CHAPTER SIXTEEN
It had been a year and a half since the festival, and now Aya and Leyona where heading off to Final Selection, Leyona dressed in a dark purple kimono with a leaf pattern on it, and Aya in sky blue one with black circles scattered across it. It was hard to look at it. Both worse black pants, and their kimonos where over black shirts.
A lot had happened during those months, from Aya accidentally setting fire to a house in the village and Leyona beating the absolute shit out of three people by herself, to them growing taller and more stronger. Their breaths had been completed, and they waited for Kanao to send them off.
"Isn't she running a bit late?" A now thirteen-year old Leyona said, feeling the hilt of a blade. It was a nice leather hilt, soft to touch and easy to grip. It was an actual blade now, practice swords couldn't do much to a demon. "Maybe she had to help Aoi with something?" Aya suggested, checking the uniform for pockets and holding a packet of rice balls.
"Are you trying to smuggle food into Final Selection?" Asked Leyona, staring at her friend as she finally found a pocket to put it into to.
"Yep."
"When did you even get that? I've been with you all day, and we haven't gone near the kitchen once-"
"Oh look there's Kanao!" Aya suddenly said, fulling interrupting a now annoyed Leyona as she pointed towards the woman who had been teaching them for the past two years. She hadn't changed a bit, still quiet and always smiling.
She was also holding a box. Pale blue and wide, she walked towards them. "Here you are. This is to show that you are apart of the butterfly siblings." No hello, or how are you, just these words.
Kanao opened the box, revealing various butterfly hair clips. Bright clashing colours of oranges, greens, blue, and basically every colour under the sun. Some were a solid colour, others had bright stripes and patterns on them.
The two girls stared at the clips, only broken by Leyona.
"So, uh, what are these for?" The thirteen year old asked, her eyes looking back up at Kanao. "These are for you. Everyone of my students gets one as they go to Final Selection. Please pick one."
Aya was the first to grab one, albeit with hesitation, picking a spring green one, the pattern on it splotchy, and lovely darker green.
Leyona choose a cyan once, light blue tiger-stripes tracing over it. After some assembly and mumbled curse words, the two had the clips in their hair, Aya pulling hers behind her head and tucking all her hair infront of it so that it would appear that her hair was shorter than it was, and Leyona pinning it to the back of her head and calling it a day.
(She tried a more complex hairstyle but nothing really felt right. Plus she didn't want to be bother putting her hair that way every morning.)
Naho, Sumi, and Kato came charging out of nowhere and practically smothered them. The three still acted like children despite being older than the two girls by several years. Finally Aoi came out, hugged them...
...and then waved the packet of rice balls in their faces. Aya paled while Leyona started to laugh. "Keep each other safe, alright? I want you back here by the end of the week. Both of you. In one piece." Was Aoi's final goodbye, before turning around and walking back into the estate. The triplets waved to them, then followed Aoi in a chorus of 'See you later!'
Now Kanao was left. The girl's stood under their trainer's gaze, shifting their feet. It felt like Kanao was judging them before going to Final Selection. "See you after a week?" Leyona tried, inching back a bit. Kanao seemed to snap out of whatever daze she was in, and nodded. "Please. Come back." Was all she said, before turning and walking back into the estate.
Silence fell over the two girls as they mulled over what just happened.
"We should get going. We don't want to be late." Aya said, breaking the silence as she turned around. Leyona followed in suit, her sandals cracking the gravel on the road.
"So I guess Aoi caught you?"
"Nah. I have more."
Leyona whipped her to head towards Aya, who lifted another packet of rice balls into the air. "What the fuck. What did you even-
"I sewed extra pockets into my kimono last night." Leyona could only stare at her friend as they continued down the road, guided by a crow. "I'm sorry.....last night?! Did you get any sleep at all?!"
Aya hesitated, before shrugging. "No idea. I think I slept though." Leyona opened her mouth as if to say something, then closed it and shook her head. "Let's just continue on."
They walked for about a day, not feeling tired at all, unlike the previous journey. They had Kanao to thank for that, she had pushed their stamina to its limits during training.
How long is this going to take us? Leyona thought, fiddling with the sword at her hip. The borrowed sword was not in the sheath her father had given her, she would put her actual sword in it after Final Selection. If they even lived that long anyways....
Maaya had came back fine. They weren't anymore skilled than her then when she had been to Final Selection, so they would be fine.
Hopefully.
"Hey Leyona, I think we're here." Leyona came back into focus, and stared at the scene in front of her. A massive mountain, covered in wisteria, even though they were out of season for a few more months. The only part that wasn't covered by the purple flower was the top of it, a mound of green and blacks.
"Wow." Was the only word that escaped her mouth as she stared at the amount of purple.
"This is going to be great for my allergies." Sighed Aya, and Leyona chuckled and nodded. "Oh, yeah. Forgot about those." With that, the two friends began their journey up it.
Hopefully they didn't die.
Shattered Legacy Secret
Aya is allergic to wisteria. Nothing to serious or life threatening, she just starts sneezing a lot. Leyona think it's hilarious.
Author's Note:
I'm considering making another story, and writing these two at the same time. It's an AU where a certain someone turns into a demon by Muzan Jackson. Not going to tell who. But should I? It isn't going to be linked to THSL at all.
