𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝟲 || To Look For a Hat

Emery couldn't sleep at night.

She tossed and turned numerous times, but the fact that she lost her hat kept on replaying in her head at an alarming speed.

She heaved a sigh, and slowly climbed down from her bed, tiptoeing outside of the dormitory.

Before she left the dormitory, a a thought struck her mind.

She slowly crept onto her beside, and opened her drawer. Inside it, lay a single slip of parchment. She snatched it, and kept it in her hand, and then proceeded to leave the dormitory.

Once she reached the common room, she sat near the dying fire and read the words on the paper once more, furrowing her brows and looking for any sort of sign of recognition.

She read it once more, and even turned it upside down, but it still remained encrypted. Sighing, she folded it and put it in her pajama pocket, then yawned as she stared at the dying flames.

She tried to remember where she left her hat, but she could only remember not finding it on Wednesday morning.

That meant she had it all week, and lost it on Wednesday.

But where?

Although Emery didn't want to admit it, she had grown attached to the hat in just a matter of days. She loved how people complemented her when she wore it, and how she paused in front of the mirror while wearing it.

She loved the looks she got from everyone, and she felt important with the hat.

Until she lost it.

Emery couldn't believe how careless she'd been. Now she'd never get to go to muggle London. Even though her mother wouldn't find out if she was wearing the hat daily, Emery couldn't lie to her.

Her mother was the most precious thing on the planet, and Emery wouldn't dare lie to her. Or anyone else for the matter. You see, Emery was an honest child, and had never lied before, even when pranking.

If she did anything, or made a mistake, she would immediately own up, and that was her golden trait.

Her honesty.

And now, she would write to her mother to tell her she lost the hat.

So she did just that.

She sat by the fireplace, and wrote a letter, and gave it to her owl, Bernard, to send it to her mother.

Then she sighed, and relaxed on the blue velvet couch.

***

The next morning Emery woke up in the Ravenclaw common room, to the excited chattering of the first and second years.

It was already the weekend, and the first week of school had just whizzed by. Usually, Emery would spend the first weekend playing pranks, but today, she was in no mood at all.

She had only one thought on her mind; to find her hat.

She met Cecy on the stairs to the dormitory.

"I fell asleep in the common room," she explained.

Cecilia just shook her head. Emery and Cecilia walked to breakfast together, both wearing identical white summer dresses. Emery's long blonde hair was left down, and she looked like some sort of angel.

She was a devil in disguise.

And boy, did everyone know it.

She had jam tarts and a couple of bread rolls for breakfast, then went on her mission to find her hat.

She started in the dungeons, checking the potions room, Professor Slughorn's office, the store cupboard, and even the rest of the corridors and empty classrooms.

She never found it.

Next, she thrashed throughout the transfiguration department in hopes that she'd find it there. How very mistaken she was.

She searched and searched, and ignored everyone who called her name.

The only thing on her mind was her hat.

Three hours later, she still had no luck. A small frown on her face, she ran to the Black Lake, and sat by the willow tree, looking out at the afternoon sun as it reflected off the lake.

Her eyes fluttered close.

She was dreaming, dreaming of wildflower grasses and dandelions. She was wearing her white summer dress, and her hair was blowing in the flourishing wind. Her eyes were wide with excitement, and she was wearing her hat.

She walked through the tall grasses, and enjoyed the feeling of the radiant sunshine on her skin. She breathed in the smell of the sweet wild lavender, and hummed in melody with the chirping birds.

Then she saw a figure in the distance.

It was the man from the book.

Her father.

He was dressed in his Greek Quidditch team uniform, and he looked strange in it, seeing as Emery had never seen him play Quidditch, let alone own a broomstick.

She stood in the distance, staring at him.

The man ran towards Emery, a smile on his face, and Emery found herself smiling too.

Her arms open wide, she ran forwards to embrace him, her long, lost father.

At once, the sun disappeared, and dark monstrous clouds took its place, their shadow looming over everywhere.

Thunder echoed through the field, and all at once, all hail crashed down from the sky.

Emery was soaked, yet she kept on running to her father, not realizing that she was knee deep in water.

Her father ran towards her, and Emery did the same.

Just before their hands touched, a wicked gale of wind enveloped her father, the only thing sticking out was his hand. Huge waves burst out from the ground, flooding everywhere.

"EMERY!" cried her father.

"DAD!" Emery shrieked.

"Help me, Emery," he shouted.

"I'm coming dad, I'm coming," she whispered.

"IT'S GREEK!" yelled her father, before suddenly disappearing under the storm.

He was never seen again.

The clouds went away, the winds subsided. The storm was over, and all was calm. Emery's heart, however, was racing wildly.

Her eyes pined for her handsome father, but everywhere she looked, there was grass.

She walked for miles, finding nothing but grass, eventually reaching a cliff, that overlooked the sea.

She knew her father was lost somewhere there, and Emery was stuck all the way on the other side, with no way to get to him.

She was stranded.

"Dad..." Emery choked.

Emery woke up with a gasp, panting and gasping for breath. Her heart raced wildly, and she thought of nothing but her dream.

She couldn't remember all the details, except the fact that her father appeared in her dream.

Emery, overcome with stress and fright, found herself crying her eyes out by the Willow Tree near the Black lake, wishing for her father, and nothing more.
