Chapter-3 Compromise

"Who is this?" I asked again moving closer to the door.

Calm down Mae, might be some wrong address. How can they find you when you haven't used your magic for so long?

"Elena it's me," Margo coughed from the other side of the door.

Wait, what is she doing here?

Without wasting any time, I opened the door.

"Oh my god, Margo what happened?" I took her in. Her whole face was bruised and she was shivering by the time I opened the door. Her soft lips were bleeding, her cheeks swollen, she is limping as she came in.

Taking her to the couch, I gave her a glass of water.

Who did this to you, Margo?

She took a sip and wiped her tears.

I hate to look at Margo like this, she's always the one to cheer us up and now she's in such a vulnerable position, I don't know what to do.

Slowly I took the blanket and wrapped it around her.

She gave me a soft smile, "thanks." But her voice came out all tired and it looked like she has no energy left in her body.

I kept my hands on her shoulders and started rubbing her arms hoping it makes her feel safe.

What else can I do?

I cannot use my magic to heal nor do I have a first aid kit to fix her wounds.

"My dad, he started hitting me for not getting his drink," she looked down in shame.

This was the first time I am hearing something like this from her. She always used to parade how amazing her parents are and this is unbelievable.

Margo still lives with her parents due to her economic conditions. Just like me, she cannot afford to move out on her own, she's already studying with student loans.

"It's the first time," she continued not waiting for my reply.

I know Margo, I know.

"He never raised his hands on me. I get that our situation is a bit ruff nowadays but that doesn't mean he gets to take out on me," she sniffled as tears flowed freely through her.

"Shh... It's okay Margo, sleep, we'll talk about it tomorrow," I took her into a soft hug.

Poor Margo, she doesn't deserve it.

Nodding she stood up, "where is the washroom?" I showed my hands towards the bathroom. She's been to my house only once when I begged her to come to see my painting. And the second time she comes, she comes like this.

Pain swelled through me at Margo's condition. The one person who's closest to my family is Margo and it hurts to see her hurt. I hope she gets well soon. I cannot look at her like this.

Within two steps Margo fell like a corpse making me panic.

"Margo?" I screamed going next to her.

What the hell happened with her?

Her body was getting cold and I could sense it, she's slowly going away. Her breathing is so slow, not like how normal humans breathe. I have to take her to a hospital before the situation gets worse.

Without waiting, I went to my neighbor's door and started banging. She has a car and she'll have to help us now. With all the free milk I've been giving her, I am sure she will help us.

"Go away," I heard a scream from inside.

"Please, I need your help," I shouted back. I don't even know her name. She always keeps herself secluded. I've only seen her when she takes a bottle of my milk with a scowl. She must be in her mid-thirties, I guess.

"What the hell do you want?" she screamed as she opened the door. I woke her up from her peaceful sleep, it's visible all over her face.

Her blonde hair was all messed up, she was wearing a loose tee and a legging.

"My best friend, she fainted, we need your help," I panted looking between my house and hers. We need to do something soon. I am trying so hard not to panic.

My mom always told me that being nervous and panicking will always force us to make dumb decisions and now isn't a time to make one.

"What am I supposed to do?" she growled. "Call the emergency," she shut the door.

Anger boiled through me at how selfish she is. Ungrateful woman. She's been taking my free milk and yet here she is, shutting the door at my face when I ask for help.

"Open you, women, for drinking my milk all this time, for once help me," I banged shouting.

God, I've never felt so out of control. It's like she's triggering me to use my magic on her.

Maybe it's because of the person in my home. I cannot afford to let anything happen to Margo.

"Fine," she opened the door. I let out a glare before actioning her to follow me. We took Margo and managed to put her in her car.

"Thank you," I mumbled as she started driving to the nearest hospital with a groan.

So much for helping.

We don't have any hospital near us, it takes a fifteen-minute drive to reach the nearest one.

A few minutes into the drive her car stopped. Not now.

What the hell is wrong now?

"Damn it, Ronan," she hit the steering wheel hard.

"What happened?" I looked at her with worry.

Times running out and I have to take Margo to the nearest hospital. Hold on Margo, we'll be there soon.

"I am sorry, my ex again stole the petrol, you are on your own," she shook her head and started walking back and forth. She was looking at the road for some car to give us a lift. But we aren't out of our area. No car will be passing through this way, definitely not at this time.

What am I supposed to do now?

On my side, there were few shops and there is a small shop which looked like a hospital but at the same time not.

'Let nature heal you,' the board read.

Margo is passing away every passing second. I cannot use my magic and this is my only hope. Closing my eyes, I went straight to the place in front of me.

"Excuse me," I said out loud knocking on the door.

"What is dear," a woman in her mid-forties came out, her face full of concern.

"My friend, she fainted and she needs help," I stuttered.

"Bring her in," she nodded.

I and my neighbor rushed through the place carrying Margo. The whole place looked like a healing place, just like the one back home.

Realization hit me. This is a witch's place. Only my kind uses herbs to heal.

Shit, what have I done?

I shouldn't be here but Margo needs help. Closing my eyes, I decided to take the risk of getting caught to save Margo.

"Lie her down," the woman spoke as she turned on the lights.

She then started working on Margo by checking her pulse and mixing some herbs. I observed the woman keenly looking for any suspicion. But she looked genuine. She was indeed trying to heal Margo.

"I am leaving," my neighbor nodded at me. I took the five-dollar note in my pocket and gave her.

"Thank you," she didn't hesitate to take that and leave. Ungrateful humans, I huffed.

"How is she?" I sat next to Margo.

"You brought her at the right time kid, don't worry," she gently patted my head and put some paste in Margo's tongue. The way she patted me was filled with warmth and affection.

No witch does that. It means only one thing, she doesn't know my identity.

"What happened to her?"

"Due to the beating, her lungs were damaged but don't worry, she'll heal in a week or two."

I nodded. Margo didn't deserve this. But I am glad that she is alright now.

"Thank you, when will she wake up?" I looked at Margo with worry.

"In six to ten hours," she kept working on Margo, mixing herbs and stuff.

"How much?" I mumbled. I am afraid she'll ask something I cannot give her. If it's a part of my life essence, then I don't mind but there's a huge possibility that she'll know my identity too.

She is a witch, an old one. She too like me is living in human territory. I could sense her magic. But I know she cannot.

I observed her place for clues of anything.

There was a huge stack of herbs and liquids, which I assume she is using for practice. I could see some familiar herbs that I know too. My mom was a specialist in healing too. She taught me a few basics.

She always said the beauty of nature is how it has given us everything to live, heal and enjoy our life. Yet we people take it for granted.

Every time I get hurt, she always used herbs to heal me instead of magic. According to my mom, we should use magic only when nothing else works. Magic is a power that shouldn't be taken for granted and used lavishly.

It's a gift we were blessed with and we should respect it.

Thinking about my mom only makes the ache stronger. I miss her. I hope they are happy and at peace.

"You look just like Elena," the woman chuckled making me freeze.
