grayson had not noticed any of this. His human cheek blushed red while his Enderman side blushed a deep purple. His heart was racing and was aching.
Of course. Of course he likes her too... Why wouldn't he?
He tried to speak but he felt like he couldn't breathe. He felt strangled by the shock. "Um... Maybe you should just...be up front with her." He tried to ignore the pain in his heart from his own words.
Grayson huffed out a long sigh, taking Drake's advice to mind. What if Mia did not like him back that way? He tried to push back the anxiety but it always seemed to resurface despite his efforts. He turned his head to look at his friend, noticing that Drake seemed to be staring off into space. Now he was the one trapped in a void of thought.
"I guess. I'll at least wait for the perfect setting! You know, away from all of the Paganum." Grayson laughed, his laughter pulling Drake back to reality.
The hybrid turned his head and gave a weak smile. "Yeah...I suppose."
Grayson frowned, knowing that something was off with Drake. It was like their roles had reversed in just under a minute. He playfully and gently hit Drake on the back of his shoulder, telling him to go back inside with him. The hybrid did not budge for a moment, taking what seemed to be a few minutes before he finally stood and towered over the blonde. Grayson began to walk back to the door, his arm extending to grab the handle until...
"Grayson...I-I..."
The ex-commander turned, tilting his head with both of his brows lowering. "What?"
Drake hesitated. He opened his mouth but nothing came out. "...Nothing. I just want you guys to be happy." He smiled but his eyes hid emotional pain.
Grayson put his arm on his hip, knowing that Drake was not one to act like this. It was peculiar he started acting this way after he admitted his attraction towards their female companion. He studied Drake's completion, easily able to see his discomfort, sorrow, and possibly...frustration or anger. He swallowed a lump in his throat, a theory coming to his mind.
He mumbled but his voice reached Drake's ears. "You like her too... Don't you?"
Drake struggled to breathe for a moment. He gave no reply but Grayson saw the slight nod that he was not sure if Drake made intentionally or not. He knew it to be true. He and his best friend both shared the same love for the same woman. A heavy feeling filled his chest, one that made him uncomfortable. What was it? Jealousy? He could not tell.
He looked at the door, before stepping away from it. He wanted to tell Mia but...he did not want to break his best friends heart. Drake noticed that Grayson was bothered and insisted that he tell her. The blonde refused.
"N-no... I... Maybe we can do something about this! Maybe...she can choose one of us!"
Drake tilted his head, weakly kicking at the wood beneath his feet. He growled. "I don't know, Grayson. It just doesn't sound right! It kinda sounds like we're objectifying her, don't you think!?"
The blonde insisted. "I know, but...don't you want to know...if she loves you back? We'll take it slowly and not holler out our feelings right away, and we won't force anything or get carried away with trying to get her to like us. Does that sound alright?"
Drake huffed, his arms crossing over his chest for a moment as he thought about it. "Fine.I suppose...but promise me that whoever she chooses, if she falls for one of us, that we will not have any ill will towards each other." He held out his hand and waited for Grayson to take it.
Grayson nodded and placed his palm against Drake's, his fingers wrapping around his hand. "As long as you promise me the same thing."
The hybrid smiled and moved his hand up and down. "Of course. I promise."
Both of the guys went back into the inn and approached the elf waiting at the table for them to return. Her wide lime green eyes twinkled as her bright white smile spread across her cheeks.
"That took you boys long enough! So what's going on?"
Drake replied, sitting down simultaneously as Grayson sat. "Nothing. Grayson just needed fresh air."
Grayson forced up a chuckle. "Yeah, but I'm fine now!
Grayson smiled, grabbing his mug and gulping the rest of it down. He slammed it back onto the table, breathing deeply. His arm rose up to wipe the water off of his lips and the dewdrops in his beard. It fell back down to his side, his first balling up. He looked up at Drake, trying to repress the truth of the conversation they had shared outside.
"Good! I was worried."
Drake chuckled, a fake one that he had forced up as to not give their strange behavior away. "Yeah..."
Time passed, with days turning into a week. Mia was sick again, because of the poison or natural causes, they didn't know but what they did know was that they needed to do whatever it took to make her well again. Drake stepped out of the tent that the elf rested in, her eyelids covering her lime eyes as she slept. A wet rag was placed over her head to keep her forehead from overheating.
He walked up Grayson, sitting down a few feet next to him in almost a circle formation. He sighed, both of them gazing into the fire that rain was most likely put out soon since dark clouds filled the sky and thunder rumbled in the distance.
The hybrid stated, "she should be fine. I gave her a health pointing so that should help."
Grayson let out a deep breath, turning to his friend. "Drake... I can't wait any longer with telling her the truth. I feel sick from balling up these emotions inside of me!"
"I know... We'll tell her when she gets up. How about that?" His skin began to sweat from the statement.
A few minutes went by, before Mia stepped out of the tent. She yawned and stretched her limbs, feeling a lot better than she had before. Her eyes opened, looking over at the boy's that sat by the fire. She caught their attention as she called out their names and ran to join them.
"Hey! You seem to be feeling better!" Drake's lips perked up at its corners.
The elf nodded, sitting and filling a gap between her companions. "Yeah! I feel much better now! Thank you guys!"
Her arms lifted up, taking their necks and pulling the two in for a hug, though it let them in positions that hurt their spines. Once they pulled back, Grayson scratched the back of his neck, blood rising in both males cheeks.
"M-Mia...uh..." He was hesitant but got himself to speak after a bit. ""Um...Drake and I... I'm gonna let it out... We like you!"
Mia's cheeks flushed and eyes grew. Her head turned to Drake as he spoke up. "Mia...Grayson and I both love you, as more than a friend or family...but...we didn't know how to say anything, especially since we both like you."
There was a moment of silence as Mia collected her thoughts. Her eyes began to tear up. "I-I...but I love you both too! I don't want to have to choose between one of you!" She pulled her legs up to her chest.
The boy's both gave each other silent glances. This did not feel right. The girl whose heart they wanted to fill was breaking because of them. They felt guilty and torn.
"Maybe...you don't have to. What if you can have us both? Does that sound good?"
Mia looked up, her legs crisscrossing again. "Both of you? Are you sure that you guys won't get jealous of each other?"
Drake's bright smile returned. "As long as you guys are both happy, then I'm fine with anything! I promise that we won't fight."
"Me too."
Mia smiled, wiping away her tears that filled her eyes but did not run down her cheeks. A laugh rose up within her and escaped passed her lips. "Thank you... Both of you get over here!"
The boy's both scooted closer to her, only for her arms to once again come up and take both of them to pull them closer. She pressed them both against herself, mumbling loving words and saying that she was grateful for them and for their decision to not fight over her. She was glad that she could love them both with her overflowing heart and not have to worry about conflict between the two men that she would give anything for.
"I love you guys." She turned her head, kissing the blonde against the lips, then turned to Drake. She had to stretch a bit to reach him but was able to press her lips against his.
Drake and Grayson both looked at each other, both smiling in joy. They were happy, she was happy. As long as everyone had their wish and no one was left with a broken heart or got hurt, then they were willing to do anything for her and each other.
