Arlo
The next morning
The days started to get chillier as summer passed closer and closer to fall.
The family was out gathering fire wood so Roman could heat the fireplace when it got colder.
Destiny was sitting on the couch reading when Wynter and Wyatt came down stairs.
"Do you guys need help out there?" Destiny asked them. She felt like she was kinda being useless at the moment.
"No of course not sweetie. We've got plenty of people out there, you just relax" Wynter assured her.
Wyatt looked very unusually happy.
He raised his arms in some sort of victory as they walked towards the door.
"I can't wait for winter, I love controlling the snow. It makes snowball fights so interesting." He directed the last part to Destiny and winked which caused her to laugh as they headed outside.
When they walked out the door she looked back to her book to continue reading.
Suddenly she heard footsteps from upstairs.
That was strange. She thought everyone was outside helping.
She looked upstairs to the railing of the second floor, no one there.
Her eyes looked a little higher to the air controllers floor.
Destiny was shocked to see Arlo standing there watching her with a coffee cup in his hand.
"Oh hi Arlo" she called out to him.
He didn't say anything but instead just waved at her with a bored expression. Or maybe it was annoyed. Destiny could never tell what Arlo was feeling, he always looked annoyed at something.
"Umm I thought you were outside with the rest of them?" She told him questioningly.
"Nah, they don't want me out there. Roman apologizes and suddenly he's no longer the black sheep. Me disagreeing with the family about him suddenly makes me the bad guy though. So I can assure you they don't want me out there." He explained to her as he sipped his coffee.
"I'm sorry about that" she apologized although she didn't really feel very sorry for him.
He was constantly a dick to her and to Roman for no reason at all.
"Are you though?" He asked and raised an eyebrow at her.
She laughed slightly and shrugged.
Suddenly Arlo disappeared but not for long because she could start to see his body making it's way down the stairs as he walked to the living area.
"I don't need your apologies" he told her coldly as he sat on the couch across from the one she was sitting on.
Destiny looked down.
"Why don't you like me?" Sje suddenly asked.
He looked up at her with a cold expression on his face.
He didn't answer right away which gave her the knowledge that she wasn't completely wrong about him disliking her.
"You fell for Romans antics" he told her.
Suddenly Destiny sat forward.
"Why does that bother you? And it can't just be that because you hated me when you found out about me sleeping in Eric's room. And last night when you said 'shes human and that's all she'll ever be to me'" she told him.
Arlo laughed slightly.
"For a human you are pretty smart." He shook his head.
Destiny frowned.
"You're not wrong though. Its not just about you falling for Roman. Its about the fact that you are human. A human in a world that wasn't meant for humans." Arlo explained to her.
Destiny looked hurt and she was. He hated her for something she couldn't even control.
"I can't control the fact that I'm human. And it's not even my fault that I ended up here. I wasn't trying to I can assure you. One second I was in Michigan and then I'm here." She defended herself.
"I understand that. Its not JUST the fact that you're here. Its the fact that nobody seems to care. The fact that they all just welcomed you here like you're some lost fairy. They should be working on trying to get you back to your world not keeping you in ours" he told her.
Destiny could feel tears forming in her eyes.
"Why don't you want me here?" She asked him.
"You're a threat to my kind. Not only could you somehow escape and tell everyone about what you've seen here, but if others find out about you, they're gonna want you dead" Arlo explained to her in a calm voice.
"What? I thought you guys were the only of your kind?" She asked.
To that Arlo shook his head.
"No. Romans the only of his kind and Selenes the only of her kind, but there are more air controllers out there, more earth controllers and water controllers. There's not many of our kind left but there are some other than us. And trust me human, they hate your kind" He told her, his jaw clenched.
"But why? Why do they hate humans?" Destiny asked curiously and worriedly.
Arlo sighed.
"God you're a curious little shit aren't you?" He rolled his eyes.
"A really really long time ago. Like literally thousands of years ago, there was a human who 'stumbled' into our world. We thought he was innocent like my family thinks you are. He turned out to be anything but innocent." Arlo reminisced of the story he's heard for as long as he can remember.
"What happened?" Destiny urged him to continue on.
"One of the fire controllers, way back before Romans time, fell in love with this human man. They got really close, both emotionally and physically...she was extremely happy in their moment of bliss and she accidentally burned him. From that moment on he was terrified of her. He somehow managed to escape and told someone of what happened. Of course at first they most likely didn't believe him. Until he showed them the barrier between your world and ours." Arlo started to explain.
"Wait the same barrier that I passed through?" Destiny asked.
"Maybe, but most likely not, because I believe there's more than one." He told her.
Arlo continued "Anyways, He brought the person he told to this world, a d they were armed. Guns and explosives just in case he came to find out that this man wasn't just crazy. The armed guy was completely astonished at what he'd seen. Just like you were. But as soon as he saw what the people here were able to do he started shooting. He killed The woman who burned the man, as well as Lady Willows parents." Arlo explained further.
"Wait what?? Lady Willows parents were alive that long ago?" Destiny asked.
Arlo nodded. "Lady Willow is the oldest of us all. She's Thousands of years old. She's was only about 200 when this happened to her though. She used to tell us the story all the time when she brought us all in. She wanted to warn us about the humans, and yet she so easily trusts you for some reason" Arlo looked at her with a cold expression.
"That makes so much more sense" Destiny whispered.
"I bet it does, which is why I can't seem to understand why I'm the only one who doesn't like you considering we all heard the horror stories about your kind" Arlo clenched his jaw again.
He ended his explanations just like that and got up to walk back upstairs to his room.
So that's why he hated her so much? Destiny thought to herself.
She couldn't get his words out of her head though. She thought about them constantly for the rest of the day.
"We all heard The horror stories about your kind"
Then why were they all so nice to her? And so trusting? Destiny thought to herself.
This story made sense for why Arlo hated her but it made no sense for why all the others welcomed her so easily.
