CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE
Leyona knew it was her fault.
She watched the sun sink behind the trees, and couldn't help but worry. Kanao said she was going retrieve Aya, and then come back, but she hasn't yet. Apparently, Aya had left a hour or two after Maaya, Leyona and her had returned.
The best she could do now, was wait.
Leyona shoved that idea out her mind instantly. No. She wasn't one to wait, not at all. She was a demon slayer, meant to slay demons and avenge her parents.
...
Would her parents agree with this?
The idea made Leyona slump down a bit. Her father was a demon slayer, she had seen his blade several times, and once watched him doing the breath techniques. It was....stunning, the way lightning seemed to come off his blade.
Leyona closed her eyes, allowing herself to be lost in the memory.
"Dad!"
A eleven year old Leyona called out. She was skinnier, with less pronounced bags under her eyes and her hair longer than it was today.
"Dad! Mom says it's dinner time!" Even though they lived in Japan, Leyona used American terms when addressing her parents. The villagers thought it was weird, but in Leyona opinion they could go burn in hell.
A large clash of thunder made Leyona twist around, staring at the sky. It was blue, with clouds here and there, but even those were white and fluffy, not the dark grey of storm clouds. She frowned as another one sounded, and began to head towards it.
Leyona, despite not seeing like it, was a smart girl with a steady head on her shoulders.....sometimes. Most of the time she'd snap at people or, if they really pissed her off, punch them.
If it wasn't people, Leyona was smart enough to figure out what was wrong.
Peeking around her house, she stared in awe at her father, sword raised over his head, his blond hair that had tainted Leyona's a lighter hue than most, wild and loose and sticking to his neck. He took a breath in, said something, than bolted forward again.
Thunderclap and Flash.
That's what he said.
Afterwards, Leyona would always try to replicate it, and whenever her mom caught her she would just sigh and help Leyona with the form.
Leyona was never able to do though....
She had Kanao, as an older sister, along with Aoi, Sumi, Naho and Kiyo. They would protect her.
"Hey, Leyona?" The girl in mention turned towards the person who had disrupted her walk through memory lane. She was slightly annoyed, slightly relieved. If she stayed any long, Leyona wasn't sure she'd be able to come out again.
Sumi cleared her throat. "Aoi said that Maaya's good for visitors."
Aya, after what appeared to be an extreme test of her ninja skills, had gotten off the train. It had taken her a lot of effort to both avoid Kanao and not look like she avoiding Kanao.
She thought she had succeeded. Kanao wasn't following her, instead she was sitting on a bench, looking at the passengers getting off the train with a frown.
Aya slipped away in the crowd.
She adjusted her katana to a more comfortable position, then began running. She briefly considered stopping in to say hello to Veyrum and Aiden, but then remembered that Minty had died previously and so she didn't.
The wound was to fresh, and she didn't want to rub salt into it.
Eventually, after plenty of searching, she found the street where they had encountered the Upper Moons. Blood still stained the road, and Aya could almost hear the screams of Aiden and the clashing of swords from Maaya.
Shaking her head, Aya refocused herself on her mission. Killing Upper Moon Three.
She saw the way that Kanao had looked, the way she turned ghost white and tears where on the edge of her eyes. She didn't want that expression on Kanao's face, it hurt to much. It looked like it hurt her sister to much.
So, Aya would kill Shinobu and come back. The worst that could happen was that she got kicked out, but then Kanao might feel better, so it would be better.
She wouldn't die. Not today, not ever.
After all, Leyona was still there.
"I'll see you around then, Eotri!" Shinobu waved her away. Eotri nodded, before disappearing into the night. When she was sure her friend was gone, her smile dropped.
Something about Eotri's question struck something in her. A pounding headache took over, beginning at the base of her skull then suddenly blasting through it all. With a cry, Shinobu gripped her head as a memory appeared, in such vivid colour it seemed unreal.
She tossed money into the wind, laughing as some of it was blown away while the rest fell to the ground. A bald man leaned down to pick it up, shouting something.
A dull eyed girl, and a taller, long haired girl wearing a butterfly kimono.
The memory ended, with Shinobu collapsed on the ground, her hands over her ears, eyes shut. The pain dissipated after a while, and she opened on eye a crack.
No. No one must known about this. Shinobu didn't know who the girls where, and she didn't want to.
Yet....she wanted to see them again. There a strange burst of pride in her chest, along with grief. It was strange combination of feelings.
That was a name snaked into her mind.
Kanao.
Was that the taller one's name, or the child?
She wasn't sure. There was a sense of familiarity to the name, but why?
Shinobu had never met them in her life, and never would.
"You." A simple word made the demon look up, her eyes wide. She hadn't even noticed the presence.
Short dark brown, almost black hair, tied back with a green splotchy butterfly pin, in a style that Shinobu vaguely remembered. Her eyes where a darker shade of brown, once again, almost black. She held two maroon coloured scimitars, and was wearing a dark orange haori with a leaf pattern over a brown tinted demon slayer uniform.
It reminded her of fall colours.
"Shinobu Kocho. Is that you?"
Shinobu got up, facing the demon slayer. How did she know her name? Shinobu, maybe, but her last name?
She brushed it off. "Yes, that's me." Upper Three readied her blood demon art, in case the taller one attacked. The slayer gritted her teeth, and shifted her scimitars slightly.
"My name is Aya Suzuko. You will die by my blades."
Shattered Legacy Secret
Aya comes from a very high class family. We're talking very rich people.
Hahahahaha
Have a cliffhanger, at least until I update.
Also I didn't know until yesterday that one of the triplets names was Kiyo and not Kato so if you find a Kato please comment where it is so I can fix it.
