CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE
The demon and slayer charged at each other.
"Why did you leave me?! We were going to be happy! Get married, have children to call our own!" Toru shouted, dodging a blow from Casin's sword, and landed a blow of her own. Casin grunted, swiping towards her arm.
"Ice Breathing, Fifth form, Glittering Ice Shards!"
The air suddenly felt cold, like it would be in winter when Toru was human and she would go inside and sit by the fire with Casin, and sometimes Kita or Hanako would join in and then they would all be in one big pile of warm bodies, laughing and shouting at each other......
The demon shook her head. It was not the time to get lost in the past, as she was suddenly aware of the electric blue blade that sang past her head.
"How's Kita and Hanako doing? Are they alright?" Toru meant for that to come off as a jeer, and maybe she did resent them a bit for being the cause of Casin leaving her all alone on the porch three days after he proposed to her, but she missed them.
"They are....alright." Was Casin's only remark.
She missed Kita's protests and sharp remarks, and Hanako's shouting and tendency to curse ever sentence.
Toru missed before she knew about the slayers, when it was just her and her brother, Kai, and the two of them where trying to make a world for themselves off the streets after their parents left them....
And then Kai left as well.
Hanako and Kita left, and then so did Casin.
Why did everyone leave her? "Was I just not good enough for you?" Toru shouted, tears blazing from her eyes as she swung yet another punch. Casin squeezed his eyes shut and swiftly dodged. "Didn't you promise we where always going to be together?"
Casin had, he had promise that. On the first day of their relationship, he had promised that.
And then he broke that promise. To help Hanako and Kita chase their dreams of revenge on demons for what they did to their families.
He laughed dryly, swinging his sword again at Toru again, seeing the ring she had curled like a snake ready to strike. "You can't talk either, aren't you using our engagement ring as a weapon?"
Toru gritted her teeth, and lunged again, her attacks getting faster and faster. "Kai left me, my parent's left me as a sacrifice to save their sorry skins, Hanako left me, Kita left me, and finally you. You left me, left me all alone at night crying in a house with only a note!"
Casin's heart felt like it was getting shattered into pieces, over and over again at each word his former beloved said.
"But you know what's funny? The demons are the only ones who haven't left me! Yori, Shinobu, Eotri....they haven't left!" Toru laughed, it bordering on insanity now, and Casin raised his katana again. "They never left!"
The ring around her finger began to grow and swell in size, and Casin's jaw set.
"Oh Kami, Casin. I am so, so tired of being left behind."
Michiko's chest hurt with every breath she took. Leyona was still searching for her sword-muttering something about that stupid swordsmith could've made it not green and easier to find-and she instead listened.
Listened to fight, listened to how Toru shouted at Casin and his crimes, and how Casin apologized over and over again, the crashing of metal against metal.
Her eyes fluttered closed, and Michiko listened. Because that's all she was able to do, right?
Listen.
Listen while people got hurt, or worse. As her friends got hurt, and her bro-
No, she wouldn't think of them.
Michiko would not think of how she failed her brothers, even as a familiar name rang out.
"You were always good enough! I'm sorry, I'm sorry for everything!" Casin cried, wrenching his sword out of the metal's grasp. Toru made a sound that wasn't human, a low, rumbly growl. "You should have brought me along with you, Casin. Or stayed! Look what you did to me!"
"You did that to yourself! Deciding to become a demon, do you realize how heartbroken I was when I came back to our village and you where gone?"
The two stood for a moment, seeming to realize each other, Casin panting heavily and Toru merely glaring at him.
"Hanako and Kita wanted revenge. And I wanted to help them. I planned on visiting, but things kept on coming up. Missions, and other training..." Casin trailed off, and he saw Toru's eyes soften, just a bit.
And then he darted forward, quick as a snake, and Toru's head fell right off.
The black haired woman's eyes went wide, and her body collapsed into a kneeling position as her head thumped onto the grass, Casin slamming down after her, the sword falling onto the ground.
Tears came from her eyes as she was just barely able to see Casin from the corner of her eye, and as he shakily got up and hugged her body, tears staining the grass and mixing with the blood, his ice blue eyes soft and still loving, even after all she had done, and how, just audibly, she heard say something.
"I'll never leave you again. In the next life, or the life after that, I will find you."
And then what remained of Upper Moon Six vanished into dust.
Various people took the news better than others.
Eotri had paled and stared at the letter in hand, before turning and walking into her storage room and sobbing.
Yori blinked in surprise, before sorrow clouded his eyes and he shook his head, glancing behind him at the sun and wondering how much willpower it would take to walk into it.
Neito merely glanced away, muscles tense and looking downwards before walking away.
Shinobu looked angry, fists clenched and teeth gritted. She swore she would hunt down whatever slayer did this, and kill them herself.
Meanwhile, in the afterlife, a pretty woman with black hair and eyes so dark brown they were nearly black, merely looked at the friends, the lover, and the brother she left behind, and made sure to keep them safe until the end, and never leave them like they left her.
And a certain light brown-haired girl with a butterfly haori had some thinking to do.
Shattered Legacy Secret
Casin and Toru, whenever they had a child, where planning to name it Ikari if it was a boy, and Ura if it was a girl. Of course, they never had a child.
This chapter was just a whole lot of pain. I feel much remorse.
Did I do Toru's death justice? I think I did, at least, but I'm wrong a lot, sooooo
