CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE

"She's WHAT!?"

Leyona stared at crow. It was currently dawn, and Aya had come back a couple of hours ago, severely injured. When she asked about Kanao, the kakushi had hurried away, not speaking a word.

She feared the worst, and her mind kept on going back to one of the possibilities, but she never really touched on it until her crow confirmed.

Kanao was dead, killed by Upper Moon Three.

Leyona punched the wall beside the crow, causing it to squawk and flap away out of fear. She gritted her teeth, caring less about the crow and caring even less about her hand.

She had gotten the news while visiting Maaya.

Not really, she had actually just been sitting there and doing nothing while staring at the unconscious girl like a weirdo.

Then the crow arrived and flung her world upside down.

As if the guilt of Maaya's condition wasn't enough, Leyona now had to deal with this. The loss of a sister.

It was like that night in August all over again.

Leyona couldn't save her family.

She could've stopped Aya and saved Kanao.

The girl stopped as realization struck her mind.

It was Aya's fault. If she hadn't ran off, then maybe Kanao would still be alive. Maybe she'd be at home, Aoi would probably not be crying, and the triplets wouldn't be sobbing on the floor in the hallway.

Leyona could hear them crying outside the door.

Clenching her hands into fists, tears fell as Leyona crumpled to her knees, sobbing at the loss of another family member.

Kanao had been a older sister to her, no, a mother to her.

And Aya had had a hand in her death.

"Caw caw! Flower Hashira Kanao Tsuyuri has been killed in an encounter with Upper Moon Three! Caw!"

Casin and Michiko froze, before turning to each other and saying two different things at once.

"Her poor girls! They must feel terrible." That was from Casin.

"It seems we lost yet another Hashira." Michiko voiced that one.

Silence settled over the pair as they digested the news, before Casin spoke up again.

"Fly high, Kanao. I hope you find happiness in your next life." He said, bowing his head in respect. Michiko followed his suit, the two Hashira standing there in silence.

The Flame Hashira spoke again. "We should go check up on the girls." Casin glanced up in surprise, before nodding. "We should."

Aya clutched the left side of her face with a groan as she sat up, pain lashing through her entire body. With a yelp she flopped back down, sending another flare of pain. It seemed mainly in her back and face, and she briefly wondered how she had gotten those injuries.

She also couldn't see out of her left eye, and when she went to touch it, she discovered there was bandages covering it.

Odd, she didn't remember injuring herself....

"Caw! Kanao Tsuyuri, killed by Upper Moon Three Caw!"

The words hit her like a car. The memories, of her going after Shinobu, claws raking across her face, Kanao being there just as she fell unconscious......

Oh Kami. What have I done?

Aya thought, covering her face with her hands as her eyes watered and a flash of pain soared through her shoulders and sides again.

That was when the door came crashing open, a loud thud sounding as it hit the wall.

"Aya."

A simple word that sent shivers down her spine. The voice that held it was Leyona, for sure. But judging by her tone of voice, she was pissed, her voice filled with hatred and choked with tears.

Aya uncovered her face, looking at her friend. It still hurt when she moved them, but she'd endure it.

There was Leyona, tears welling in the corners of her eyes and her face contorted with rage and grief, ever aspect of her screaming 'pain'.

It just made Aya feel ten times more guilty.

The two thirteen year olds stared at each other, before Aya opened her mouth to say something. "Leyona....I-"

"Shut it."

Aya recoiled, as if slapped. It at least felt like she had anyways.

Leyona glared at her. "I don't know what to say to you right now." She spat, and Aya felt a flash of anger as she sat up. How dare Leyona speak to her like this? It wasn't even her fault.

It was Shinobu's.

"It wasn't my fault. It was-" The angry thirteen year old was interrupted once again by her friend.

"If you hadn't gone then Kanao would still be alive!" Leyona shouted, and then a heavy silence settled over them at her words.

Aya stared at her in disbelief, not wanting to believe her friend-no, Leyona-had said that.

"I'm going to go do my job. See you later." Leyona turned on her heel, and before Aya could even shout to stop her, she was at the door.

Then she paused, and for one fleeting second, under all the pain in her chest and face, and the anger and guilt of the situation, Aya thought she'd apologize and stay with her.

"Murderer."

And the slayer waa gone, leaving a slack jawed Aya.

Aoi had dropped breakfast and had also burned her hand on the stove when she heard what Kanao's crow had said.

Well, former crow.

This death hurt more then Cat's ever did. It was like Shinobu's death all over again.

She knew that Aya was partially to blame, after all the girl had gone after an insane revenge mission for no reason.

The woman didn't blame her at all though. It was, in fact, Upper Moon Three's fault.

Aoi refused to address her as Shinobu. Her master had died a long time ago, after being consumed by Douma.

...

Aoi had to get breakfast ready. She'd cry later.

She always cried later.

"Good job, Shinobu."

Shinobu stayed quiet under Muzan's gaze, not looking up out of respect and fear for her master.

"Although...." He leaned down a bit, extending a hand and lifting her chin to face him.

"Your memories are returning, aren't they?"

Shinobu stiffened. No. She couldn't lose them. The demon hardly knew them and yet she felt a strange protectiveness over them.

Muzan thinly smiled. "We'll have to fix that."

The demon woman's eyes widened as Muzan's nails turned into claws, and the blood was injected into her system. Falling to the ground, she clutched her head and screeched.

"After this is over, you will take Upper Moon Two's place. I've been lenient enough."

Shattered Legacy Secret

Leyona tends to have random outbursts of anger.
